Mikey's hero (good sports story)

He's played all but 20 snaps for a team competing for a national championship, but on the night he proved how much he truly means to his school, LSU's 317-pound left tackle wasn't on the football field.

--snip-- I am the left tackle for the LSU Tigers football team. I'm also number 70 and I saw you wearing that jersey number, that's a great number by the way :). You know some people see us as heroes because of how we play but the truth is people like yourself are the real heroes. I see all the small problems I face are nothing compared to the hardships that you may go through. God has a plan for all of us and for some reason he put it on my heart to write you tonight. If it is at all possible I would love to talk to you. My number is ***-**** anytime, day or night, if you need someone to talk to. Hang in there buddy and just know that anything is possible through Christ

Now you have done gone and done it......made me realize that not all college kids/athletes are first class jerks, and that some of them are actually pretty damn fine folks!

I hope he is well enough to watch his team win it all.

Thank you for the ping. Yes, that is a wonderful story and it has gotten a good bit of coverage locally this week. I'm happy to see that it is getting attention nationally, too. Ciron Black is a good guy, everyone likes him.

This Link is to another very touching story about another little LSU fan. The article has an accompanying video clip link just above the photo. The little boy featured in this one is adorable and will steal your heart.

Aside from making a little guy very happy, there is another positive aspect to this story because it shows some growth and a bit of humility on the part of LSU's gifted but immature back up quarterback, Ryan Perrilloux. Perrilloux has been in Coach Miles doghouse all season for one bad decision after another. It appears Perrilloux may have learned something about what it means to be a big time athlete in a big time program. He was quoted as saying that little ones like Eli make him aware that young kids lookup to athletes and the responsibility of being a positive role model. His remarks seemed genuine.

The important aspect of the story is not the football game...

You Mikey may not be alive for Chiron Black's senior year...

Chiron Black may attend Mikey's funeral -- if Mikey's condition worsens...

When I was in college, I was able to do something for a child who had Leukemia, but he later died...

Tonight, TV will show this as something important -- a really important event in our culture -- a football game...

But what is really important? There are many children at Saint Jude that face hopeless situations (which is why they are at Saint Jude)...

Saint Jude is known as the saint of hopeless cases...
