MR BEAN SIGNS AWAY OUR FREEDOM

MR BEAN SIGNS AWAY OUR FREEDOM

GRINNING Gordon Brown sold Britain out to Europe last night by agreeing to a massive expansion of Brussels power.

Despite having promised the British people a referendum, the Prime Minister put his signature to a new EU treaty without seeking the consent of the public.

After dodging a set-piece signing ceremony for the so-called European Reform Treaty, he flew to Lisbon to add his name to the document after other European leaders had left, making sure he did not feature in the official EU “family photo” of the event.

Last night his actions ignited a chorus of condemnation, with critics saying his Mr Bean-style sideshow was a humiliation for Britain, while his dumping of the referendum promise was a cynical betrayal. The new treaty removes Britain’s right to control its destiny in dozens of policy areas and gives Brussels the right to continue pressing the European courts to award it power over matters left in the hands of national parliaments.

Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said Mr Brown had left Britain in the worst of all possible worlds.

“With a stroke of a pen he has signed away a swathe of powers to the EU, but his sulky rudeness to our European partners means that he has actually managed to lose influence in Brussels. This latest blunder is another sign that Gordon Brown is struggling to cope as Prime Minister.”

The EU constitution on which Labour had promised a referendum was thrown out by French and Dutch voters in public votes in 2005.

Mr Hague went on: “The question he will now face, day in day out, is what democratic right he has to agree to the renamed EU constitution without letting the British people have their say.

“Labour’s election manifesto said there would be a referendum on the constitution.

“It didn’t say that if other countries threw it out first the treaty would be given a few tweaks and a new name and rammed through. But that is exactly what Mr Brown is trying to do.”

Under the treaty, Brussels will be able to interfere in UK policy on anything from immigration to the length of the working week.

It also emerged yesterday that the treaty will give thousands of illegal migrants new rights to overturn decisions taken by the UK’s Immigration and Asylum Tribunal – handing the final say on whether they can stay in Britain to unaccountable EU judges.

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage said he spoke to Foreign Secretary David Miliband in Lisbon and asked him for a referendum just moments before he became the first British minister to sign the treaty. But Mr Miliband responded with “a hollow laugh”.

Mr Farage said: “This is just about the most thoroughly dishonest political process I have ever been witness to.

“This is a constitutional treaty with profound, far-reaching implications and for the British Government to pretend it is something it isn’t and deny us a referendum is monstrous.” Mr Farage was also scathing about Mr Brown’s failure to attend the formal signing ceremony.

“Whether you are pro- or anti-European, the British performance in there was cringe-makingly awful.

“Our Prime Minister wasn’t there at all, and in the group photo afterwards our Foreign Secretary stood on the end on his own, sending out the message that we didn’t want to be here.”

Aides of Mr Brown insisted he was delighted to sign the treaty. “He’s very pleased to be able to sign. It’s something he negotiated and believes to be a good treaty,” said a spokesman.

Before flying to Lisbon, Mr Brown tried to laugh off his perceived snub to other EU leaders as he arrived at the Commons Liaison Committee yesterday morning.

“I think you can see the priority I attach to attending this committee,” he told MPs.

The formal signing of the treaty took place at noon. Mr Brown finally arrived shortly after 3pm. The document was brought to him to sign on his own in front of a Portuguese TV camera as he sat on an immense gilded chair.

Liberal Democrat leadership contender Chris Huhne, a former Euro MP, said: “Gordon Brown’s no-show in Lisbon will please no one at home, while raising some serious questions about his good faith among our partners.

“This is inept and peevish behaviour.”

Tony Blair supposedly secured the UK a range of opt-outs known as “red lines” on issues like home affairs and social policy before leaving office. But the treaty imposes a duty on member states to put their own national interests behind those of the EU.

It also has “self-amending” powers, which mean further power grabs by Brussels need not be referred back to member states’ parliaments. Critics say this feature means the red lines are worthless.

Is there nothing then? What of the Kingdom aspect? Is there a technical power in the throne to overthrow this travesty?

Have to agree with the newspaper’s take on this story, but I don’t like the headline. The problem is that the real Mr. Bean, Rowan Atkinson, is actually fairly sensible about politics. It’s unfortunate that his comic character should be associated with Gordon Brown.

Well, that’s it folks our time is up and through lack of action we ended up with the government we deserved.

We’ve nobody here to blame but ourselves unfortunately, yes Britain as a whole is to blame for this blundering clumsy EU monster that will encroach and strangle our lives in the days to come.

As I’ve already said before we (as a collective nation) have given Nu Labour three election victories two of them for terrible performance, so no wonder they feel so smug about signing our country away to a bunch of faceless, sour, uncaring, unelected numptys who are answerable to no one.

Sounds familiar.

Looks like our US politicians will do the same thing with this North American Union.

Its a travesty that independent soverign nations are forced to secede power to regional or global entities....esp when those entities do not allow real representation.

