Popular Cuban TV presenter defects
MIAMI (Reuters) - One of Cuba's most popular television personalities, humorist Carlos Otero, defected to the United States with his family, Miami's Nuevo Herald newspaper reported on Tuesday.
Otero, 49, asked for political asylum on Monday at the U.S. border with Canada, where he was producing a television show in Toronto. He was travelling with his wife and two children.
His interview show on Sunday evenings was one of the most viewed in Communist Cuba.
"I hope to earn a living in exile and see my children grow up with the opportunity to study what they want, without having to agree with the system," Otero told the Nuevo Herald.
Otero said Cuba was "frozen in time" and Cubans lived in great uncertainty over their country's future since Cuban leader Fidel Castro fell ill and dropped from public view 16 months ago.
The humorist said he pre-taped his traditional New Year's Eve show before leaving for Toronto, but does not expect Cuba to air the program.
Cubans who defect to the United States, from Cuba's top baseball players to popular musicians, are considered traitors and no longer mentioned publicly.

PING
Not quite British news - but news nonetheless. ;)
“Dan Rather. Paging Dan Rather. A Network News Job has opened up. Dan Rather. Paging Dan Rather....”
But, the healthcare man, think of the healthcare!
LOL!!
Castro’s still dead ping.
They would, but America's fascist embargo has destroyed what would have been Cuba's otherwise vibrant Communist economy, making it harder for talking heads to enjoy the millions to which they are rightfully entitled.
Our TV anchors are already there in spirit.
“To keep the balance in the universe, will one of our TV anchors have to defect to Cuba now?”
Why only one? This guy has demonstrated he’s worth at least three of ours.
I volunteer the “Perky” one.
Send him back like Elian Gonzalez. /s
Is Michael Moore aware of this?
Post of the Day! Bravo!
What? He’s leaving that workers’ paradise to come to the racist, blood-thirsty, health-care deficient U.S.? The engine block must have finally fallen out of his ‘52 Hudson.
lol...I nominate Keith Olbermann. And Tom Brokaw. Okay, Katie Couric too. Still not balanced though...hmmm....
Sounds like he and his family will make great Americans. I’m guessing he’s not a DUer? This will not make Judi Lynn happy!
Uh oh. He'd better keep an eye on the '08 elections...
Well, it’s news of the Empire.
Hmmmm. Why would he do that, I thought Cuber was a, or not “a” but “THE” Tropical Paradise? I wonder if he is tired of the Cuban Free Healthcare?
bienvienidos, Senor. Welcome.
Hope you didn’t leave any relatives behind.
Good news indeed! Another loyal Cuban American!
Well, the good part is there will be someone to take over for Yakov Smirnoff in Miami. “In Cuba, Party always find YOU!”
Yet another luck one gets to taste the real sweet blessings of freedom. Good for him and his family.
Keith Olberman is already to go. His bags are packed and his speedo is stuffed!
LOL. Excellent post!
We could set up an anchor exchange program. Including a “Sister Network” program for each of our major socialist networks.
Each year, we could vote, and send one talking head from CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS to their Sister Communists. In exchange, one trapped freedom-seeking anchor from the Sister Network in the Communist nation, would be permitted to defect to the western country of their choice.
CNN perhaps could partner with Havana. CBS with Caracas - on the condition the entire staff of the recently shuttered, former market-leading opposition network RCTV, is flown to Miami!
ABC sometimes seems to try to climb over their self-imposed Iron Curtain, so maybe they should partner with Vietnam (also seeming to be trying to climb their own).
Finally NBC.
What say we just send them somewhere...
