Four Pinocchios for Romney on MLK ("Well, it was somebody who certainly looked like him.")
Washington Post ^ | December 23, 2007 | Michael Dobbs "The Fact Checker"

Posted on 12/23/2007 2:18:05 PM PST by greyfoxx39

"They [George Romney and Martin Luther King] were hand in hand...They led the march. We all swung our hands, and they held their hands up above everybody else's."

Quote distributed by the Mitt Romney campaign.

-SNIP-

After news reports challenged Mitt Romney's repeated accounts of his father marching with Martin Luther King, his campaign put a reporter from Politico in touch with eyewitnesses who claimed to have seen the former Michigan governor "hand in hand" with the civil rights leader. But their memories are almost certainly flawed as contemporaneous news reports show that King was addressing a meeting in New Jersey at the time the eyewitnesses supposedly saw him in Grosse Pointe, MI.

The Facts

-SNIP-

Romney did show up at a smaller march the following Saturday in the exclusive Grosse Pointe suburb of Michigan to protest housing discrimination. But contemporaneous news reports show that King had left the Michigan area by then, and was traveling in the Northeast

-SNIP-

"I was fifteen feet away from them [Romney and MLK]," said Robertson, 64, who attended Grosse Pointe high school. "You don't forget that kind of thing."

I called up one of the eyewitnesses cited by Politico and the Romney campaign, Ashby Robertson.

-SNIP-

When I told Robertson that news reports placed Martin Luther King in New Jersey at the time, he replied: "Well, it was somebody who certainly looked like him."

Are you making excuses for Romney's laundry list of prevarications?

The fact of the matter is that Romney lied about this, and when he tried to cover it up by bringing out a bunch of eyewitnesses, he did nothing more than make liars out of them.

Maybe this isn't that big of a deal, but it is a pattern with this guy. He can't be trusted. He is the republican version of Bill Clinton.

Gentlemen, there's one hell of a man named Fred Thompson, that in my book is a real American and he needs your help .

You should be ready to fight to defend the freedoms so many have given their all to protect and defend.  If you think you can sit back and ignore the danger to our nation or if you think you can just ignore it and it'll go away, well mister you're dead wrong.  Oh, and one other thing, these bastards we are fighting don't like you and never will like you.  They just want to kill you and your family for their Allah.  One other thing, some like ...what's his name ..Huckabuster or something like that...think if we will just talk with them we can make them our friends.  What a bunch of horse manure.

Now before it's too late, get up from that comfortable couch , pick up the phone and tell someone on the other end, you're not taking this crap anymore.  Call your state party officials, the NRA,, the Minute Men, or any other conservative group you can think of and tell them to get off their asses.  You want a real conservative for your commander and chief, no pansy ass liberals need apply.   Got it!

Me and some other real men are watching ,so don't screw it up

General George S. Patton Jr., Commanding

Get off you asses and get to work for Fred.

Democratic Governor Endorses Mike Huckabee

Instead we have conservatives lining up behind Mike Huckabee because he agrees with them on two issues - gay marriage and abortion - neither of which the president can do much about. And all the while they ignore his liberal history as governor of Arkansas. If Huckabee is a real conservative, explain this: Since he's running in the Republican primaries for president, don't expect Mike Huckabee to be advertising the strong endorsement he just got from Ted Strickland, Ohio's Democratic governor.

It seems Mr. Strickland, who typically racked up a 95% rating from the liberal Americans for Democratic Action during his 16 years in Congress, has discovered a kindred spirit in Mr. Huckabee. He told the Cincinnati Enquirer last Sunday that Mr. Huckabee is a "combination of conservative views in some ways, but very, almost liberal views in other ways." Mr. Strickland concluded: "Of all the Republican candidates, Mr. Huckabee would be my personal choice."

NOW,,, THERE SHOULD BE NOT DOUBT IN YOUR MIND....HUCKABEE IS LOVED BY DEMOCRATS.

God save us if he is actually nominated by the Republican party, or should I say "former" Republican party ..if that actually occurs.

YOUR CHOICE                           This                         OR                                   This.

NEITHER IS A PRETTY PICTURE

“it’s Mittbots when confronted with FACTS. “

No, they were not facts. There are conflicting accounts. Some MSM references from 1960’s and 2 independent witnesses say one thing, and AP/NYT say otherwise. You are 100% sure that AP/NYT story is the absolute fact.

