One-Man Gridlock: Meet Tom Coburn, Senate's 'Dr. No'
Wall Street Journal ^ | December 21, 2007 | Sarah Lueck

Posted on 12/21/2007 11:41:06 PM PST by County Agent Hank Kimball

WASHINGTON -- On Tuesday afternoon, when most senators were preparing to leave Washington for the holiday recess, Tom Coburn was declaring his intention to stick around.

"The floor's going to be open," said the 59-year-old Oklahoma Republican. "I'm going to have to be here...to try to stop stuff."

Stopping stuff is Sen. Coburn's specialty. In a Congress that has had trouble passing even the simplest legislation, Sen. Coburn, who proudly wears the nickname "Dr. No,'' is a one-man gridlock machine. This year, the senator, who indeed is a medical doctor, single-handedly blocked or slowed more than 90 bills, driving lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to distraction.

He blocked a ban on genetic discrimination by health insurers. He thwarted a bill to set up a program to track patients with Lou Gehrig's disease. Also nixed: an effort to promote safe Internet use by children and a resolution to honor the late environmentalist Rachel Carson on the 100th anniversary of her birth.

A bill that would authorize government mapping of the ocean floor and coastal areas? No way. One that would require more data collection on the availability and quality of broadband service? Uh-uh. If Dr. Coburn had his way, there would be no new funding for a Justice Department office to investigate unsolved Civil Rights-era killings, no promotion of wild-land firefighter safety....

Now HERE'S a real conservative hero. Reminds me of the Phil Crane of the 60's and 70's in the House. We need more men like Coburn, and Freepers ought to give him their support!

If only he were running for President.

Indeed, he should be running, instead of the trash RINOs Rudy McRombee.

What is there to celebrate about Rachel Carlson? Tens of millions of dead Africans want to know.

What is this in the article, with Reid, Turbin and Yawn Kerry complaining about...of all things...OBSTRUCTION? TYRANNY OF ONE? Talk about the pot meeting the mofoing kettle!

Coburn ought to tell them, "You all were the ones who decided to keep the Senate "in session", denying the President powers explicitly given to him in the Constitution (to make recess appointments), since the Senate would technically not be "in recess". Turnabout is fair ****ing play.

As for Dingy Harry calling Coburn's tactics "unreasonable", that useless piece of ambulating carbon dioxide would do well to keep his punch drunk yap shut, since he keeps getting pwn3d by the likes of Rush and the Republicans. (perchance, to dream...)

Coburn is one of the few good guys in Congress. I hope he hangs in there and runs for a second term.

Well said, and I offer another great truth. “What is their to celebrate about the ASS Hooooooooool that got saccharine banned in the US. Millions of diabetics have suffered from the affects of aspartame, etc. “

God bless the voters of OK who have the character and good sense to send this remarkable man to the Senate. On the other hand, there are the voters of CA, NV, NY, NJ, and MA who send us the dregs of liberalism and deserve our scorn.

The Sooner State is blessed w conservative pro-American leaders.

I would trade my FL Senators (Space Cadet and Illegal Alien) for Dr Coburn anyday...of course OK would not want the two libs...

I mean, what state produces two goofball Senators like FL does....one of them wants to have “intercourse” with our troops (Before or after pulling out of Iraq, Sen Nelson?)...and the other wants to let all the illegals stay (GOP chair Martinez)

God bless him! If we had even 15 more like him in the Senate we would not have lost the majority. The Drive-bys continue to blame Bush and Iraq for the Democrat take over, but we know that it was the irresponsible spending and increased government that kept conservatives away from the polls.

a resolution to honor the late environmentalist Rachel Carson on the 100th anniversary of her birth.

I'm on board with this. Rachel Carson started a movement that I would argue has caused as much harm as good. I read "Silent Spring" in high school. Fortunately for me, I had a teacher who had the good sense to tell me that "the woman's a quack".

What I would like to know, however, is why Dr. Coburn didn't stop the fascist "energy" legislation that will ultimately lead to the demise of American auto makers?

Twelfth Amendment effectively requires that the President and Vice-president reside in different States. The electors in each state must vote for a President OR a Vice-president from a different state than their own.

I am an Oklahoma citizen who is very proud of Dr Tom. He survived the Pubbie smear team in the primaries and won the Senate seat. He is a good conservative.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the Pubbies also have a “Dr. No” in the lower house? Isn’t he running for President and getting smeared from one end of the country to the other by all the good “Conservatives” on this board?
LOL.
