US to send 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan

The Pentagon is preparing to send at least 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan in April to bolster efforts to hold off another expected Taliban offensive in the spring, military officials said Wednesday.
The move represents a shift in Pentagon thinking that has been slowly developing after months of repeated insistence that the U.S. was not inclined to fill the need for as many as 7,500 more troops that commanders have asked for there. Instead, Defense Secretary Robert Gates pressed NATO allies to contribute the extra forces.
Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said Wednesday that a proposal will go before Gates on Friday that would send a ground and air Marine contingent as well as a Marine battalion — together totaling more than 3,000 forces — to southern Afghanistan for a "one-time, seven-month deployment."
Gates, he said, will want to review the request, and is not likely to make a final decision on Friday.
"He will take it and consider it thoroughly before approving it," said Morrell. "I just want to get people away from the idea that this is going to be imminently approved by the secretary."
He said Gates "has some more thinking to do on this matter because it's a serious allocation of forces."
Morrell added that Gates' thinking on the issue has "progressed a bit" over time as it became clear that it was politically untenable for many of the NATO nations to contribute more combat troops to the fight.
"The commanders need more forces there. Our allies are not in the position to provide them. So we are now looking at perhaps carrying a bit of that additional load," the spokesman said.
Morrell said the move, first reported Wednesday by ABC News, was aimed at beating back "another Taliban offensive" that is expected this spring — as has occurred in previous years.
When Gates was in Afghanistan last month, commanders made it clear they needed the additional forces.
Last year was the most violent since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. The number of attacks has surged, including roadside bombings and suicide assaults.
Currently there are about 27,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, including 14,000 with the NATO-led coalition. The other 13,000 U.S. troops are training the Afghan forces and hunting al-Qaida terrorists.
Morrell said that while the Marine ground and air contingent would be put in place to prevent a spring Taliban offensive, the Marine battalion likely would be used to train Afghan forces.
The shift in U.S. thinking on sending more combat forces to Afghanistan has appeared inevitable in recent weeks, based on the political realities in many of the NATO nations.
In meeting after meeting during his Afghanistan visit in early December, Gates heard pleas from both Afghan and U.S. military leaders for up to 7,500 more forces, with about half needed for training.
About a week later, Gates was asked by a reporter after a NATO meeting in Scotland whether the Bush administration was considering sending more troops to Afghanistan, in the event that the shortfalls are not bridged by NATO allies. Gates replied, "Not in the short term."
But by Dec. 21, Gates acknowledged during a press briefing that the Pentagon would "be looking at the requirement ourselves."
Bush administration officials pressed NATO allies for months to fill gaps in troops levels in Afghanistan, but many allied governments face public opposition to deeper involvement there.
Gates said at the Scotland meeting that the administration had decided to tone down its appeals to allies, taking into account "political realities" faced by some European governments whose citizens may see less reason to intervene in Afghanistan.
The Bush administration has launched a wide-ranging review of its policy in Afghanistan to ensure that gains made since the radical Islamist Taliban regime was ousted in 2001 are not lost and to bolster Afghan President Hamid Karzai's nascent government.

Afghanistan is Nato controlled, why US Marines?
When General Conway asked that the Marines take over Afghanistan a few months ago his idea was shot down by Gates. A year from now there will be 40,000 Marines in country. (who knows best)
Because it'd take 300,000 from any other country to do the job that 3,000 marines can do?

Probably because most NATO forces, except Britain and Commowealth, aren’t engaged in actual fighting. Namely the Germans, the Italians, French etc. are sitting around and give only half hearted non-combat support. Someone has to eliminate the Taliban... why not the professionals?
More than half the troops in Afghanistan are US today and more to come. Only the Brits, Aussies, Dutch, Canadians and US are pulling their weight. Maybe with Sarko running France they will get into the fight.
There are Marines there now.
I think we need to replace the Canadians in the south. They are always talking of leaving because of the casualties and politics back home. I like the Canadian effort and all but we need a stronger presence in the south.

S-Korea at least is not in NATO and therefore are not legally as much obliged to assist us... but the French, Germans and Italians are. And they are doing close to NOTHING.
He is just getting back from Southern Afghanistan and I can’t wait till the end of the month to talk to he and the others on his team about their experiences. I’m just a father, but my wife and I had to live through every day of this deployment. It was a tough one.

AF search and rescue
The US sends an additional Battalion sized Infantry unit to Afghanistan every year to beef up forces during the start of the fighting season. The last several years these additional forces have come from the 82nd. This year its the marines turn.
Now if they can just get an Army Colonel to send them all home after the first ambush, this will be a real short deployment and everyone will be home for Christmas.
I know we cannot ask the russians. I saw a special on tv last week on the killing and raping they did when they were there during the war.
i had no idea since the media never covered it but the russians using their helicopters to mow down cities, children, hell everything — was horrific.

US Marines are the only ones left with any of the 7.62x51 rifles that are far more effective. The Marines “found” the M-14s that they “lost” under Clinton when the Presidential order came down to destroy them.

If the people of Afghanistink want freedom, they are going to have to learn how to fight for it at a societal level. I don't think it's a lesson they can learn in less than a generation.
I admire President Bush's vision of a new ME, but we need help and we can't do the job alone. Sadly, it seems the leftists worldwide want chaos to rule there. Does not bode well for the future.

This young man already did nine months in Iraq. Was wounded three time and received two medals for valor. They lost 12 Marines out of his company and had another 22 wounded. Suffered about 30 IED's and killed about 120 insurgents. The best praise I gave him though was for throwing a NY Times reporter out of his HumVee and telling him it was time to walk. Reporter changed his tune very quickly.

In March 2006, Fareba Miriam became the first woman to enroll in the para-vet training program sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Program (RAMP). She learned about the para-vet training when she was teaching geography at a high school in Faizabad, Badakshan, a northern province of Afghanistan. Fareba is 26, the eldest daughter in a family of 12. Although her family does not raise livestock, many members of her community are dependent on healthy herds and flocks to maintain their livelihood.[...]
The USAID’s Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Program will provide Fareba with equipment, furniture, and initial operating capital to help establish a Veterinary Field Unit. Vaccines are ordered in bulk and sold to para-vets who in turn charge market prices for vaccinating livestock. The para-vets deliver a range of veterinary services including conducting diagnostic services, delivering vaccinations, and performing basic surgery on livestock and poultry in rural communities. Operating as small businesses will allow Fareba and other para-vets a chance to generate income to contribute to the support of their families while providing a valuable service to their communities.
Responding to the need to improve livestock health and reduce mortality rates, USAID has established 386 Veterinary Field Units in 31 provinces throughout Afghanistan.

The OPFOR pilots at Ft. Polk who fly the An-2 “Colt”, the Mi-2 “Hoplite”, the Mi-8 “Hip”, and the Mi-24 “Hind” rack up more flight hours per month than Russian pilots do in a year or more.
Either that or all would end well, with neck in place.
