MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY

Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

MORE

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about jounalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

Frankly, I don’t believe it. Drudge leaking it was a hit job, and thinly veiled bias. I have nothing else to say on this matter.

...Mccain wasnt found guilty of anything with the keating 5 scandal. thats done and its over with. or do u assume someone is guilty just because they were accused even if cleared of wrong doing? move to russia

McCain admitted that: ''The appearance of it was wrong,'' McCain said.

''It's a wrong appearance when a group of senators appear in a meeting with a group of regulators, because it conveys the impression of undue and improper influence. And it was the wrong thing to do.

... and McCain was rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee. I think stating he was cleared is a little too simplistic. If you mean by cleared he didn't do any jail time, yeah, I guess you're correct.

Yeah, by all means, let's just move that's done and over with. St. John has bigger fish to fry now.

Knowing the Slimes, I'm sure their concern was over how best to avoid such ethics.

“If I was looking for a Republican to blame, I’d blame Mitt Romney. He benefits most.”

You are absolutely right. McCain was starting to surge in NH. Mitt was in danger of loosing both Iowa and NH in a row. The timing of this was perfect to maximize the damage before the primaries without giving McCain time to recover. This whole thing stinks of Mitt.

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries

For those intelligent enough to grasp it, that line says everything that need be said about the state of journalism these days.

No she didn’t order extra for herself.

She got prescriptions filled in the names of other staff members.

That is illegal - unless you’re married to a politician.

So what’s McCain trying to sneak thru before anybody finds out about this time? Didn’t the idiot learn his lesson on the shamnesty, or is that what he’s pushing again? And some people are considering this ass to lead this country- I don’t think so!

"editor Keller expressed serious reservations about journalism eithics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election"

LOL. As though such journalistic "ethics" gave anyone pause when they ran with the GWB story of a DWI just 4 days before the national election in 2000!!!!! No, a better read would be that the journalistic ethics of a leftist hack like Bill Keller would dictate that the NY Times first try to help McCain get the R. nomination, and THEN torpedo his candidacy shortly before the Nov. 2008 elections.

Just what we need, a candidate who owes his political life to the NY Slimes. The story seems to have been spiked and Drudge has gone into hiding from big bad Bennett.

Guess McCain can’t understand why the media (who he believed loved him), has betrayed him and revealed stuff about McCain which may or may not be true.

I’m not a McCain supporter so quite frankly, I don’t give a damn.

But .. it does show me that Hillary is terrified of him - and Clinton, Inc. is turning up the heat. That’s gratitude for ya .. after all the times McCain collaborated with Hillary or the dems on legislation.
