“And I told my friend, not to worry, that people in the USA for example
were really starting to rise up against political correctness
and the societal ban on “Merry Christmas” in a big way.”

This is basically a repost I made yesterday:

Yesterday (12-22-07) as I and my co-workers were ending our workday
at an office of a large American corporation...I guess I “played
it safe” after all my reading about “the war on Christmas”...
much of it at FR.

So, as I exited the office, I did medium shout of
“if I don’t see you until later, ‘Happy Holidays!’”.

I admit I was shocked and happy when the three co-workers shouted
in reply AND nearly in unison, ALONG WITH SOME CUSTOMERS
IN THE LOBBY AREA
“MERRY CHRISTMAS!”.

It was a happy and weird moment at the same time!

Gratifying. In the late 50s,my Dad took a job im NYC as a staff pastor to our Lutheran missionaries and native pastors in Japan,Hong Cong and Malasia. He visited several times. I wonder how many Lutherans there are left there.

Some of the MOST attractively decorated and cheerfully celebratory Christmases I’ve enjoyed were OUT of the U.S....

#1 - Germany
#2 - Japan
#3 - Czechoslovakia
#4 - Scotland

Based on the focuse entertainment of children, decorations, Public Music & Street Shows, Snow and the GOOD TIMES in the local restaurants and bars....

Unfortunately — the family was missing — and that just about ruins it....

This is from a church some people I know visited when they were in japan.

They have a website and a blog.

"Gospel music" is displayed prominently on that poster. I've read a few "testimonies" where some bored middle aged japanese house wife watches some American movie with a gospel choir in it, joins some gospel singing class not knowing what the words mean, and eventually convert to Christianity.

Merry Christmas AIT - and thanks for the posting.

You're right - such a conflict of feelings when looking at these pictures and reading this report. Warm feelings that - even though it is clearly on a superficial level - the folks in Japan our unabashedly unashamed about proclaiming a 'Merry Christmas' to one and all (I just hope somewhere along the lines they start considering a bit more about what this 'Christmas thing' is really about). A chilly feeling when I consider that you won't see "Merry Christmas" banners in any large department stores here in the United States. Ostensibly a majority Christian country - but cowed by the ACLU and the religion of PC.
Thanks, though, for the post - and a Very Merry Christmas to you!

Here's the most embarrassing photo I could find from that church.

I would be more offended if my local department stores started to commercialize the holiday like in those pictures.

When does the Christmas Holiday celebration start in Japan?

Do they limit it to December or is it smeared across the last 3 months of the year like here in the states?

When confronted with a “Happy Holidays” I’ve started replying, “What holiday would that be?”

I’ve gotten a few confused looks, but so far no one has failed to answer “Christmas”. To which I reply “And a Merry Christmas to you too.”
