At least I was right in the fact that the original language left it open and needed to be addressed.

Well, not quite. Before the 12th Amendment, the VP was just the guy who ran for president and finished second. So before the 12th amendment, you couldn't become vice president unless you could run for president.

Sure you can. You can always run for a seat without meeting the qualifications . . . as long as no one sues to have you removed from the ballot.
