I may be off on the exact percentage but I recall spending about half my time at sea and in port working on safety, damage control, rescue etc. It was not my rating but I did get assigned to the fire party for about a year. We trained and trained and trained on these very things. If you study WWII Naval action, the one thing we got from the Japs kamikaze attacks were amazing lessons on how to save ship and crew NO MATTER WHAT. Even pretty early in the war ‘down pilot rescue’ was an art that we perfected.

I don’t know if this was specific to my ship but these sort of items were drummed into our young skulls constantly.

Thanks for the correction; I have a son in the F/A-18C FRS and I made the assumption that the single seater was a “C” model and not an “E” model.

Apparently the F-18 uses Buddy Stores. I've installed one on an A-7 but didn't know F/A-18's of any variety used them.

What would the purpose be of releasing the information “anonymously” then?

Things are heating up. Iran is asking for it. Let’s give it to ‘em.

Does the Navy still use KA-6 tankers?

Hard to imagine that they both experienced mechanical failure at the exact same time.

I’d imagine not. No more Intruders (A-6) and the EA-6 has been phased out and I doubt there ever was a KEA-6 (EKA-6?) variant anyway.

What would the purpose be of releasing the information “anonymously” then?

So that he could put out the important information that the pilots are alive and have been returned to the ship without being obligated to release any further details.

No more A-6E Intruders, but the EA-6B is still very active as the United States' only EW Jammer aircraft (after the retirement several years ago of the EF-111A.)

There certainly was a KA-6D variant, but Wiki says they have been retired, leaving only the S-3B Vikings and E/F-18E-F SuperHornets, both with buddy packs, as carrier based tankers.

DoD News Briefing with Vice Adm. Cosgriff at the Pentagon, Arlington, Va. (DOD Defenselink)

http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/transcript.aspx?transcriptid=4116

“Before I talk about the encounter in the Strait of Hormuz, I should report that earlier this evening local time in the Gulf we had a mid-air collision from two — between two F-18 Super Hornets operating off the Harry S. Truman in the northern Arabian Gulf. Three aviators total were involved. The two aircraft were lost. The three aviators had been safely recovered aboard USS Harry S. Truman in good condition and are being checked out medically. So I want to give you that update that occurred. We’ll get the — the PAOs will get you the details on — as they’re available on squadrons and that sort of thing.?

“What we like to hear, is always the truth?”

Not always.

But we usually ‘know’ when it’s not. What is important is whether one acknowledges the truth, even if one likes the lie.

Could have been 1.5 pilots per plane. That would explain what has happened to all the half children from people having 1.5 kids.

and the EA-6 has been phased out

You might want to tell VAQ-130, currently embarked aboard the Truman, that the aircraft they are currently flying and will continue to fly for several more years, along with VMAQ-1, VMAQ-2, VMAQ-3, VMAQ-4, VAQ-129, VAQ-131, VAQ-132, VAQ-134, VAQ-135, VAQ-136, VAQ-137, VAQ-139, VAQ-141 and VAQ-142, "has been phased out".

Truman (CVN 75). Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 and Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 10 launched its first series of operational missions over Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I have to think they wouldn’t actually take a shot. I don’t think we’d quite put up with that. They want US to take the first shot.
