Posted on 01/01/2008 12:22:43 PM PST by STARWISE
Claim: An Islamic bank is the majority owner of the Caribou Coffee chain.
Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2002]
As you will see from the links below, Caribou Coffee is owned 87.8% by the First Islamic Investment Bank which, among other things has the following philosophy: "Above all, ensuring that all activities conform to Islamic Shari'ah" The chairman of their Shari'ah supervisory board is:
Dr. Yusuf Abdullah Al-Qaradawi Chairman, Seerah & Sunnah Center, Qatar University; Professor, Faculty of Shari'ah, Qatar University.
As you will see from the links below he is also on the supervisory board of "Union for Good," which is a charitable organization to support Palestinians. Nothing wrong with a charity to help Palestinians, but here is a quote from the Union for Good web site:
"The Al-Aqsa Intifada is the latest of a long line of affliction faced by the people of Palestine. Its ancestry dates back to the massacre of innocent men, women and children in villages such as Deir Yaseen and the illegal occupation of Palestine in 1948."

Not for me ..
From Caribou Coffee’s Web site:
“Arcapita, whose investors are located primarily in the Middle East , makes its investments in a manner consistent with the body of Islamic principles known as Shariah. Consequently, we operate our business in a manner consistent with Shariah principles and will continue to do so as long as Arcapita is a significant shareholder.”
“In particular, we must comply with Shariah principles regarding money that we borrow from other parties. For example, our lease financing arrangement, under which we have obtained financing to fund our operations and expand our business, is structured in a manner that complies with Shariah principles. The structure of this lease financing arrangement is described in the prospectus relating to our initial public offering. Also, a Shariah-compliant company is prohibited from dealing in the areas of alcohol, gambling, pornography, pork and pork-related products.”
Other Arcapita investments:
Church’s Chicken, too? Jeeeeze
Thanks for the link.
None of this coffee for Savage
That’s OK,... we’re a Folger’s Family.
Another of the islamic fund’s companies is Yakima, the maker of ski racks and such.
Thule for me!
Arcapita is the major backer of Cirrus Design, an aircraft manufacturer that is very prominent now.
It's less than thrilling to find out that an Islamist fund is behind them.
Thanks for the heads-up.
It's THEIR STUFF.
If you are disturbed with Arabian involvement in the coffee industry you should probably turn to tea. I understand that all those folks are Buddhists and Hindus (except in Indonesia where they are Moslems).
BTW, no doubt the thread is really about the disreputable nature of the folks owning and marketing coffee through that company. There are others out there. Easy to switch.
I've never had Caribou coffee (had never even heard of it.)
So now, I just won't.
Thanks for the link...interesting line-up
Meridian Surgical Partners, LLC is an ambulatory surgery center company developing multiple centers in key US markets.
and check out that management team ...
Yep, the Church’s name comes from a family, not “church” and yet it was bought out in recent years and specifically structured in keeping with Islam.
I wonder at what point such businesses become discriminatory when on sites like Ask The Imam, the Imam will tell muslims that the safest way to make sure that meats/foods are halal is to buy them only from muslims.
I don’t drink coffee, but if I did, I wouldn’t drink muzzie or moonbat Seattle varieties.
I prefer drinking Caribou Coffee over Starbucks.
What happens if you drink it while eating fried pork rinds?
I’ll stick to Folgers.
Your head explodes
I’ve known this and mentioned it on several threads for years.
Too bad as the coffee is good, better than Starbucks.
Many, can I say most??, banks at the international level, such as HSBC, have entire divisions devoted to Islamic banking. (One major issue is that money is not to be lent in order to earn interest. There's a whole procedure involved with the bank buying the property first, then calculating what to have the customer pay for it on non-interest installments.) I can't access the link right now, but Harvard has an Islamic Studies Center, with a huge on-line library of Islamic banking info.
Further, the Nestle's company has a unit responsible for compliance with halal food laws--to be able to market items in Indonesia, the world's largest Islamic nation.
Oh really? Then I guess they should come up with their own types of antibiotics and foreign aid because that’s OUR STUFF. Do I really need to go into nuclear weapons at this point? Excuse me and millions of other Americans if we take one of the few contributions of that uncivilized piece of the world and make practical use of it. After all, if we didn’t get up and go to work, they would probably die of starvation. Who else will feed them?
