Peggy Noonan: Out With the Old, In With the New
The Wall Street Journal ^ | January 4, 2008 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 01/04/2008 2:02:44 AM PST by Aristotelian

Obama and Huckabee rise; Mrs. Clinton falls.

And so it begins.

We wanted exciting, we got exciting.

As this is written, late on the night of the caucuses, the outlines of the decisions seem clear: Barack Obama won.

Hillary Clinton, the inevitable, the avatar of the machine, lost.

It's huge. Even though people have been talking about this possibility for six weeks now, it's still huge. She had the money, she had the organization, the party's stars, she had Elvis behind her, and the Clinton name in a base that loved Bill. And she lost. There are always a lot of reasons for a loss, but the Ur reason in this case, the thing it all comes down to? There's something about her that makes you look, watch, think, look again, weigh and say: No.

She started out way ahead, met everyone, and lost.

As for Sen. Obama, his victory is similarly huge. He won the five biggest counties in Iowa, from the center of the state to the South Dakota border. He carried the young in a tidal wave. He outpolled Mrs. Clinton among women.

He did it with a classy campaign, an unruffled manner, and an appeal on the stump that said every day, through the lines: Look at who I am and see me, the change that you desire is right here, move on with me and we will bring it forward together.

Hillary's joint message -- of experience and of change -- is internally conflicted. Does one vote for her secure in the knowledge that she's up to the job? Or does one vote for her because she's new and will change things?

She really can't have it both ways, though she's trying. In the end, it make her look like the opportunist that she is.

Noonan offers a keen insight on Huckabee’s popularity: “From the mail I have received the past month after criticizing him in this space, I would say his great power, the thing really pushing his supporters, is that they believe that what ails America and threatens its continued existence is not economic collapse or jihad, it is our culture.”

No, not slow Internet connection. I searched first, found nothing. Then, in the time it took me to format the piece, it got posted. No way of seeing that coming.

Mike Huckabee is Pat Buchanan in sheep’s clothes. Same social positions, same economic populism, same trade protectionism, same global isolationism, same religious bigotry — the only difference is Huckabee hates Mormons rather than Jews. The only difference besides outward demeanor between these two is Buchanan is anti-immigrant and Huckabee is pro-amnesty.

Neither does Ms. Noonan....from the article:
My sense is that Mr. Huckabee's good supporters deserve a better leader.

His next problem may be not so much New Hampshire as Ed Rollins, the Reagan White House political aide who came in a week ago to manage his campaign. Mr. Rollins began his tenure announcing to respectful young reporters that he--"the grizzled veteran," the "old battler"--would like to sink to his knees and "shoot Romney in the groin" and "punch his teeth out." Such class is of course always welcome on the trail, but one senses the verbal ante will constantly be upped, and I'm not sure that will work well for Mr. Huckabee. Self inflated dirigibles, especially unmoored ones, can cast shadows on parades.

From the original article...

...while the presidency, as an office, can actually make real changes in the areas of economic and foreign policy, the federal government has a limited ability to change the culture of America. That is something conservatives used to know.

Absolutely correct, Peggy. A fact which most social conservatives here on FR have forgotten. They will come to regret it.

Next to Mississippi,South Carolina has the largest,as a percentage, black population of any state or commonwealth. And without the monolithic racially paranoid vote of American African Americans (PC plus),any Dem is dead in November.
Obama must be destroyed before the SC primary or Hillary is finished.
Look for Clinton Inc.to make Obama appear whiter than really old dog poop to blacks and then replay this race card to get ignorant SC caucasions to vote against him as blacker than coal at night.
In other words,in SC,dumb whites will be reminded Barrack is black while dumb blacks will be told he is not.
I know, the tactic is sick and wrong but we are talking about the Clintons here.

True,a certain one term Huck presidency may influence American culture if a SCOTUS judge croaks and if a Dem senate lets him appoint an originalist replacement—which is highly doubtful unless he gives them more socialist power in trade—and he would.

“My sense is that Mr. Huckabee’s good supporters deserve a better leader.”

That is a great summation sentence, but still a understatement. Liberal Christianity does as much to undermine our Traditional Nation as does Islam, Leftism, etc.

Obama (before his speech) was introduced last night as the next first family
I am so scared that this man will be our next president.
The country wants change but what do we know about this guy. He needs some difficult questioning in the next few months. Up till now- he always seems to avoid!

Obama has not been scrutinized yet, but he is truly the biggest lightweight in the modern era to be in this position. He has made some outrageous statements in this campaign. The GOP needs an experienced leader and campaigner to squash him if Hillary does not rebound.

There is a strange aura in politics. Basically, both of the outcomes last night were ‘none of the above’. People are disgusted by politics, politicians, negative campaigning, high gas prices, uncertainty, etc. This White House has done many good things but their complete lack of a communication strategy for the past 4-5 years has led to this moment. It really is sad. Their tax policy has led to a tremendous economic growth period. Their foreign policy and 9/11 response has led to two of the most decisive military victories in our history, but yet we sit here with a populous that thinks the economy has been reeling for eight years and foreign policy is incorrect.

Maybe Hillary should have Barack's mother campaigning with her, instead of her own. Naw - probably too subtle for the Clintons.

There are a lot of folks concerned about the culture. Liberal social issue folks want the government to work for them (Huckabee). Conservative social issue folks want government out of our lives.

People forget that someone can be ‘conservative’ on social issues and not be a conservative at all.

Liberal Christianity is a contradiction of terms.I would,in all modesty, say God does not endorse the ideological editing of The Word.Conservatives aren’t perfect in their many interpretations of Christ but at least they orbit around traditional belief and, unlike liberals, endeaver to actually live The Word.
Liberals, even so-called liberal “Christians” have removed the stigma of sin and we must either correct or live with the results.

Exactly.

Additionally, I would argue that the whole Teen-Dream of Barry The African Mulatto (BAM) is to do the exact opposite.

I remain amazed at the pro-lifers here on FR who seem to think that if they can just elect the right President, he will on inauguration day personally fire up a D-5 Cat and level every abortion clinic in America.

They are as deluded in their own way as are the moonbats.

I started seeing this in discussions of abortion back during the "Rudybot wars" when everyone who did not toe the party line on gay rights and abortion was getting banned from FR en masse, and still see it from time to time.

Basically the idea is that overturning Roe is not nearly enough, because states can't be trusted to have their own abortion laws.

Therefore what's called for is a SCOTUS decision that uses the Fourteenth Amendment "...nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property..." to simply ban abortions nationwide.

When I have tried to explain that this would be every bit as divisive as Roe and would NEVER make the abortion issue go away, and that furthermore no conceivable court majority would ever go so far, it was seriously suggested to me by more than one Freeper that it could be done by executive order. Which would in that fantasy world be the effective equivalent of having the Preaident personally tear down the clinics.
