Boys' learning 'helped by toy guns'

31 December 2007 Boys' learning is aided by playing with toy weapons and should not be discouraged at nursery schools, the government has claimed.

In new guidance on the issue of boys' education, the government has claimed that development in boys is improved when they are allowed to play and act out their games.

The guidance says that staff should resist the 'natural instinct' to stop boys from playing with weapons, although this has been criticised by a number of groups, which have claimed that toy guns and weapons are a symbol of aggression.

'[Stopping play] is not necessary as long as practitioners help the boys to understand and respect the rights of other children and to take responsibility for the resources and environment,' the report says.

Beyond this, the guidance says that staff must teach children to respect each other and that harming people is not acceptable behaviour, children's minister Beverly Hughes told the BBC.

‘natural instinct’

This reminds me of a humorous speech given by an elementary school teacher where he talked about little boy on the play ground who was pretending he was the machine gun and his _____ was the barrel.

Can’t help but wonder how much money was spent to figure out what is common sense to some of us.

They spent money to figure out that boys should not be discouraged from playing with guns/toy weapons. That is something I already knew.

You misread something. or didn't read at all.

Boys are built that way I think. We played army in grade school recess and when I was home our favorite game was-—army. One of the guys even dug some tunnels and foxholes. Guess we’re lucky the tunnels didn’t collapse on us. Maybe the Brits are showing a little common sense?
