Today's memorial for a Parkville family killed in a drunken driving crash in Ohio was protested by a group that was recently ordered to pay millions for protesting the Westminster funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq.
Three members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, known for protests at military funerals, were demonstrating about a block from St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, the site of the service...

Phelps is an angry man, and his cult is full of lawyers. I must have missed the memo from Heaven making him a prophet.

grrrrr I can’t stand “Rev” Phelps and his cult, but there was victory that a lawsuit that was against his cult from a US Marine’s father that died over in the middle east,”Rev” Phelps and his morons had the nerve to protest his son’s funeral and the father turned around a suited them, and won!!!!!!
But sadly this crazy cult is still around and people still follow Phelps

The demonstrators said the (drunken driving)
deaths are God's retaliation against the community for a recent $11 million jury award against the Kansas group. A federal jury in Baltimore made the award in October to Albert Snyder, of York, Pa., who sued after the group protested his son's military funeral in Maryland.Wow. These are some sick puppies.

They’re a bunch of sad, truly demented crackpots, but I will defend their right to speak an unpopular message. As one of the minority conservative Republicans living the the “People’s Republic of Maryland”, I worry about the court’s willingness to award huge monetary damages solely on the basis that the offenders’ message is unpopular. The next thing you know they’ll be awarding damages against pro-life protestors.
In this case, the story says that the protestors were a block away. If they interrupted the service or blocked access, then I could see getting so angry as to wish violence against them as some in this thread have.
But 3 people standing a block away? meh - just go about your business and ignore them. They are simply not worthy of so much attention.

I have to say that I agree with you. It sickens me to see this happen, but grow up people; ignoring them would send a message louder than any monetary judgement. Freedom of expression is a sacred thing.

Have I told the story about the WBC protesting outside of one of our Lutheran churches?

OK, I'll tell:
A few years ago, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) began taking a questionable pro-gay policy stance. The Westboro Bucolic Cult naturally seized upon the opportunity. The problem is that they focused their protest upon
all Lutheran churches, instead of ELCA churches. So, one Sunday morning, one of our WELS/ELS churches in Kansas--Topeka or Wichita, I don't recall--was ground zero for the WBC gang.
One of our pastors was visiting at the church that Sunday, and he tried to explain to the Phelps gang that they were mistaken, and that we were not who they had in mind. (see
WELS beliefs).
It didn't matter--the WBCers only protested harder. They figured that Lutherans are Lutherans, regardless of location and real doctrinal differences. They simply will not listen to anything resembling the truth. Ever hear any Gospel from the Phelps gang? Didn't think so.

In “theory” you make a point however free speech is a double edged sword. While you may have the freedom to say what you want, you also should have to face the repercussions of your “free speech”. What these vile people are doing is an affront to anybody with a shred of decency therefore getting their asses kicked from here to next Sunday should be legit as well. I believe back in the good old days that would have already happened and we would not be seeing or hearing about them.

Are they just going to start “protesting” at EVERY funeral now?
They’ll need lots and lots of members to spread around!

Oh, I get it now:
“The demonstrators said the deaths are God’s retaliation against the community for the $11 million award by a jury in Baltimore against the Kansas group.”
So, they think northeast Baltimore and Westminster constitute “a community”?
The 1 has no connection to the other. And to top it off, there’ve been many deaths in that time and many funerals between Baltimore and Westminster. Why pick on this 1 instance?
There’s no logic here.

Granted, but now that I think of it, he’s really right about the “award”. It is a bit excessive. It’s 1 thing to get a few thousand; it’s another to have millions.
In that regard, it is similar to all the frivolous lawsuits going about and begging for millions over “spilt coffee”.