Politicians who sell out to these regional and globalist unions are committing treason

I had the good fortune of making several trips to Europe, and England was always my favorite. What a shame to see it signing away its sovereignty on such key issues as immigration. What exactly does England gain from this? I can understand free trade agreements and common standards, but the EU goes too far. Just like our federalism, what’s wrong with giving people the right to make decisions at the lowest possible levels? Yet, many folks just can’t seem to resist the urge to create ever increasing bureaucracies. Like some bureaucrat in Brussels is better at making decisions for England than the English. Frankly, it boggles my mind.

So they steal what they could not buy.

The Eurocrats are soooo mad that the little people told them to go to hell.

So they just said, "we'll do what we want anyway".

What's next, Muslim police to keep the errant Europeans in line?

Oh wait. Already have that. Sorry.

If I lived anywhere in Europe, where this EU mess prevails, I’m afraid I’d just have to start a civil war. I don’t understand how Europeans deal with their governments selling them out to such an extent. They don’t really even need individual governments anymore.

Yet here we are, but an half a step behind them, blissfully allowing our own version of the same. It is troubling that we see no comparison.

The puppet masters are VERY used to getting their way.

Mr Brown is no different than any other stooge of theirs.

Shrillery is just a lot more eager and in sympathy with the puppet masters’ tyrannical globalist goals.

Rudy is not far behind.

Probably Romny and Huckabee are not THAT far behind. I haven’t examined Romny that closely yet. Huckabee has some disturbing stuff in his background.

Even Fred is CFR. Though he seems to have a lot of other redeeming social qualities. One wonders if he cares enough to really bother with doing what it takes to win.

I hope Dunkan Hunter is reasonably clean.

McCain is a dyed-in-the-wool globalist. His family has been in bed with them for a long time, imho.

One of the concerning things about Romney is the reports (lilkely true) that the LDS institution has massive chunks of the . . . elites . . . investments . . . in their globalists’ operations. I don’t recall what the percentage is supposed to be, if I’ve seen that figure. But it’s evidently a very sizeable chunk. It may be bigger than most other single institutions.

Whether it rivals the Vatican . . . as some assert . . . would be an interesting question. I would still prefer to think of both institutions as independent of such macinations . . . but maybe it’s becoming time to lay that bit of naivete aside.

Only a thief and a coward sneaks off at night, mr brown has proven himself to be both!

Whew... you had me worried there for a minute. From the headline I thought that our beloved Mr Bean, Rowan Atkinson, was somehow involved in the mess. A black cloud was about to hung over all those lovely evenings our family watched together and rolled with laughter at the set of Mr Bean videos our oldest son brought home.

Glad to know he’s not involved... but a mess it is, all the same. I took a trip to the UK this past summer (actually 3 weeks in Ireland, Scotland and then London area). Truly one of the best experiences of my life, I enjoyed every minute of it, the scenery, the history and especially the people. I plan to go again soon, before it becomes too dangerous to travel there.

The bias in this report is so overwhelming, I don’t know what the actual facts are.
Obviously, if what is alleged is true, then this was an underhanded and incredibly dumb move.

Excuse me? You don’t think that after 50 years of open borders policy the U.S. gov’t hasn’t sold it’s “born in the U.S.A.” out? Let’s think about that for a minute. I believe we could impute a monetary value to “citizenship”. As a nation state relinquishes soveriegnty, the monetary value of “citizenship” dwindles. Now it might be said that the monetary value of British citizenship has dwindled practically to the vanishing point. And the value of U.S. citizenship dwindles each day as more illegals pour across the borders.

All of that being the case, what is the remedy? Frankly, I think the remedy, at least in the U.S. is a class action lawsuit demanding compensation for the loss of value of citizenship suffered by those born in the U.S. from 1948 forward. And I’ll take my settlement in .99 Silver Coins or Maple Leaf Gold Coins, thank you very much!

You can’t impose a constitution by stealth. Sooner or later this thing is going to fall apart. The question is when and how?

In the parliamentary system cannot the people force a no confidence vote? Can't the PM be pulled and a new government formed?

Can someone tell me where the Queen stands on all this - she cannot overturn the government's action but I can't imagine that the royals think it a good idea.

And, to post number 23 and US citizenship - FOX today is reporting that Arizona intends to issue 'non citizen' birth certificates, or none at all, to parents who cannot prove US citizenship. Cal and at least one other state considering the same.

Finally, the headline picked the wrong character - this was pure Black adder.

Speaking of Gold coins, between 1999 and 2002 Chancellor Brown sold off 395 tonnes of Britain’s gold reserves at rock-bottom prices and only made £1.88 billion ($3.48 billion). He sold the whole lot off at an average of about $265 per ounce.

I don't think the winner in 08 will grant amnesty.

I believe it will be a gift to them from dubya, in one final mass pardon through presisential order. President Bush may yet "see us at the signing", on inauguaration day '08.
