(CBS) The former Democratic nominee for president who ran against a president later driven from office under threat of impeachment, today said that impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney is "the rightful course for an American patriot."
George McGovern, a former South Dakota Senator who ran on the Democratic ticket in 1972 as an anti-war advocate, wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post that, while he steered clear of calling for the impeachment of Richard Nixon in the '70s - fearing it would appear as "an expression of personal vengeance" against his opponent who won re-election in a landslide - McGovern said after seven years of the current administration, he has "belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment" of the president and the vice president.
McGovern also called the case for impeaching Mr. Bush and Cheney "far stronger" than what was the case against President Nixon and Vice President Spiro T. Agnew after the 1972 election.
McGovern admits that while there is little bipartisan support for instituting impeachment hearings (House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, has announced that impeachment is "off the table"), he said, "Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses.
"They have repeatedly violated the Constitution.

Alzheimer's is a terrible disease...
As I said on the previous thread...
MCgovern: “Of course, there seems to be little bipartisan support for impeachment.”
A sitting President was caught lying under oath in a workplace sexual harassment lawsuit — one where he was the accused executive level predator and the victim was a hapless low level employee.
Seems that “bi-partisan” support for an impeachment would be a snap.
But where were all the democrat hack Congressmen (and women) who pilloried Clarence Thomas based upon spurious allegations from a person whose sanity had been questioned?
They were NOT willing to step up to impeach OR convict.
Mr. McGovern, those of us who are old enough remember your anti-American record from way back. Now sit down and shut up.
He is a clown...all he needs is the funny hair and the big nose...oooopps he already has the nose...
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
old liberals just keep getting dumber
Another let’s get even for the Clinton impeachment.
There is already a thread and it also is of little interest.
McGovern was a treasonous nitwit back in 1972, nothing has changed today. Wasn’t his daughter one of Slick’s distracions and one that really PO’d Monica Lewinsky?
This is the Washington Post editors’ idea of meaningful commentary in an election year! Thoughtful and insightful!
How do they manage to feed and clothe themselves, and get from point A to point B with their heads to far up their nether parts? And I am supposed to take their rag seriously, as a “newspaper of record.”
McGovern is having one of his spells, where he thinks he’s somebody.
McGovern is an old socialst fool.
McGovern is still alive?
Isn’t Jefferson’s trial this month?
Sorry. I searched, but found nothing.
You are thinking of Eleanor Mondale, Fritz’s daughter.
No... Eleanor Mondale
Didn’t you vote for McGovern in your younger years?
McGovern agreeing with Jimmy Carter? I’m shocked!
Well this is certainly in character for McGovern. Belated, parroted, and irrelevant.
IF I had thought of this guy, I would have thought he was dead!
I think the country already made it known, 25 years ago, what they think of you George.
Now shut up and sit down
Probably not...I don't think anybody did.
The dhimmicrats have demonstrated such a commanding knowledge of the constitution....NOT! We really should be worried about the fact that both the dhimmicrats and the repulsicans both present to us “leaders” who are - by any means of measure - of even lower intellect than journalists.
I don't suppose McGovern said exactly what these supposed Constitutional violations were?
Very possible. Titles completely different. The other one is scrolling by now too.
I was 15 when McGovern ran.
I did vote for Carter in 1976.
a decision whose fruit borne kickstarted my transformation
And people used to make fun of Pravda.
Pauline Kael of the New Yorker once famously said that she found it incredible that Nixon beat McGovern because “nobody I know voted for Nixon.” McGovern actually won Manhattan, one of the few large precincts he won. Even Cook County (Chicago) Illinois voted for Nixon, and they didn’t even vote for Reagan.
I did, Then I voted for Carter... Ahhh to be young, drunk, and stupid again...
Impeach the ‘Rats and RINOs in Congress.
I was 16 when Clinton ran the first time, and would have voted for him back then were I eligible. I sort of came to my senses four years later and voted for Harry Browne.
GET A LIFE
McGovern reminds me of a song...STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.....Irrelevant since 1970 too....
I thought he would have been dead by now,but no-he’s still spitting bile as ever..
This article mentions that McGovern was an "anti-war" candidate. Let's not forget whos war this actually was. Many people seem to forget that it was the dems, under Kennedy, who got us into Viet Nam, and it was the dems, under Johnson, who escalated it, ensuring a long and bloody engagement. Only after the republicans got in did the dem establishment get "serious" about getting us out of the war. As usual, the dems got us into the mess, and the it was up to the republicans to extricate us from the dem's mess. All the while, the dems were doing all they could to make it more difficult for the republicans. To the point where the leader of the enemy's military practically thanks the media, and one senator from MA in particular, for helping them to win the war.
Their rationale of the left is obvious. The believe that impeachment hearings during the campaigns will generate so much bad publicity for the GOP, the party will lose the election. But the voters would see an impeachment attempt for what it is: a politically-motivated ploy to influence the election.
On what basis, George? Because 'Rats don't like them?
No, that was Elenor Mondale, I believe.
Actually, she was pretty hot at the time...
It’s sad that a WW II hero became such an anti American twit.
Actually, Alzheimer’s would be a really good way to die. Obviously, for friends and family it’s miserable, but for the person “suffering” with the disease it’s an easy way to go. You don’t have a worry in the world.
Call me cruel and/or demented, but since your nervous system is dulled beyond belief, there’s very little pain for the person suffering with Alzheimer’s.
He was trounced. For some reason, the blue states now red.
You’re right. McGovern would be a decent human to have a beer with, but his common sense quotient has always been remarkably low.
I was going to say the same thing. He was a B-24 pilot in WWII and flew many missions over Germany. I have no idea what he is thinking now.
I think you meant 35. :)
Is that old turd still emiting CO2?
“...painfully concluded...” Yeah, right. McG has always been a moonbat, and now he’s just an old moonbat. We should listen to a guy who ran for president once, because he’s like an expert, or somethin’.
