CANADA'S THOUGHT POLICE (Mark Steyn Charged With "Hate Speech")
NY Post ^ | 12/16/2007

Posted on 12/16/2007 1:01:35 PM PST by lowbridge

Celebrated author Mark Steyn has been summoned to appear before two Canadian judicial panels on charges linked to his book “America Alone."

The book, a No. 1 bestseller in Canada, argues that Western nations are succumbing to an Islamist imperialist threat. The fact that charges based on it are proceeding apace proves his point.

-snip

Two separate panels, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal and the Canadian Human Rights Commission, have agreed to hear the case. These bodies are empowered to hear and rule on cases of purported “hate speech."

demanded that the magazine be punished for spreading “hatred and contempt" for Muslims.

Spreading hatred and contempt is probably a koranic copyright violation.

It appears Canada has totally surrendered to militant multiculturalism. Any links Canada had to the Anglo Saxon traditions of freedom are dead. Sorry Canadian freepers.

“””CANADIANS FIGHTS MUSLIM DEPRESSION

There is a new bylaw in Vancouver that will ban smoking on most sidewalks in commercial areas, in bus shelters, and restaurant patios.

Great. They could have just stopped there. But no. City council members felt compelled to grant an exception for hookah lounges because “they provide an important cultural space ... for Muslims.”

The hookah lounges are said to be “essential” for Muslim immigrants because it helps them cope with depression, which they often experience as newcomers. This article from The Vancouver Sun goes on to point out that “Unlike other immigrants, they can’t go to bars because their religion prohibits them from drinking alcohol.”

Now isn’t that a crying shame. Muslims can kill infidels, but they can’t lift a toast to their hairy thunderer in celebration.
The debate doesn’t end there. The city council is still debating on is whether or not the bylaw should apply to crack cocaine and crystal-meth smoking, not just tobacco. Oh come on now, let’s not go overboard with this thing.

Further along in the article, you'll find ...

Nor should Americans dismiss this campaign against Steyn and Maclean's as merely another Canadian eccentricity. Speech cops in America, too, are forever attempting similar efforts - most visibly, on college campuses.

In fact, New York City itself has a human-rights panel that tries to stamp out anything deemed too politically incorrect.

It seems we are NOT as immune to this as we might have thought we were.

I've been looking for a better way to express my hatred and contempt for muslims and islam in general

Mr. Steyn lives in rural New Hampshire with his (only) wife and three children.

LF You were born in Toronto, but live in the U.S. Are you still a Canadian citizen?

MS I’m a citizen of Canada, never been anything else. I don’t believe in dual citizenship.

LF So if you ever require rescuing by the Canadian government, you’ll deserve it?

MS I can assure you that if I’m ever calling the Canadian consulate in some godforsaken hell demanding that HMCS Toronto come and get me, it won’t be because I’ve called five other embassies in the previous 20 minutes.

Indeed, this whole process of dragging Steyn and the magazine before two separate human-rights bodies for the “crime" of expressing an opinion is a good illustration of precisely what he was talking about.

Precisely. "There is no repression and if you say that there is we'll silence you."

The President ought to make Steyn an ambassador-without-portfolio so he can travel in Canada with diplomatic immunity if they get their maple leaves atwitter.

I think it's brewing, K.

I've had perfect strangers talk to me about these 'situations', lately. That's a good sign.

I hope we are not too late.

We must liberate Canada!!

We must liberate England!!!

So they can at least be as free as the Chinese and N. Koreans.

Precisely "There is no repression and if you say that there is we'll silence you"

There may be an even worse effect to free speech (what there is of it). It is fairly well known of the Human Rights Inquisition- oops Human Rights Commission, that they have a tactic. That tactic is to bring a charge against one of their targets. They know the magistrate, having some sense of the vile petty spite of it all, might find against the Commission. They then withdraw the charges.

The unfortunate person, often an easy target and not financially able, has then had to previously engage a lawyer. They then worry as to what might happen. The withdrawal of charges leaves them drained. Maybe this shuts them up for good.

The stories of the religious inquisition(circa 16th century) usually skip over that institution's original tactic. They used to show a person the instruments of torture. They would absolutely terrify that person. Then they would couch their demand in quiet terms- recant and you will go free. Having won out in these cases they absolutely crushed dissent. Most times the accused did recant.

To make my point. Even if they lose in court- or withdraw, should Steyn be contrite. The effect will be to even clamp down further. That way, it is a win-win situation. I have Mark Steyn's book. Perhaps the blighters will go after the book suppliers in Canada.

Here’s a thought...tell them to pound sand. It’s a book. If you don’t want to read it, don’t buy it; don’t check it out at the library. You can find lots of book reviews online. Check them out. If you don’t think the book is for you, then leave it alone. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to read it. And, that’s something we may not be able to say about every book...say...the Koran?

It’s not the book they’ve gone after, it’s the magazine for publishing an excerpt. I’d say their goal is to “discourage” publications from printing anything by Mark Steyn.

Of course, the magazine should not be on the hook, either, IMO.
