Man turns blue

By Duncan Hooper
Last Updated: 3:48pm GMT 21/12/2007

An American man's attempts to cure an irritating skin condition backfired when his face turned blue.

Fair-skinned Paul Karason developed dermatitis as a result of stress 14 years ago and decided to treat it using silver extract.

Paul Karason's says he has moved states and avoids public places

The substance is usually consumed orally but Mr Karason also decided to rub it into his peeling skin to accelerate the effects.

According to the 57-year-old, the effect began so gradually that neither he nor he friends noticed the change at first.

He told US television that he is now so embarrassed about his condition that he has moved states and seeks to avoid public places.

Proponents say that colloidal silver, the substance Mr Karason says is responsible for his changing hue, can help boost the immune system and help prevent diseases. It has even been touted as a treatment for AIDS and cancer.

However, the US Food and Drug Administration has rejected most of these claims.

The FDA notes that use of colloidial silver can cause a condition known as argyria, an irreversible discolouration of the skin.

If he's so embarrassed then why does he go on a television show?

Other than bismuth and iodine, Are there any elements on or below the fifth row of the Periodic Table that aren't considered harmful?

Also, out of curiosity, do they still make those silver-colored cookie decorations which one isn't supposed to eat but many people do?

and all day and all night and everything he sees

and a blue corvette
and everything is blue for him and hisself
and everybody around
cos he ain’t got nobody to listen to

i’m blue da ba dee da ba die...

i have a blue house with a blue window.
blue is the colour of all that i wear.
blue are the streets and all the trees are blue.
i have a girlfriend and she is so blue.
blue are the people here that walk around,
blue like my corvette, it’s standing outside.
blue are the words i say and what i think.
blue are the feelings that live inside me.

I wonder if the silver could be chelated out?

Then it would get to his kidneys and liver.

Searching "colloidal" or "nanophase silver" is scary-it is touted for so many things. A few cranks make a cult of it.

At one time women in Bavaria ate arsenic; It gave them a nice complexion. Mercury was used to treat VD.

Generally, metals and toxic metalloids are not a good idea. The fellow in the picture is old enough to have known better because when he went to school, Science was taught to most people, not just the nerds. Why, someone could just look up the MSDS for silver and take a minute:

"Toxic! Effects of overexposure. Acute and chronic: May be irritating to mucous membrane and upper respiratory tract. May cause argyria.Target organs: Tumoregenic. Persons with pre-existing disorders may be more susceptible. "

However, the search turned up MANY sites promoting it; A sickening number. Ths is one of those search items where fringe medicine outshouts Science in the search engines, and utterly swamps it.

This is just crazy. Well, it was his choice.

They are vacuum or sputter deposited aluminum, a few microns thick, if that. Silver tarnishes with many food products. The gold is another matter.

The wealthy people of old were users of colloidal silver, in attempts to cure Syphilis, and apparently it worked, but caused argyria, the first signs of which were a 'blue-hue' in the blood.

Since only the wealthy could afford the treatments, they became known as 'Blue-Bloods' ................. FRegards