I don’t know what is the truth. I do know MLK and Romney’s father worked together, and at least one march they planned to attend together (but it was on Sunday so Romney did not attend) but there were many opportunities that to happen. Maybe some time they did march together. Maybe the dates are wrong, or NYT account is incorrect. In anycase, MLK and Romney’s father worked together and planned to march together. Whether their schedules did work out, that I don’t know. This is a nightmare for DNC/Hillary. Blacks are already angry about attacks on Obama and Romney as the republican candidate would doom Hillary. That’s why DNC/MSM is working overtime.

Wall Street Journal: Democrats know it. Here’s an interesting statistic: Since the beginning of 2007, the Democratic National Committee has released 102 direct attacks on Mitt Romney. Rudy Giuliani has warranted 78; John McCain 68; Fred Thompson 21.

Regarding the speeches/dates of MLK in 1963.....Yes. They had absolutely no reason to lie about where MLK appeared in 1963.

You are so desperate to believe "Myth" that anything contrary to your view is suspect and a plot to defame him. Get your head out of his butt long enough to breathe and wake up to the fact that he "stretched the truth"!

I know, the papers lied when they were covering MLK in the 60's just so supposed eyewitnesses could be defamed today....that's it....sure.

I can tell from your home page that YOU DRINK WINE! ;)

Looks can be deceiving. I'm an alcoholic and haven't imbibed in going on 27 years. I think those are water glasses but that's a coffee cup in front of me and I understand that caffeniated coffee is verboten also.

My wife is the wino in the family, she and my youngest daughter usually have a glass or two around Christmas time.

You admit you don't know the truth, but Mitt is right in your eyes, truth or lie, huh? He stated in his speech, "I SAW my father march with MLK"...but that's enough for you?

You are dreaming with your theory that "this is a nightmare for DNC/Hillary. Blacks are already angry about attacks on Obama and Romney as the republican candidate would doom Hillary." LOL, we are supposed to believe that blacks are angry about attacks on Romney, who's church didn't become non-racist until 1978?

I hope your pay check from the campaign is a big one, you certainly are busting your butt trying to earn it.

If Hillary beats Obama for the 'Rat nomination it might lead to a lower black turnout in 2008, particularly if the primary contest is close and Hillary has to get really, really dirty to beat Obama.

But no matter who the GOP nominee is, he'll get about 10% of the black vote. Romney won't pick up a single black vote for having a father who marched for civil rights. He'll still be called a racist, and he'll end up sounding like a RINO if he tries to "prove" otherwise.

“Yes. They had absolutely no reason to lie about where MLK appeared in 1963.”

There are other MSM references (dating back to 1960’s) conflicting NYT story and stating that MLK and Romney Sr marched together. They had no apparent reason to lie either. 2 independent black witnesses showed up contradicting NYT story. (And NYT would have every motive to lie, because MSM is attacking Romney every way they can).

As I said, I don’t what is the truth but I know that MLK and Romney planned to march together and several sources claim that it did happen. What I do know, is that DNC/Hillary is attacking Romney every way they can. Romney would get a lot of black votes against Hillary.

Lookie, lookie what I found......Okay...maybe you'll believe this resource. It's directly from the site, Rutgers, where he appeared on the weekend of June 27th, 1963. This isn't from "the liberal MSM"

The IMLR: Labor Education at Rutgers University, 1931-1981

The twenty-eighth Summer Institute, held on the weekend of June 27-29, 1963, featured Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was touring the country in support of the famous "March on Washington" that took place in August of that year.

as I said, there were several marches all over the country. MLK and Romney planned to march together, and I don’t whether their schedules actually allowed it. In anycase, several sources, including some MSM sources from 1960’s and independent african-american witnesses say they did march together.

This background would be disaster for Hillary and Romney would be well-positioned to take more votes from disgruntled blacks than Bush did in 2000. This would guarantee a win for Romney.

Wall Street Journal: “Since the beginning of 2007, the Democratic National Committee has released 102 direct attacks on Mitt Romney. Rudy Giuliani has warranted 78; John McCain 68; Fred Thompson 21. “
