Police want to get tougher with handling of non-fatal shootings
In an effort to reduce overall gun violence and homicides, the Milwaukee Police Department is looking for ways to beef up its investigations of non-fatal shootings, a commander said Wednesday.
Milwaukee Police Officer Cory Washington and Milwaukee Fire Department paramedic Capt. Brian Reynolds assist a gunshot victim on N. Holton St. in October 2006.
By treating non-fatal shootings more like homicides, police hope to prevent killings and send a message to the community that any gun violence will be treated very seriously by the department, said Capt. David Zibolski, head of the Homicide Division.

Very good point!

Knives and baseball bats are A-OK in their book! A person may be less dead as a result.
Does that include when poice discharge their weapons in schools or shoot themselves in the leg?
This is actually a good effort. Milwaukee’s inner city is a war zone. There are 8 non-fatal shootings for every fatal shooting — and many of the non-fatal shootings would be fatal without the heroic efforts at the Froedtert Hospital trauma center.
Many vicious gang members are let off with a slap on the wrist simply because they failed to kill their intended victim. They usually manage to kill someone eventually. If the gang members were locked up after their first shooting, they wouldn’t be able to kill innocents later.
—my cynical guess is that this will be another anti-gun crusade, instead of anything positive—
That appears to be the case, but the press is hoplophobic [1] and they play to fear, uncertainty and doubt. It is always an uphill battle to remind people that guns, and indeed bullets, are only objects that are used as a means to accomplish and end by those who use them. The press only erodes and corrodes liberty and the ability of free people to keep and bear arms by always writing headlines that imply bullets only can cause harm.
