YouTube: Josh Groban sings "O Holy Night" .... yes, hear the angel voices

O HOLY NIGHT by Josh Groban

Forget the shopping and how hectic it is at this time of the year. Remember why we rejoice and the reason for the season. Leave politics alone for about five minutes and enjoy this. Every year at Christmas Mass, this brings me to tears. This is glorious, even with crappy computer speakers.

My daughter graduated with Josh from the Los Angeles County HS for the Arts. It was a wonderful school. Josh was a great kid.

Very nice. Wish he didn’t use quite so much vibrato, makes him sound more like a singer from the 30’s or 40’s, but still quite delightful.

Wish there were more performers making beautiful music these days. Seems to be in rather short supply.

:)

Kristin Chenoweth did a really nice version in the otherwise forgettable film, “Deck the Halls.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be on YouTube.

I'm so disconnected with popular culture, I'd never heard of this guy until tonight. What a treat! What an utterly effortless performance. I've seen Beverly Sills, Sutherland, and Fischer-Dieskau live and close up. None had an instrument like this guy.

Classical purists (I would have counted myself as one until I heard him sing) will probably complain about some of his poppish inflections. Don't matter. Groban is the finest pure singer I have ever heard.

FWIW my Christmas fav's this year are:

1: "All I Get for Christmas is Blue" Over the Rhine

2. "Fatty Claus" Cledus T Judd

which I can't find on youTube for some reason, but it's a holiday traditional sing-a-long at the Barking Moonbat Bar where I hang. Here are some of the - edited - lyrics.

\ Here come Fatty with a sack of Shxx
Here come Fatty with a sack of Shxx
Here come Fatty with a sack of Shxx
And all those stinkin' reindeer.

Well I believe in Santy Claus
I believe that he's a prXXX
And though he comes but once a year
It's enough to make me sick
Him and his Christmas spirit
Are a lotta bunk
I'll have to bust my axx
for another year
To pay for all this junk

and so on with my favorite chorus something like:

Here' comes Fatty with his ho, ho, ho's
And there my money all go, go, go's
I'd like to punch him in his big, red nose
And make him wish he'd never come here

I don’t get the Josh Groban buzz. He must have rich parents with connected friends. He’s goofy looking and has average talent.

I just don’t get it.

It looks like he is going to give Andrea Bocelli the run for the money....just kidding.

I am so happy that we finally are getting fine replacements for the likes of Luciano!

"It looks like he is going to give Andrea Bocelli the run for the money"

Not going to. He already did.

I tried to buy tickets to a Bocelli concert - and they were only being sold to GOLD American Express Card holders. No other form of payment would be accepted.

I never cared for Bocelli or his music after that.

Bite your tongue, tin-ear. Pavarotti was an opera singer. One of the greatest opera singers in the history of recorded music. This kid sings pop. Not even close to being anywhere near the same league.

Great voice. What I like about it is it is completely lacking the shrillness most classically trained tenors have. I studied under a pretty good one in LA many years back. And while I greatly respected his craft and he taught me a lot, I really never liked his voice. But Bjorling's voice has balls, even on high G.

Well, you should have heard Anna tonight!

I've never figured out how someone can be a mezzo and a coloratura and everything in between all in the same package. And she is. And what a knockout.

With all that said, Groban has an unbelievable quality that I've never seen before. Holy Night is a really hard piece to sing well--wide range, esp if you do the high note at the end. It doesn't demand much flexibility but great endurance and range. It's hard work while you are singing. But he's just effortless. He's not doing any apparent abdominal support (and you see that in almost every good classical singer--that's why a lot of them press their hands together, makes it easier for some reason). Granted, he's in an overcoat. But you should see the physical effort of support and you don't. Another thing, his voice quality really doesn't change from chest to head voice.

Yes, that vibrato, what was he thinking! It was so distracting and made it where you couldn’t even pay attention to the song, the music, the words or the message.
If he were to sing that way on American Idol, Simon would have him yanked off the stage and would apologize to the viewers for this kid using too much vibrato!! I think he should be forced to go to voice class until he retrains himself not to use soooo much vibrato ........................... NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess this is a clear case of no matter how unbelievably great you perform, you cannot please everyone.

That is what I can’t stand is the register change from head to chest. It is so difficult to avoid. It is largely the reason I stopped singing.

Josh was trained by David Foster. As a sophomore at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, he wore glasses and sort of looked like a nerdy engineering student (but without adhesive tape holding his glasses together). He starred in the school plays, got contact lenses, and by the time he was a senior, we all had a feeling that he would be doing something very special.
