Why do we give so much value to what a state with one percent of the population thinks?

The absurdity of this is illustrated by cartoons that can be found at Daryl Cagle's Professional Cartoonists Index.

The site does not allow free hotlinking, however here are some links to a few of the good cartoons:

Daryl Cagle

Brian Fairrington

Nate Beeler

Pat Bagley

There are more good cartoons here.

Slow news year..
and the news in the WOT/IRAQ is upbeat so we can't report that.
Despite all attempts to wreck it, the economy is still good, so we can't report that...
so, that leaves Iowa.

The theme of the cartoons are the same:
“Iowa doesn’t really count.”

But, Hillary came in 3rd,
so I like the way Iowa thinks!

May the rest of the states have the
courage to FOLLOW THE LEADER!

STOP HILLARY!!!

Another reasons why newspapers are shrinking: dull unimaginative cartoons.

I’ll trust the ‘dumb farmer’ over the ‘elitist intellectual’ anyday.

The primary season is a process. Iowa just happens to be first.

It should be drawn out so there is a filtering that takes place.

If all were on one day, we’d have a regular danger of an 8-way division of delegates, a brokered convention, and elite-chosen nominees.

Iowa means NOTHING compared to Super Tuesday.

In projected delegates based on state-by-state polling, the lead is now:

Giuliani ~1100
Huckabee ~500
Romney ~200
Thompson ~150
McCain ~80

Why do news organizations give so much value to polls with even fewer people?

What’s wrong with having a brokered convention?

It’s the only time those stinking politicians must face a voter in person before they return to their elite Secret Service world.

Why wouldn’t we make them suffer through it?

It’s a good thing.

Iowa is the equivalent of an NFL Pre-Season game.

I liked the one I saw on Today’s Toons the other day;
(farmer): “usually we’re the ones who spead a lot
of manure around”. Some on that site were similar.

Knock knock. Who’s there?
Iowa.
Iowa who?
Iowa lot of tax money to the government thanks to the liberals.

Why do news organizations give so much value to polls with even fewer people?

Polls or Surveys are supposed to be "samplings". Business uses them all the time to assess changes.

Iowa is NOT a "sampling" of the USA.

Bush 41 came in third.

Reagan was 2nd.

Bubba got single digits in Iowa.

So much for Iowa.

God I hate the MSM.

Elitism

Better to settle it with voters than to leave it as a toss-up.

Probably.

Although, the media attention is worth its weight in gold.

Why do we give so much value to what a state with one percent of the population thinks?

Because News is a Construct.

It is created by distributors (tv news, newspapers, etc.).

It is whatever the businesses say it is.

What Iowa thinks only matters if Hillary comes in first. In which case, Iowa would be praised by the media for it’s Middle America sensibility.

A 3rd place finish for her in Iowa brings a deluge of insults about Iowa from her goosestepping media supporters.

I wouldn’t exactly call a state full of people with their hands out for farm subsidies “smarter” or “better.” (Although Maryland ain’t exactly full of Einsteins either.)

Oh, all right, I apologize for being so harsh. Iowa and Maryland would be much better places if all the people with their hands out would move to Europe. No intention to insult all the fine, upstanding Iowans and Marylanders who work hard, pay taxes, and ask for little in return. :-)

There are plenty of problems with the people holding out their hands for subsidies, but I’m not sure that intelligence is one of them. If someone wants to give you money, hey, why not?

But I agree that ethanol is a scam. We’re burning poor people’s food...in fact I think that’s going to be my new tagline for awhile.

“We’re first because we’re smarter and better than anyone else :)”

while that may be true, the reason IOWA is important, is because it is FIRST.

They get the chance to set a trend, to influence the other 49 state caucuses.

Whether other caucus members in other states do follow their trend, is another story.

Someone has to go FIRST, and what the heck.... IOWA is fine with me.

In a purely altruistic climate, the smaller states would draw straws to see who goes first, but POLITICIANS have found it an ‘aid’ in ‘cheating’ to control who goes first.

The DEMS also use a different method to select a nominee than the REPUBLICANS.

I don’t think I have to explain why.

You’ve got to start someplace. Why not Iowa? America’s heartland is a good place to start I would think.

The New Hampshire hoopla is the one that I don’t like. Important to the MSM, but the northeast is zero in importance they way I see it.

I’ve heard, somewhere, that the corn used for ethanol production is feed corn for livestock, rather than corn for us humans. (So, if that’s the case, why has corn for tortillas in Meeheeco gotten so damn expensive?)

There are only so many acres to grow crops. If you plant corn for ethanol, that takes up land that could grow corn for people or livestock, or for soybeans or another crop. It all comes from the same limited amount of land. And that's why beef and milk are more expensive now too.
