LOS ANGELES — The Golden Globes, the ceremony known for getting Hollywood's awards season off to a rollicking start, will be reduced to a news conference Sunday by the writers strike and will likely draw picket lines and lack star power.
Despite the revamped ceremony announced Monday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Screen Actors Guild said it was encouraging its members to skip the show in support of the two-month walkout by the Writers Guild of America.
"The WGA informed us they will picket the event on Sunday," the actors guild said in a statement.
Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America West, said union leaders were uncertain if they still would picket outside the Golden Globes since they were unclear about what form the awards announcement would take.
"I would say an awards show in news conference clothing would still be picketed, but I just don't know if it's been definitively decided," Verrone said.
As he arrived at Monday's Critics' Choice Awards, George Clooney said he belongs to six unions and would not cross any picket lines.

Who really gives a rats arse? We can go a few weeks without hearing how wonderful entertainers are.

These awards shows should be cancelled permanently, period.

There are tens of thousands of people who would love to be screenwriters and millions of people who would love to be actors.
The nonunion talent pool is enormous and they would love to get a break for a fraction of what the unions are being paid.
There are tons of starving actors out there who have been trying to get into SAG for years.
Hey! What about the news ‘broadcasters’? That ain’t the news and somebody must be writing the fiction most of them call ‘news’. Why are they still on air?
Not that I care a whit, but I thought the writers came to an agreement in the last day or so, that the strike had ended.
Drink some adult beverages?
Cook a barbecue?
Make love to the wife?
All of above?

The WGA already has won the battle, in that the GG awards ceremony is a goner.
So now they’re picketing a .. news conference?
(As to the dispute underlying the strike itself, I have NO idea which “side” I’d favor. But even it were the WGA side, I can’t imagine wasting the fiscal and other capital on a picket of the “news conference.”)
Who knew they needed writers for these exercises in egotism?
Nobody cares about these people. Maybe they’ll finally take the hint.

Any one of these shows could go on without writers. But no one will cross the picket lines.
Last night Queen Latifah did wonderfully winging it for the People’s Choice Awards. We watched all two hours waiting to see *sigh from my daughters* Zac Efron as he took the award for the best song from a movie. He didn’t show.
I actually liked the show. Lots of old films of past winners and Queen herself singing and yucking it up. And yes we booed when Kiefer Sutherland lost to Patrick Dempsey.
Shouldn’t these progressive, better-than-us actors be out there supporting the striking union?
I just cannot express how devastated I am by this news. The impact this will have will extend far beyond simply missing the quality performances and inspiring speeches of the winners. What are the celebrity magazines going to write about without the fashion hits and misses? How are we going to know whose political opinion to listen to without seeing them on that stage, accepting their award, and giving their empassioned speech? Who is going to promote fashion designers, so we know what clothes to buy, or what hair style to adopt? How are we going to know which programs we should watch, unless we know what everyone else likes? The loss is incalculable. Please join me in a moment of silent meditation for this loss.
