That and restricting globalism, social conservatism without the pro business bias.
Consider that a candidate who is against abortions on demand who will also offer to diminish outsourcing will sound very attractive to the “forgotten middle class” in middle America.
INOW, that “60% of republicans are no longer in favor of free trade” is coming home to roost in public opinion polls. A natural part of the political cycle BTW.
As a political philosophy, populism is a way of pandering to the masses.
Populism is a way to appeal to losers -- ones who have given up, convinced they can't make it without a government mandate. And, at the same time, wanting to punish those who have.
Over the course of American history, Populism has been a political whore.
