GREENSBORO Don't be alarmed if you see sharpshooters poised on rooftops at UNCG on Monday.
In the shadow of last April's attack at Virginia Tech, UNCG will host an exercise that will simulate a gunman attacking the campus.
Hundreds of local law enforcement and public safety officials, university employees and volunteers from the community will participate in the training, which will test the university's ability to respond to this type of emergency.
"There are a lot of systems that we want to practice so we know how to do the right things," said Bruce Griffin, assistant vice chancellor for environmental safety at UNCG.
The north part of the campus will be cordoned off during the exercise, which will last from about 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
UNCG officials began planning the exercise in 2006 after an inmate escaped from custody and killed two people before being caught near Virginia Tech.
The shooting rampage that left 33 people dead on the same campus last year only reinforced the need for this kind of effort, said Maj. James Herring, assistant chief of police for the UNCG Police Department.
The university has done tabletop exercises in which leaders talk through what might happen in such a situation.
This time, the gunman will be a real person and the police will respond the way they are trained even though the scenario will be an act. Students and residents have volunteered to help in the effort.
"We'll have bad guys and we'll have victims," Herring said. "We'll do it so it tests several levels of law enforcement response."
The UNCG police, Greensboro Police Department and Guilford County Sheriff's Office and other first responders will participate in the exercise, which will test how the agencies work together, Herring said.
The exercise also will be a chance for university employees to try out their emergency roles.
For instance, volunteers have been tapped to play parents who want information about students. University employees will staff phone lines and set up Web sites and emergency radio transmissions to keep the campus community informed.
Representatives from colleges and universities across the county have been invited to watch the exercise, Griffin said.
"It is really meant to be a learning experience for a lot of people," Griffin said.
How about a simulation where the college’s administration actually recognizes the warning signs of a potential violent act by one of it’s students?
Will there be video of this??????? I had the idea that if somebody could make a good video of this, then present it to Congress, showing the fallacy of college gun-free zones.
And malls
And churches
And high schools
It will be on the local news websites the evening after it happens. I’ll link to it.
Here's an idea: put some volunteers out there with concealed weapons. Those with concealed weapons don't know who the perp is and vice verse. Let's see how long it takes for an armed citizen to put an end to the assault.
Wanna lay odds that the “perp” will be a crazed white-supremacist Christian?
You are a kind person.

“Let’s see how long it takes for an armed citizen to put an end to the assault.”
On the UNCG campus that might take a while. It’s moonbat/gay city over there.
What is a “gun attack”?
Is that like an SUV rampage?

Sharpshooter good, sniper bad. Armed police officers on campus good, armed citizens on campus bad. Sheeple reliant on government saviors good, self-reliance and self-empowerment bad.
I consider a sharpshooter to be somebody more than averagely proficient with an automatic weapon, ie. an M-16. I consider a sniper to be somebody using a dedicated sniper rifle, such as a bolt-action.
Save a lot of bucks, save a lot of lives, save a lot of training. Arm the students! Problem solved.
A homeschooler.
Now that would be funny. If I were a “volunteer”, I might pack a paintball gun or squirtgun filled with ink. Then, when the Sudden Jihad Moment breaks, I’d issue a mighty battle cry* and ink the perp in the heart (twice, then ink him in the head).
Then what would the rest of the simulation be? Probably just put on hold until they wipe the ink off, then they’d continue after I was hauled off in ‘cuffs, and MSM would rewind the tape so nobody would know.
*You (deleted), you killed Kenny!
This should keep the drama students busy.

SWEET thank you, I’ll watch that when I have sound at home.
(Which won’t be long)
