Two days before the Iowa caucuses day 15 of his 17-day "hands down" bus tour former senator Fred Thompson's campaign bus stood motionless in the snowy parking lot of a West Des Moines motel, across from a movie theater and a suburban strip mall.
Thompson's campaign scheduled only one event for New Year's Day, a meet-and-greet at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, about an hour outside Des Moines. Thompson, R-Tenn., shunned the bus, emblazoned with his picture, for the relative comfort of a black Chevrolet Suburban.
(snip)
Thompson has staked his campaign's prospects to Iowa. In seeking to jump-start his campaign last month, he promised to crisscross the Hawkeye State with visits to 50 cities and towns in 17 days aboard his new campaign bus.

Did somebody bother to tell Hunter that the race started?
I seriously doubt that. Just saw him on Fox News — he basically told the press to f-off if they don’t like how he is handling his campaign.
No bias in THAT headline! No wonder pissant chose it.
He says he needs to finish #2, FWIW
You know, this is another reason why you can’t get started late in the primary season: by December in IA and NH, it can be near impossible to even get around, so your campaigning has to be “in the can” by then.
Hope he traded in his gucci loafers for some snow boots.
Pack for a long wait....
Thompson didn’t start late -— the rest of the pack started WAAAAAAAAY too early.
Marshalltown was the 45th event, and the campaign is on target to hit 50 by caucus day...
I’m glad to see you and ABC have the same opinions.
How does bashing Thompson help Hunter? It only helps Romney, McPain and the Huckster.
In military-industrial circles, former House Armed Services Committee chairman (and long-shot Presidential candidate) Duncan Hunter is well-known as a guy who makes damn sure that his pet projects get healthy heaps of federal bucks -- whether the Pentagon wants 'em, nor not. Some of these efforts are pretty cool, like the tricked-out, ultra-fast catamaran that the Navy is now using for humanitarian and counter-narcotics missions. Others are considerably, um, less impressive.
Take the DP-2 -- an experimental, vertical take-off aircraft that "Congress has spent more than $63 million on... [but] has never flown more than a few feet," ABC News reports, online and in hilarious video.
I assume the faster Fred drops out, the faster his conservative supporters will back the other conservative in the race, like they should have from day one.
LOL. That’s funny.
“Yah think” this is a taaaaaad biased in headlines?
I don’t think ANY candidate is “stumbling” to the finish line.
Peniless to the finish line perhaps.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to endorse this kind of ‘reporting’. The bias oozes out of every line.
To read this piece as you have done, and then to reflect upon it with apparent satisfaction - you’re not doing your guy any favours.
Now you done did it! Fredheads will demand you bow down to their idol.
Mitt Romney 30% Mike Huckabee 28% John McCain 16% Fred Thompson 13% Rudy Giuliani 4% Ron Paul 4% Duncan Hunter 1% Undecided 4%

Exactly. And the idea anyone’s campaign hopes should hing on the returns from Iowa or New Hampshire, is just plain nuts.
For the record, we’re talking about somethink like 0.0015% of the potential voters in November 2008, making or breaking someone. What nonsense...
I wish you were right, but the Christian conservatives will go to the Huckster; the fiscal conservatives will go to Mitt. Some will go to McCain because, well, they don’t know any better.
I think Duncan is fantastic. However, as much as I like to B & M, I don’t want to be complaining about having Mitt or Rudy as a nominee.
Un huh. I hear he is under investigation by the FBI too. A Freeper told me.
You are a great poster. I disagree but hey, it’s all good
Go ahead, hold your breath.
Which is a shame. I'd have loved to see Hunter do well in the race.
Nice to see somethings don’t change with the new year.
Good to see you a man of your convictions and that you
keep chosing to bash Fred instead of going positive on
your candidate.
I am beginning to think that you are Fred obsessed...
yawns.
Interesting,
It seems the candidate with the fewer supporters and even less cash would be the one to drop out.
The reality is that kook paul has more money in the bank than hunter.
The reality is while MSM is proping up McCain again with free airtime, hunter is not even registering in the polls.
LOL! Now that is a good retort.
Wow, relishing an investigation of Duncan Hunter...
Did Jim sell the forum to DU or MoveOn dot org, or are you folks just on the wrong forum?
Look, if o.wd doesn't vote for Hunter, then s/he is a baby-killing Communist who just doesn't love America! A Freeper told me that, too.
Stumbles ?
You don’t like Fred Thompson either?
I loved it! Especially the part about there being more important differences between himself and another (Democratic) opponent than their campaign schedules.
There’s that, too.
Other than a few comments here and there I avoided the vast majority of ‘08 race threads throughoutout ‘07. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been paying attention, it’s just that I felt it was far to early.
Heck the prognositicating for ‘08 started the morning after Election Day ‘04 here on FR.
It’s now ‘08, now I’ll start participating a bit more.
hahahahahaha................Man, you are way off if you consider the other candidates to be conservative!!!!!!!!!
Fred is THE ONLY CONSERVATIVE. Thats why he campaigns within his budget.
If your other so called “conservatives” lead by example, they will tax us and spend like a drunken demoRat.
A good package like Fred don’t need to spend millions of dollars “convincing people” how badly he wants the job.
Man..............your idea of what is conservative is wayyyyyyyy off!!
Nope. Just a durn fool.
I like Fred and will vote for him if he’s the nominee, just that I’m not going to worship him like most FReepers do.
Thanks. I’m still wondering why you folks seem to go negative on folks like Thompson and Hunter. They’re the two we need the most.
Yup!!!!
Even my husband was cheering at him him on the TV!!!!
Fred didn’t spend enough money on tv commercials for them to be excited.
The media won’t promote the ones who don’t advertise heavily. Advertising is not free. So they will ignore anyone not lining their pockets.
Oh, c'mon now. Duncan Hunter would campaign within his budget too - if he had funds to budget.
If Fred pulls it out, he will be one of the few I’d vote for without having to go to confession the next morning. Right now, he is sucking oxygen from Hunter, so he should drop out.
I agree. That’s been my take as well. People don’t really start paying attention until about a month before elections. Any polls run before that are basically irrelevent. Even then, they are generally skewed toward the leftists. You have to be very careful about what you buy into early on. And that’s why I also avoid shopping early.
Here is a link to another thread of a more conservative analysis of Fred's Iowa retail politics from Human Events: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1947169/posts
Spot On....Which is why the MSM is so anxious to do everything in their power to kill his campaign.
Another attempt to shape the course of human events from a Liberal Weenie Headline Writer.
