Pregnant Roswell Student Deported (Cry me a river alert!)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | December 13, 2007 | Rene Romo

Posted on 12/15/2007 1:32:00 PM PST by CedarDave

A Roswell school resource officer has been barred from local campuses after he pulled a pregnant 18-year-old high school senior out of class and referred her to immigration authorities for deportation to Mexico.

The student was determined to be an illegal immigrant, and Roswell Police Chief John Balderston defended the officer's actions.

But the police chief said Roswell Independent School District Superintendent Michael Gottlieb requested the officer's removal from schools "because he (Gottlieb) didn't want the officer checking on the immigration status of the students."

The student's removal from the school Dec. 5 has prompted an outcry from Hispanic residents in a city where more than half of the roughly 9,000 public school students are Hispanic.

~~snip~~

Dozens of Roswell residents met with Balderston and Gottlieb last week to voice their concerns and met again Monday with Gottlieb.

Under Roswell's school district policy, school officials do not try to ascertain the legal status of students, school board member George Peterson said Wednesday.

"The police officer who did that, he did not have our permission to do that," Peterson said, referring to the referral of the high school senior to federal agents. "He did that on his own."

... Roswell High School senior Karina Acosta [was stopped] at the school for a parking violation in late November and was not carrying a driver's license...

Acosta told the officer she could produce the driver's license and he allowed her several days to do so, Balderston said...

When Acosta did not produce a driver's license, the officer had Acosta pulled from class. In the course of trying to confirm Acosta's identity, the officer learned the student was an illegal immigrant and subsequently contacted immigration authorities, Balderston said.

It appears that illegals are of two minds, if recent polls are an indication. A lot of them live in fear of deportation, more so these days with increased attention on the problem, and try their best to avoid any infraction of rules/laws that would draw attention to themselves and subject them to deportation. Of course, this first group has gotten some solace now that they can legally get a driver’s license with no questions asked thanks to Richardson. Why she didn’t have one is anyone’s guess.

The second group may have already committed a felony (drugs, robbery, rape, etc.) and now feel they have nothing to lose by continuing to live a life of crime as they will be deported either now or after doing the time.

Both kinds; but I think those who do the probe thing directly are far more honest.

I’m not following the logic. Let me state first, I am NOT a fan of the NEA. However, TX schools have similar policies and they are NOT a union state. I did not belong to the NEA when I taught there.
It IS an issue of money, however. The school districts get paid per student, so they have no incentive not to take in every one they can. In addition, they get MORE money for any student who needs special services. So, illegal alien children are at least a twofer, if not a more than twofer.
It would be interesting to see how keen they were to educate them if they were actually docked money for every day an illegal student took up classroom space....

What difference does it make? It’s a waste of effort. She’ll be back before her little anchor-baby is born.

Well .. maybe you didn’t have to belong to the NEA .. but their policies govern most school districts. They are the ones who give millions of union dollars to democrats who get all these crazy rules we have to follow with our children in their schools.

Don’t get me wrong .. there are a lot of good teachers .. but the NEA is close to being a criminal organization - the way they take money from the hardworking teachers and then give it to democrats in order to buy the legislation they want - such as the homosexual agenda in our schools.

Looks like they will try to bring suit against the officer for doing his job.

Let them try. Hopefully Roswell officers will clamp down and no longer give these illegals any benefit of the doubt.

This cop let her off of her parking violation then let her have a few days to produce a license. When she couldn't he took action.

The hell with all of them. They want it all given to them on a platter and plenty of us are sick of it!

Oh they are evil incarnate, a bunch of power mad folks who could care less about education. Typical union tripe.
However, I think the system would be what it is regardless. On the other hand I could be wrong....I did go to public schools! ;)

This would have worked10 years ago. Giving people guilt complexes to make them "think twice" and retreat on enforcement.

What the ABQ Journal does not realize is that nowadays, nobody will give two farts over their tear jerking, activist articles they are sending out as part of a campaign to forestall the Big Hammer that is coming down.

People have just had enough of it. And in HUGE numbers across the land.

The dinosaur press will be the last to wake up on this score.

Was she driving without a license? Schools don’t require proof, including insurance?

“Every nickel of Federal and state $$$ that this school gets should be withdrawn.”

In reality, that school gets significantly more $$$$ per student exactly because such a high percentage of them require special ed (ESL at a minimum) which keeps the school staff fat and happy.

Roswell High School senior Karina Acosta [was stopped] at the school for a parking violation in late November and was not carrying a driver's license...

So this school teaches people to drive without a license and supports them doing so. If the knowing encourage such behavior are they not liable if one of these illegals runs over someone?

Dimwitted girl gets sent to Mexico where she belonged, no problem.

That's what I was thinking too.
