Romney: Man of Year choice (Putin) 'disgusting'
CNN ^ | Dec. 19, 2007 | Alexander Mooney

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Count Republican Mitt Romney among those who aren't happy with Time Magazine's choice of Russian President Vladimir Putin for Person of the Year.

In an interview with CNN's Glen Beck, the presidential candidate called the choice "disgusting."

"You know, he imprisoned his political opponents. There have been a number of highly suspicious murders," Romney said on Beck's radio show. "He has squelched public dissent and free press. And to suggest that someone like that is the Man of the Year is really disgusting. I'm just appalled."

"Clearly General Petraeus is the person, or one of a few people, who would certainly merit that designation," the former Massachusetts governor added.

Rival presidential candidate John McCain also said Wednesday he disagreed with the choice.

Remember hearing the interview...Mitt really seemed to be shocked w the Putin choice...and didnt know about it until Beck told him. Not staged or anything.

Romney is right anout the poor choice of Vlad Putin. Wonder if Romney was so dissed about this because Vlad went after that Yukos oil company a few yra ago (going ater businesses not friendly w Putin)

That will be awkward if Mitt gets elected and has to meet with him.

Tell it like it is. . .Mitt, John and I hope the rest of the line-up. For sure Fred; will let them hear.

Truth is; no matter how Time and the Libs defend the 'nuances' of what it mean to be 'Man of the Year'. . .we know better. Time IS disgusting. Let them know a number of years back, how I felt; when I canceled a my subscription to this magazine I grew up with.

Hope all who are thorougly disgusted with these anti-patriots; send a similar message.

It is the ONLY message they will appreciate.

What’s with all the indignation?

“...for better or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year.”

Those are the criteria. IOW, Putin did a lot of bad stuff this year, more than anyone else did good or bad. I kind of agree.

Not as awkward as W looking into the soul of that professional killer and finding something good. Well done Mitt.

“...for better or for worse,"

Yup, and it's often for worse -- Hitler ('38), Stalin ('39 and '42), Kruschev ('57), Khomeini ('79),...etc.

Ya know, he's really going out on a limb here with such clever, hard hitting attacks.

Romney needs to get a clue. “He has squelched public dissent and free press.” Thus the reason he got the award! That’s why Hitler, Stalin and even Wallis Simpson (of Edward VIII fame) have been on the list.

Reagan didn’t shy away from calling the USSR an evil empire, we need someone like that again, and not just for dealing with Russia.

Awkward? Nope. Not if he were to stand by what he said. Then it would be a damn breath of fresh air.

Awkward? Good; hope it is beyond awkward. Hope it is painful - for Putin. He needs to be made afraid; very afraid. . .

The situations we are finding ourselves in; in great measure are due to 'lack of fear' - lack of fearful respect - thanks to our country's weakened, collective 'ego' and the 'political correctness' that we too often define ourselves by.

Awkward? I hope much worse for those who are in truth, our enemies.

Every time TIME picks a villain for Gender-Free Person of the Year, it has to be pointed out that it isn’t an honor. Hitler was Man of the Year several times. Romney should be glad TIME is calling attention to what Putin in up to.

Oh, I don’t know. At least Putin is competent and puts the interests of Russia first. We’re the boobs who support the Muslims in Europe.

Maybe Putin should come here and run for president.

Wow! Did you read some of the comments of those CNN readers? They have Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS) real bad.
I know it’s kind of a joke but I really think there is something to the disease.

That will be awkward if Mitt gets elected and has to meet with him.

Obviously he wasn't thinking his comments through with regards to foreign policy.

Time's choice is disgusting, and Romney's comments are reasonably accurate if a bit on the extreme side. However, Romney should be a little more careful how he phrases his criticism of foreign elected officials.

Not a lot more careful, but a little more careful.

However, I will say that overall his comments do raise my opinion of him rather than lessen it. His comments weren't diplomatic, but they were candid and reasonably accurate.

What’s wrong with selecting Vladimir Putin?

He may be the leading despot in the world, by now.

What’s really telling, though, is selecting Gore to be #2 and Petraeus, #4.

I have to agree that the only authentic award would have gone to General Petraeus. I understand TIME's posture about the award not being an endorsement of acts or policies but a recognition of impact. Yet if these chickens*t delinquents were not themselves derelict in their coverage of Iraq they would have seen how the change of fortunes in Iraq this year alone promises to re-direct the history of the entire Middle East.

But that's what happens when you let irresponsible children play with grown-up tools.

Reagan was right. The Soviet Union was evil and Putin is not much better IMO.

He is "dissed" about this because the traitorous commies at Time just showed their underlying allegiance to a notorious murderer and exporter of nuclear technology to the world's worst criminals. The left will support anything and anyone to destroy the United States and its role in the world. It has been that way for three generations. Some of us have just noticed and grown tired of letting them get away with it, again.
