BLAIRSVILLE, Ga.: Authorities found the body of a missing hiker Monday, hours after a judge denied bond to the man accused of kidnapping her in the mountains of northern Georgia.

Investigators were also examining whether the death and the disappearance of two elderly hikers in October in North Carolina were related.

Greta just showed the press conference - they made a statement that Hilton led them to the body tonight at 7:30. Up til then- he hadn’t cooperated with police at all.

Maybe the police took the death penalty off the table in exchange for the location??

I've been wondering if he'd be tied to any other disappearances. Wouldn't surprise me.

My husband and two sons went into Dawson Forest on Saturday morning to do some survival stuff for my son’s 4-H project. The road to the place where he wanted to go was blocked by a Sheriff’s car. When my husband questioned him, he denied that they were there about Meredith but now we know that that wasn’t true. I am thankful that God protected my boys from that and thankful that the family has this closure. Not that it will ever really end for them. God bless them all.

Was she in a national park or a state park? I’d thought it was the latter. Sadly, in Georgia it’s illegal to defend yourself in both, although we expect to change that soon.

Not that it should matter to the murderer - he needs to fry regardless.

But I can feel nothing but intense hatred for the verminous criminal who took the life of this poor girl. Anyone have any advice re this?

If he is a serial killer, he might have a large body count. At 61, he’s rather old to just get started at whacking strangers. Though, he could also be another Arthur Shawcross — the Rochester serial killer who spent years in jail between his early child killings and his later prostitute murders — jail time does have the benefit of keeping down the opportunities for scum to hurt other.

...there’ve been a number of murders/abductions on the Appalachian Trail in recent years.....no way I would hike a place like that with my wife and not have my Glock.....there are sections that are just too isolated.

Oh, yeah. As a police officer friend of mine in N GA said, "This ain't the first time he's been to the rodeo." He didn't just wake up New Year's morning and decide he was going to go kill somebody.

They have linked him to the murder of an elderly couple, a hairdresser in Hall County, and another young female hiker.

I doubt the police had the authority to take the DP off the table. They can't make any promise of reward or hope of benefit to get a confession. But they can be very persuasive without that help. With the evidence they have on him, he was bound to break sooner or later.

These murderers always seem to think they can outsmart the cops, but they forget that the police have investigated a heck of a lot more crimes than the murderer has committed.

They didn't catch this one near soon enough, but at least they caught him.

Ladies, don't hike alone. This is the third murder here in the last year or so plus one near-murder of ladies out hiking or running on public trails by themselves. And put your trust in the dependable products of the Colt Firearms Manufacturing Co.

Meredith Emerson should have taken an NRA Refuse to be a Victim course.

One is taught to carry OC Pepper Spray.

It also protects against bears.

I agree. I worked in Corrections for 25 years and saw it first hand. The first thing I thought of when I saw this guy's picture was that it probably wasn't the first time he'd killed. I pray that if he is indeed responsible for other people's deaths, that they can close those cases and give the family members some peace. It won't bring back their loved ones, but hopefully justice will be served.

When officers arrived, they found Hilton and confirmed his identity, Parish said. They also found a dog in Hilton's white van, and it was taken to an animal shelter in DeKalb County.

From another source I read this when Hilton was found, they found a dog in his van.

Is it within the realm of possibilities that Hilton was using his dog to lower the defense of his victim(s)?

If so, that is really, really a low down dirty SOB...

Actually, the bat might be questionable. But you’re right, we would have permitted this 120 lb. girl to punch her male attacker. She probably did, right before he murdered her.

My point was actually that in a reasonable society, she would have been permitted to ‘’punch’’ her attacker with 230gr of high-velocity lead, which might have actually done some good.

I wondered about whether he had killed before but if he was a serial killer wasn’t he a very sloppy one? He put her bloody clothes and belongings in a dumpster, he cut the bloody seatbelt out of his van and threw it away with the clothes. That was just dumb.

Sometimes it is hard to love the sinner but hate the sin, particularly when cruelty is involved. Praying is all I can think of, that and remembering that I need God’s grace and mercy as much as does this man.

May our Heavenly Father bless the loved ones with strength and peace.

That’s what I was thinking: that this kill probably wasn’t his first but another in a long line of murders.

Notice how the media isn’t mentioning any criminal record - wonder if Hilton is his real name.

I agree, firearms are what she needed as well as a companion. Even then a big man with a knife can still kill. Look at the Florida couple murdered at the college town apartment. Big kid and the perp fought but without a weapon it didn’t do any good.

There is also a young lady who went missing while walking her dog near Athens on the 29th. Very similar circumstances with the dog found roaming around a neighborhood. Athens is a very easy drive from where the POS lived and from the mountains.

FYI -

The US Senate is considering legislation that would allow the American serf to legally carry concealed arms in the federal socialist national parks.

This sensible idea is being met with bleats from castrated sheep infesting the eastern big cities.

The purse-carrying metrosexuals at the New York Times, for one, insisted that bearing arms is only allowed for the national guard.

Disregarding the silly prattle from the wimps, we know that concealed carry is a sure-fire way to protect yourself from national park predators, both the four and two-legged kinds.

Many national parks, especially those in the southwest, are roads for criminals who smuggle drugs and illegal aliens. Crime like robbery and rape is also increasing in our national parks. Concealed carry would place scumbags on notice that their next intended victim might ventilate them.

Besides, there aren’t enough rangers to protect everyone and never will be. Nor should we need to check our civil right to bear arms at the park’s gate. And we certainly aren’t meant to be dinner for a grizzly.

Here are the 10 most dangerous parks:
1. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona
2. Amistad National Recreation Area, Texas
3. Big Bend National Park, Texas
4. Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada/Arizona
5. Coronado National Memorial Arizona
6. Biscayne National Park, Florida
7. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
8. Delaware Water Gap, New Jersey/Pennsylvania
9. Edison National Historic Site, New Jersey
10. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

He has a minor criminal record -- two convictions for nonviolent crimes. Can't recall exactly what they were, but one I think was theft by taking.

If he's committed crimes under an alias, the fingerprints will turn that up pretty quickly.

"That was just dumb."

Lazy and sloppy is more like it. He probably has killed before, and not having been caught for any of them, he became arrogant and sloppy as time passed.

During the years I worked in NY State prisons, people couldn't believe some of the dumb things criminals do that lead to their arrests. We used to tell them: "Well, there not in here because they're bright!"
