“Social conservative” sometimes is used as polite shorthand for Southern Baptist or Evangelical, or what the left disparagingly refers to as extreme right wing fundamentalists.
But that’s not really accurate. A substantial majority of Evangelicals are now voting Republican because of social issues like religion, marriage, family, and abortion. But I think it’s fair to say that maybe a quarter or a third of such people are still fairly liberal in their politics. They still vote Democrat, as their southern forebears did for a hundred years.
Also, “social conservative” includes many Catholics. Tradition-minded lay Catholics were actually first out of the blocks on the abortion issue, and it took the Evangelicals a number of years to see the picture and catch up with them. (Many of the Catholic bishops are still trying to figure it out.) Catholic voters are now divided about 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats, after having once been about 95% Democrat, mainly because of the social issues and because they came from formerly despisted groups like Irish, Italians, and Poles.
Huckabee ain’t no social conservative. He ain’t gonna appeal to most Catholic social conservatives, and he ain’t gonna appeal to real social conservatives among the Baptists and other Evangelicals, once they take a closer look at him.
The only danger is that they may not look fast enough. They hear his words and they take them at face value at first. But I think the word is getting out, hopefully in time to dash his hopes in the primaries.
There is a Huckabilly in my office who will not be reasoned with. He says Fred is a Hollywood McCain who doesn’t really want win. Thinks Rudy is a baby killing mobster and won’t vote for Mitt because he wears “magic underwear.” We’re about to find out how many Jesus iz my logic types we have in the GOP.
Even been to Hope?
I think that Huckabee is a Jimmy Carter redux. His position on illegal immigration by itself is very alrming to me.
Well there both from Hope, Arkansas and went to the same schools growing up.
Hmmm...Maybe you are on to something? Maybe Huckabee is the ‘Rat version of a “Sleeper Cell”.
I didn’t even have to reason with her. She told me she liked Huck, I started to prepare to talk to her, and then she said - but if he’s going to parole rapists, he’s NOT for me.
I think she’s supporting Mitt now. She must not care about the “magic underwear”.
Here’s the interesting part - she’s very religious (Catholic) and VERY conservative. My boss is a moderate conservative. Neither likes Rudy at all.
Check out what Fred is sending Iowans in the mail:

“Noun-One who uses aggressive, showy, and sometimes devious methods to promote or sell a product.”
Yup that fits it!
Is this empty suit to be foisted upon conservative voters as was Viagara King, Robert Dole?
We must beware of southern governors and twitish senators like Dole.

I believe that Giuliani, Romney, or Thompson any of the three could win. I don’t see how Huckabee could.
No, I am a Baptist and I am praying
“Please God, don’t let Huckabee get the nod!!”
Oo the other hand, one who speaks so plainly might break the Clinton spell http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4435264604183708659&q=Why+clinton+wins+in+2008&total=28&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0
“who ever thought that the term “arkancide” would or could develop a new meaning?”
As in the suicide of the Republican Party!
You have identified his most vulnerable issue. His spending record in Arkansas is no worse than the reversals of Romney as Governor.
