ORONO - The fight isn’t over for an Orono man who is upset about the actions of a student in his grandson’s class.
Paul Melanson addressed the school committee Tuesday regarding his frustration over a male student in his grandson’s fifth-grade class at Asa Adams Elementary School who was being allowed to use the girls restroom because he allegedly wants to change genders.
Melanson is the guardian for his grandson and is upset over the situation, but said at least the committee recognized Tuesday that the situation had occurred rather than denying it as school officials previously had done.
"At this kid’s request, he’s being treated like a little girl," Melanson said when addressing the committee.
Committee Chairman Robert Swindlehurst limited Melanson’s comments to about three minutes in order to protect the identity of the student.
During his presentation to the panel, Melanson said that in October, he called Superintendent Kelly Clenchy, concerned with what his grandson had told him about the other student. Clenchy denied the situation was happening, Melanson said.
Melanson then gave his grandson permission to follow the boy into the girls restroom and use the facilities. He did so on Oct. 4 and was taken to the principal’s office.
Melanson was called and told that if his grandson continued with his behavior, "he would be having a bad year," Melanson said.
Orono police later visited the grandfather’s house and Melanson said they told him not to use his grandson as a pawn in his fight.
"The Orono School Department is complying with all laws," Swindlehurst said. He added that "the situation is not occurring at this time."
But when Melanson asked which restroom the student now was using, Swindlehurst said he wouldn’t discuss the matter.
The individual is using the appropriate bathroom," Swindlehurst said. He then thanked Melanson for his comments.
"My attorney will follow up," Melanson said before leaving the podium.
After the meeting, Melanson said his grandson told him the student now is using a restroom designated for teachers. Melanson said his next step would be to give his grandson permission to use that restroom, even if it means the child might be expelled.
He said that the same anti-discrimination laws that are likely to be used to justify the other boy’s use of certain restrooms also could be used to justify his grandson’s use of the same restroom.
"I’m going to keep fighting it," Melanson said. "It’s going to continue. I want the law straightened out."
Melanson is supported in his fight by the Maine Christian Civic League, which has published two stories on the issue on its Web site, www.cclmaine.org, and by the league’s attorney, Steve Whiting of Portland.
League Executive Director Michael Heath was unable to attend the meeting, but another representative from the organization brought to the meeting Heath’s written comments supporting Melanson.
"Support for the privacy of the student and family is leading public officials, including the police, to make some profound errors," Heath said in the letter. "The reign of tyrannical political correctness is making us mad."
As to the overall situation, it's hard to know where to *start* to comment.

That was the comment that stood out for me. Sounds like Mafia goons are running the administration. "Oh, you can say what you like, it just sure would be a shame if you got your leg broke..."
They are leading him down a very dark path and ruining his chance for anything like a normal life.
I'd kindly remind anyone that said that to me that if another threat like that is forthcoming, his family is going to be having a bad year.

I love how the liberals in charge of reporting this story completely misrepresent the Grandfather in their caption under his picture:

1 - The kid is not “transgender”. He’s confused, and most likely being subjected to some sort of abuse in order to make him think that he is a girl. The article refers to him as “alleged”, but the caption doesn’t.
2 - He’s not upset about the student, he’s upset that the student is being allowed to use the girl’s bathroom. He’s upset that the school system is encouraging perversion, and allowing a boy to behave as if he’s a girl. And he’s upset about the double-standard being applied, where “anti-discrimination” policies are being unevenly used.
Love how they twist it (as well as use a terrible picture of the grandfather) to apparently suit their own “He’s a homophobe!” agenda.

Maine is no longer the state I grew up in. The natives (like me) are leaving in droves and being replaced by libs from Mass, CT, and NY. And, stories like this are the result.

A person who truly cared about this mixed up 5th grader would make them understand that a boy is a boy, and a girl is a girl. The homosexual mafia is a disgusting thing.

A thought like that crossed my mind, too.
At best, this poor boy is a mixedup kid who's in need of some serious counselling to get his head on straight. And, it sounds like the school is enabling this little fantasy of his.
At worst, the kid is a deviant (or more likely, a curious 11 year old boy) that gets his jollies by going in the girls' bathroom. And, it sounds like the school is enabling this little fantasy of his.
Either way, the school is at fault and likely is desperately wishing that Mr. Melanson would just go away. Thus, the hit piece in the paper (note the dismissive tone of the school admin's quotes).

I think it was the one where Randy was upset that there was no bathroom for dolphins after he underwent a "dolphinoplasty"! I loved that episode.

I must admit, if the whole enforced perversion thing keeps going the direction that it’s going, I’m looking for another country.
On this issue in particular, I’m not proud of the USA any more.

Next time, another child may claim to be bisexual. Should he/she be allowed to use both the boys & girls restrooms? How about PE class or team sports? Can he/she dress out in either locker room, then shower wherever he/she wishes? If this had been the rule when I was in school many years ago, many of the boys would have claimed to be bisexual. Today, I suspect ALL of the boys would claim bisexuality, as would many of the girls.
The only real solution, short of shaming the perverts back into the closet, is to change the signs on the restrooms. One should have a picture of a penis, & the other should have a picture of a vagina - the school’s problem is solved. As for the boy, if he wants to use the vagina room, he’ll need some surgery.

It’s hard enough to do your “business” in a smelly, filthy, restroom, surrounded by grunting men. It would be nearly impossible for me if that were WOMEN on either side of me! The principal needs to start using the faculty women’s restroom for a while, so he/she/it can fully appreciate the situation.
I’m sure I don’t know. Once the boys are out of diapers, they’re responsible for their own hygeine until they get married.
I think you two are on to something. I would not be at all surprised to find that one or more adults is either grooming or already abusing the boy.
That is freakin’ outrageous. Honestly, this is so far crazy it’s hard to believe it’s happening. We either need to disban public schools or lose the country, period.