Very interesting link .. thank you.
I found TONS in my zip code. I also saw the Pakistani
restaurant listed that’s a few blocks from me.
Every single day around 12:30-1pm when I happen to
go by in a cab, it’s shocking to see the number of
cabs there. There must be about 100 cabs parked along
both sides of the street and filling this restaurant’s
When I’ve asked the cabbie what’s going on there, I was
told they go there for lunch and prayers. My tin foil
paranoia says: what a great place to gather for getting
info and directives.
I’ve thought about calling the FBI, but it’s so obvious
and regular, I’m sure they must know about it.
I bypass Starbucks .. it all tastes like burnt coffee to me. No appeal whatsoever.
I believe this is a fraud. Neither the Caribou Coffee website or the Arcapita website contain these pages. I don’t think that you want to trust this source; it looks like they have linked to bogus website pages.
Good coffee, good service and why fret about the ownership.
The Arabs have money and they are going to buy something.
In the meantime, they are majority owners of a business that can function both in Christendom and Islam without breaking anyone’s religious taboos.
I am also skeptical. If the majority holder of Caribou espouses Sharia law, it is in direct conflict with having young women with brightly colored hair and nose rings working at the place.
Cloven hoofed animals....
“It’s THEIR STUFF.”
Not so. Originally coffee came from India by way of Mocha (presently a little village on the south coast of Yemen) and was then transported by caravan to the Mediterranean. Even today many talk about mocha when they refer to coffee.
Looks true to me.
“Who owns Caribou Coffee? Is Caribou Coffee publicly traded?
Caribou Coffee Company became public company with an initial public offering on September 29, 2005. Our stock trades on the NASDAQ National market under the symbol CBOU. Our majority shareholder since 2000 is an affiliate of Arcapita Bank B.S.C.(c).”
They gotta do something with all that money we send them for oil. Would we be happier if they invested it in China?
Not sure on this......just asking for opinions........??
They certainly observe it as to pigs!
Whether or not Arabs are lazy, shiftless, nogood, or simply corrupt and stupid, they appear to have stumbled on coffee bushes and decided they could be improved.
You do realize that civilization was first invented in the Middle East along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The people who did it are called Sumerians. They also invented writing. Their language may have Dravidian (South Indian) roots but its closest relatives in modern times are the 11 Sa'ami (Laplander) languages.
I suspect coffee was discovered by folks with more than their fair share of Sa'ami genes eh!
Yes, but it does not say anything about Sharia law, etc. I still believe that the snopes link is a hoax.
Or, vice versa. I referred to improvement in the cultivar, which they did. The original coffee bean bush may have come from Java for all that matters.
It is a small, family run outfit and they roast the beans daily. The quality is excellent and the service is top notch.
Good to know. Thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for the post. A local store is selling that brand among others, and I’d have made the purchase when I run out.
From France? Don’t know what gave you that idea. You however, are an enigma. You seem to pop up and defend anyone that is not of Anglo American origin, almost on que. Whether it’s Indian tiger baiters (red dot, not tomahawk) or Arabic coffee bush stumblers, you’re always there. What’s up with that?
Not concerned at all. Arabs were the first folks in the world to successfully improve the wild breeds of coffee and make them palatable. Its THEIR STUFF.
Excuse me, but coffee was originally discovered in Ethiopia when a herder saw the animals responding to eating the beans of the coffee plant. So it does not belong to the Arabs, since they were not the discovers. I am sure Ethiopians want proper compensation for unpaid utilization of their country's plant genome stock.
US Congress is Owned 37.8% by the First Islamic Investment Bank
The Coffea plant is native to subtropical Africa and southern Asia in any case, so the only dispute is about who first used it the way we do ~ in Coca Cola, and that was in Atlanta wasn't it?
This jumping animal story is just a folktale.
Arabs are hip to saving the planet.
My wife once did some business with a company that was making an eco friendly toilet paper out of cotton. ( Don’t ask me to explain how all that saved the planet ). Anyway the company was fully funded by middle eastern investors.
