Thompson eyes 'strong showing' in Iowa
Washington Times ^ | 12/28/07 | By Stephen Dinan

URBANDALE, Iowa — Fred Thompson is flooding this state with his best asset — himself — hoping voters are tired of the other Republican presidential candidates and willing to take a second look at his own candidacy before next week's caucuses.

Meanwhile, former governors Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Mike Huckabee of Arkansas are firing off back-and-forth attacks, while Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani signaled yesterday they are essentially folding their efforts here and moving on to New Hampshire.

Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest is next Thursday, and the campaigns' bets are now in — and Mr. Thompson, a former Tennessee senator, has the most to gain or lose.

"We had to have a very strong showing in some of the early states so we could go to South Carolina in a competitive mode, and we decided Iowa is the best for that," said William B. Lacy, Mr. Thompson's campaign manager, who said Iowa is "just tailor-made" for the kind of barnstorming tour Mr. Thompson is conducting. He said the hope is with Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Romney "fighting it out at the top, to just slide right up through the middle."

"We're kind of placing a large bet people are taking a second look, that they're not locked in," Mr. Lacy said.

In poker, it would be the all-in strategy, and in Mr. Thompson's case, it involves nearly two weeks of bus-tour campaigning across this state, trying to capitalize on Republican voters' ennui.

Thanks John Let's keep the pickup rolling!
In 1994 Fred climbed inside a red pickup truck and drove across Tennessee, taking his conservative message directly to the voters. Now he is traveling across Iowa, showing why he is the true conservative in the race. We have brought back the spirit of the red pickup to work its magic again. Click on the red pickup truck to help keep Fred's tank full till Iowa caucus day.

Unfortunately, I am on dial-up right now and couldn’t get Fred’s site to load. What’s the total up to? I sent him a hundred bucks today.

Here’s a copy of an e-mail I got earlier, don’t know how the paste will work, but here goes.

Dear Carl,

I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know that we’ve more than exceeded our goal of $248,846, and raised over $266,000. We issued a bold challenge, and you responded in kind. Our new ad ‘Substance,’ which began running today, will stay on the air in Iowa statewide through the Caucus on January 3rd. Thank you very much to everyone who contributed. It means a lot to Fred while he’s in Iowa campaigning hard.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to watch the new ad yet, you can view it here.

Thanks for everything you’re doing for the campaign,

Bill

William B. Lacy
Campaign Manager

I live in Tenneeesee, home of the famous red pickup.

I voted for Fred twice. The second time a clothes pin on my nose. I still have plenty and if it comes down to it in the general, I will get those pins out and use them again. I hate to continually have to vote the lesser of the evils.

kjam22,

When will Fox have a link up with the video?

I would like to hear it as all comments in it's entirety and in context, nothing against you KJM.

Anyone know how good is Bauer as a prognosticator?

I understand. I don’t if or when they’ll post it. Bauer and someone else (female) I didn’t know were taking the two minute question thing from the hosts. Bauer said Hillary will win the dems nomination because she has the machine to last state after state during the process. Said he picked the “dark horse” Thompson to be the republican Nominee. The female picked Huckabee.

I can envision Fred taking support from Huck as people begin to see the cracks in Huck’s Armor.

Gosh I hope so. I can’t get too hyped up supporting Mitt, Rudy, or McCain. I would vote most likely but I won’t be there with a smile or wearing bells so to speak.

Go FRed Go!

If you heat up that cold water from the creek and throw some soap in, you probably could avoid the pins.

I’m hoping Hunter beats Fred in Iowa. I know that will be greeted by a series of LOLs, but it needs to go on record. When Fred was in the lead, if someone had suggested that he’d drop in the polls and lose 30 points at Intrade, it would have been greeted by the same set of LOLs. And yet, it happened. It’s an indicator that Fred isn’t a good campaigner, and it’s time to support the other conservative in the race, Hunter. Hunter is more conservative than Fred, and he’s an evangelical, so the disappointed Hucksters will feel comfortable voting for him.

.

.

.

.

According to Intrade, the winner of the December 12th GOP debate was... Duncan Hunter.

FNC just asked an Iowa voter if the assasination of Bhutto has affected her vote. She said "it just shows that we have to get the troops home now and stop the terrorism"!

I live in bizarro world.
