Why was it released “anonymously” by the official. Of course its on the fleet website now. The AP had already pumped it out to the entire world.

i suspect if anything is afoot, we won’t know about it until the bombing has already started.

so far the markets are calm and they have a pretty good ear to the ground . . . so for now, it looks like 1) a provacative move by the Iranian naval RG and 2) a mid-air colission happening within a 48 hour or so time span. hopefully nothing more than a coincidence, but time shall tell

Doubt it. President Bush will be there for the next week and they will want little to happen.

Just a brief intermission to say G-d Bless and protect our brave sailors and airmen who are in harm’s way in that lake of vipers known as the Persian Gulf.

Who says we don’t like news like this? If there is to be war, let it begin here.

i doubt it as well. however, if this really were to be a shoot down . . . i doubt GW would still be going on his trip. Likely, just a coincidence. Still in this part of the world and given current tensions its probably wise to keep an eye on things for the next day or so

Since it involved a super hornet (two seater) and an F/A-18C single seat, it may be a refueling accident.

Something to chew on, folks:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/01/07/world/main3683082.shtml

“2 Navy Fighter Jets Crash In Persian Gulf

(CBS/AP) Two U.S. Navy fighter jets plunged into the Persian Gulf Monday after a mid-air collision, but all three pilots were rescued safely, a top Navy commanders said Monday.

There is no word yet on their injuries, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.

Preliminary reports reveal that these crashes were not due to hostile fire and were unrelated to Monday’s confrontation between U.S. warships and Iranian Revolutionary Guard fast boats.

Navy Vice Adm. Kevin J. Cosgriff told reporters that the three pilots have been brought back to the USS Harry Truman, the aircraft carrier they were operating from, and are in good condition. Cosgriff, who is commander of the Navy’s 5th Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, said the pilots were undergoing medical checks.

According to the Navy, teams from the Truman rescued the three aviators who ejected after their F/A-18 Super Hornets crashed during operations in the Gulf. The aircraft are from Carrier Air Wing Three, which is deployed to the Persian Gulf with the Truman Carrier Strike Group.

Cosgriff said it was a mid-air collision. Information released by the 5th Fleet said the two aircraft were providing “close air support from Iraq when they crashed.”

One of the jets that crashed held two pilots, the other held just one.

The crash occurred at about 1 p.m. EST.”

Preliminary reports say no hostile fire. Preliminary, as in there will be a more formal report in the future. Are they including possible hostile fire in their analysis? Is there an implication that hostile fire was pleasant, but it wasn’t the cause of the crashes? I thinks it is a possibility, IMHO.

LOL. “...hostile fire was pleasant...” I kill me. I meant “present”, not “pleasant”.

Since it involved a super hornet (two seater) and an F/A-18C single seat, it may be a refueling accident.

According to the Navy Times, both aircraft were SuperHornets, one F/A-18E single seat and one F/A-18F two seater.

Thank God the pilots were rescued by us and not some greasy Iranians putt-putting around the gulf in their souped-up bathtubs.

This ‘official” who gave out this information needs to be arrested and put in the brig. It has not been released for a reason. At the very least, our enemies know we are short two aircraft in a war zone.

Before the pilots even hit the water the entire carrier battle group set "River City One" status and all outgoing communication from the ship was secured. All the phone lines, email, internet, etc. are immediately shut down. The procedure takes about a minute.

You can guarantee this release was authorized.
