Roman Catholics have overtaken Anglicans as the country's dominant religious group. More people attend Mass every Sunday than worship with the Church of England, figures seen by The Sunday Telegraph show.
Blair becomes Catholic in private ceremony The changing face of British Christianity Your view: What can the Church of England do to win back worshippers? This means that the established Church has lost its place as the nation's most popular Christian denomination after more than four centuries of unrivalled influence following the Reformation.

Last night, leading figures gave warning that the Church of England could become a minority faith and that the findings should act as a wake-up call.
The statistics show that attendance at Anglican Sunday services has dropped by 20 per cent since 2000. A survey of 37,000 churches, to be published in the new year, shows the number of people going to Sunday Mass in England last year averaged 861,000, compared with 852,000 Anglicans worshipping.
The rise of Catholicism has been bolstered by an influx of immigrants from eastern Europe and Africa, who have packed the pews of Catholic parishes that had previously been dwindling.
It is part of the changing face of churchgoing across Britain in the 21st century which has also seen a boom in the growth of Pentecostal churches, which have surpassed the Methodist Church as the country's third largest Christian denomination.
Worshipping habits have changed dramatically with a significant rise in attendance at mid-week services and at special occasions - the Church of England expects three million people to go to a parish church over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Come all you Catholic haters, this is your third chance in two days to flame Rome!
I suggest dropping the BS and start praying... we have bigger fish to fry.
Can we get our churches back now? Or are they mosques?
More logical heads prevail.
Just as I was about to dump you come up with a logical alternative. Yes, prayer is the answer, and will always be the answer. Thank you for your guidance.
Would the rest of you just look at this, now! Sure and you wouldn’t think of such a thing, Britain being majority Catholic and all that, what not! But just blessed somebody’s who’s counted Christians’ got to take up the cudgel against the bloody Mahommetans now, don’t they?
Our own Saint Patrick once chased all the serpents from the British Isles and he can do so once again now can’t he, lads?
`Mohammed’ the second most given boys’ name, is it? I’ll just be betting the lot of you that none of these named after their bloody `prophet’ knows naught about throwing a good old fashioned Irish uppercut, now do they?
That’s what AK-47s and airliners are for, aren’t they?
Will the last person to leave the Anglican Faith, please turn out the light!
Paging the Defender of the Faith. Oh, wait, the defender-apparent is a TROP aficionado. Better the country is aligned with the Pope. Nevermind
And in recent years Irish citizens have settled in the UK by the hundreds of thousands....or more.
To late, the last true Anglican left long ago, and didnt have to turn the light off, if has been off for years.
So have a lot of Poles.
But it doesn’t help that so many of the COE hierarchy are batso.
“Come all you Catholic haters, this is your third chance in two days to flame Rome!”
Huh?
True enough.I was in Ireland and the UK earlier this year and I swear that every waitress and most of the front desk help in the hotels we ran into in Ireland were Polish.

England a catholic nation again. Get out of town. What will the King say? Oops the Queen.
Maybe people have left the Church of England because it has become a left-wing PC organization. Did not the Archbishop of Canterbury question the whole idea of the nativity a few days ago?
Anglicans don’t have faith anymore, just mushy feeling. It isn’t fair to call them a religion...more like a country club for liberals.
Well, I guess the divorce rate among the British royalty will plummet. They’ll have to go back to lopping off the heads of the unwanted wives. The mussies will like that.
As an evangelical, I dont hate Catholics I just think they are wrong in their theology and pray for them daily.
There is a virulent anti-religious feeling in that country and it is growing.
If one looks at the numbers over the past several decades, rather than a single snapshot in time figure, it becomes obvious that the numbers of both Catholics and Anglicans attending church has been falling dramatically. It's just that the Anglican fall off has been more precipitous than the Catholic fall off.
That is the real truth and it's no cause for celebration.
Ya want reasons?

“What can the Church of England do to win back worshippers?”
Become more like the Catholic Church - stop gay ordinations and marriages and start talking morality instead of political correctness.
Personally as a non-specific kind of Protestant, I this point I think all Orthodox thinking Christians need to unite against the common menace of Islam and stop arguing theological points of little relevence.
Sure, Blame the Irish!!!!
I’m Catholic. I have this vision of St. Peter standing outside the Pearly Gates next to a sign that says, “Check your denomination here.”
Guess he didn't like the Big Bird hat either.
Catholics and Protestants believe in:
The Bible
the Trinity
Jesus Christ as a personal saviour and Son of God
Heaven and hell
A Last Judgement
A Resurrection of the dead
The Nicene Creed
Muslims believe in:
An Arab Moon God
Killing anyone who doesn’t convert
A pedophilic desert bandit as the Last Messanger of God
Women as personal possessions
Dogs as unclean
Forbidding consumption of beer, whiskey, ale, wine and all similar good traditional western beverages containing alcohol
No pork chops, frankfurters, pork loins, or pork roasts.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Catholics and Protestants are far closer to each other than either is to Islam.
The world didnt need the catholic church to preserve the bible. How arrogant. God would have preserved His Word with or without the Popes church.
ping
Am I supposed to be grateful for your tolerance?
I agree with you completely. Sadly though, they will go to their graves arguing those "points of little relevance."
IF this is true why are there so many threads about how Islam is taking over there and Mohammad is more popular than George? (the Names)
Next time you are reading the Holy Bible, thank the Lord for the Church. Without the Church, there would be no written bible. The Holy Scripture is God’s gift to the Church.
And then thank the Lord for the Protestant movement so you can have a personal copy of the Bible and have it printed in a language other than Latin.
No, just tolerant of those that dont believe exactly as you do, as a Christian should.
Some of us do have a problem with them molesting little boys though.
Yes. If Catholic Priests and Public School Teachers were allowed to marry the children would be much safer.
What does marriage have to do with a sick perverted mind? You think that would solve the “Catholic Problem”?
“..they will go to their graves arguing those “points of little relevance.”
Unfortunately they might be taking Christianity with them in the process.
Nope, I would credit Gutenberg for that. He made it all possible.
It isn’t a Catholic problem. It is a societal problem. Priests, or any clergy who have molested are held up by the media because they are expected to be above sin. Please take your Catholic bashing elsewhere.
The fact is that God used the Church He established on earth, the Catholic Church, to collect, Canonize, preserve, protect and defend the Scriptures so that beginning 11 centuries later people like Luther, et al, could utilize their free will and begin abridging and editing it to their liking. Denial of that fact is both arrogance and ignorance on your part.
I will not condemn every Priest, Teacher and Clown based upon the behavior of a few. Yes, schools, courts and dioceses have failed to adequately prosecute.
I turned away from the Catholic Church long ago. Later I discovered Bible based Christianity (without the Missle and the Mass). When I really read God’s Word I felt angry at the Church. After much time and much prayer I let go of my anger and felt a lot of chains fall from my soul.
And despite all that, Gods word prevailed. Praise Jesus.
thanks..
are you going to the party in jan?
.
Maybe now they will finally leave Ireland.
