A Richmond-area police officer has been awarded a Silver Star for valorous actions in Iraq while deployed with his Army National Guard unit.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 James B. Herring left his armored Humvee twice to protect his fellow soldiers during a withering ambush near Baqouba, Iraq, in December 2006, according to an Army citation of the award.

Herring, 46, is a warrant officer with Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. He received his award in a ceremony Saturday in North Carolina.

Herring is also a lieutenant in the Chesterfield County Police, where he has been since 1983. His mother, Susan Dillon, and stepfather, Michael Dillon, live in Norfolk.

Cool. Richmond, VA. You should define your “local” in the headline....well deserved bragging rights.

This is one of many wonderful stories about bravery and courage, God bless our troops!

Sadly you don’t hear about the many stories unless you have family or friends that are in the Military, cause liberal media doesn't’t wanna show the good that is happending over in the middle east cause of the US Military and their allies..

I was kind of thinking of if I had a son, I’d have to move down south where the culture still encourages boys to become men. As apposed to Massachusetts that wants to feminize and Prozac( or what ever they drug boys up with ).

I don’t have his actual citation, but here’s the gist of it:

Spent 15 months in Iraq as a Stryker platoon leader (out of Ft. Lewis, WA). Always in the thick of things .....in lovely areas like Mosul, Sadr City, Dora section of Baghdad (real Indian country). You get the idea.

They conducted between 400-500 patrols, ~ 50 raids (including nabbing a few highly sought-after types)......and he brought home every one of his guys without so much as a Purple Heart among them, despite constant fire, grenades, RPG fire, IED’s, you name it. Brought them ALL back....the only one in that entire huge deployed group that could say that.

To top it off.....he never once fired his own weapon in anger. Not once. He believed, and imbued into his men, that they are professionals; that randomly firing where you “think” they might be would put them at a level little above the terrorists. Have a target? Go for it. You don’t? Show restraint. A true pro.

For that and more, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Well deserved, IMHO. He’s also a FReeper (”Future Snake Eater”).
