Pantone, Inc., the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, selected PANTONE 18-3943 Blue Iris, a beautifully balanced blue-purple, as the color of the year for 2008. Combining the stable and calming aspects of blue with the mystical and spiritual qualities of purple, Blue Iris satisfies the need for reassurance in a complex world, while adding a hint of mystery and excitement.
"From a color forecasting perspective, we have chosen PANTONE 18-3943 Blue Iris as the color of the year, as it best represents color direction in 2008 for fashion, cosmetics and home products," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "As a reflection of the times, Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspect of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic. Look for it artfully combined with deeper plums, red-browns, yellow-greens, grapes and grays."

Good lord. Pantone is recognized as the world authority on color.

Can it really be that the color for 2008 is BLUE ??? Why not a nice bright (dare I say Day-Glo) RED ???

NOTE OF CAUTION: Pantone 18-3943 Blue Iris may appear differently on you computer monitor than on the actual company color chip. Please keep this in mind as you view this thread and the color sample shown.

And if anyone is interested, NurdlyPeon, Inc., the global authority on days and provider of professional day standards for the design industries, selected NurdlyPeon 18-3943 Tuesday, a beautifully balanced winter day, as the Day Of The Week for the Christmas Week of 2007. Merry Christmas everyone.

This is politically correct. Why select a color that could be used for the Blue States? They should have selected something neutral... Say a nice beige.

Color me confused -- I had no idea "they" had "rules" that would change like that.
Who are "they"? The National Committees? The media? Where are the rules published?
The Wikipedia page on "red" and "blue" state color designations says that it's a creation of the media... and there's nothing about it changing from election to election...

I was gonna say something sarcastic, but that is a nice color.
And it actually has a real color in the name. (”Tangerine” is NOT a color. Neither is “taupe,” for that matter).

The color is more purple than blue. Might be the color setting of your monitor...
"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity..."

Little old ladies with lavender hair are going to love this color. I can see that. I actually kind of like the color (my post was tongue-in-cheek). In fact, my screen/desktop background is an abstract wash of blue-purple into gold (one of the Macintosh OS-X stock backgrounds), and it has a lot of this in it.

As far as I can tell, it is a media convention. But the convention, until 2000, was challenging party Red. But the Red Tide was such a phenomenon in 2000, I think the Republicans own Red now.

Nope. I have the Pantone swatch book. Based on the number and the line position, it is more in the purple hue than blue.

For those interested, check out this website for lots of pantone colors: www.exhibitsolutions.com/pms_chart.html
The print industry language is spoken as: PMS 185 for example. Which means Pamtone Matching System #185 (standard red, by the way).

Yup. I'm a designer and I have an (old) Pantone book in my home office. Terms like “blue” and “red” have little meaning in the system, even more so terms like “rose” or "taupe”. Printing colors also cannot be readily reproduced in things like paint and fabrics.
