Michigan Next, G.O.P. Rivals Turn to the Economy

...snip...

Mr. Romney told an audience of more than 200 at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids that Michigan’s economic woes were personal to him and said the state’s prospects were tied up with the nation’s.

He talked at length about his roots in the state, where he was born and reared, drawing applause when he recalled his father, George, who was governor of Michigan. He went on to recall campaigning as a teenager for his father, whose slogan was about getting Michigan “on the move again.”

“We’re going to make sure this state gets on the move again,” Mr. Romney said. “I care about Michigan. For me, it’s personal. It’s personal for me because it’s where I was born and raised.”

Earlier in the day, after hearing from a voter who recalled his father, Mr. Romney choked up momentarily, according to a pool reporter who was present. “He was a great man, and I miss him dearly,” Mr. Romney said.

“Crying because of emotion for the memory of one’s father is far different than crying for yourself because you think you are losing. Hillary’s was totally narcissistic.”

I’m with you on this one.
I don’t care for Mitt’s politics, but choking up over a dead loved one is much different than Hillary’s strange little rant.

You don’t stand in front of a bunch of strangers and cry tears about him do you?

Not scorn, but I will question the motives - for obvious reasons here - and the stability of that person in trying times.

and I am not even remotely interested in rehashing the death of my father in public, and to strangers while fishing for votes.

My dad died when I was in my early thirties and I cried like a baby.

X2! I don’t even want to bring touchy feely emotions into political play!

Banal.

Yep. I wonder at times how my husband copes — having no one. Now, his family is my family.

I am not Mormon, so I don’t need to polite.

Bashing a guy over being a slight bit emotional over the memory of his DEAD father is just about as chicken sh!t as a person can get.

You know, I have liked Fred too, but you know, I would bet money that posts such as this, is NOT what Fred would want associated with his good name.

Doug, did you read Richard Cohen's article in the Washington Post regarding Hillary's "breakdown"? The Clinton campaign could not have written it any better. He claims that Hillary wasn't crying for herself. She was actually crying for the country.

I literally became sick to my stomach while reading it. It was that bad.

I totally agree with you : that episode showed everyone with a brain just how appallingly narcissistic Hillary truly is. You'd think she was the first person to ever endure the rigors of a Presidential campaign. She really believes the nation couldn't flourish without her as our leader.

I didn’t read the article. I spoke to a noted psychologist friend after the incident. She knew it was absolutely narcissistic and all about Hillary. She also described the Clintons as phony, evil, and loathsome.

Unfortunately, we may have 50% of those voters who vote in 2008 do so without the benefit of active brainwaves.

Doesn’t sound like much of a cry, but consider this.

The guy has an extraordinary brain. I think even the haters know this. Valedictorian of undergrad school. Top 5% at Harvard. This is not a Kerry/Bush fight over who was best student. It’s not even a contest.

But if George Romney had not been his father he would likely never have been able to afford Harvard. Or to start at Stanford before BYU. He may have had some seed capital to start Bain that came from a personal fortune.

The thing here is, there are thousands of offspring from very rich families. They all have these extraordinary opportunities. Only a tiny few can elevate as he has with those opportunities.

And, of course, that level of intellect knows it. He knows that his brain in a son of a restaurant waitress would not have gone to Harvard and made $250 million. So he lives his life grateful to his Dad.

Sorry, Bill, you'll get no support from this quarter.

Yes, I'd cry about Eric, and I wouldn't give a darn if it was infront of strangers or not.

Folks on the campaign trail are under immense pressure and scrutiny 24-7-365. You expect to see some cracks, at some point; how they handle those cracks is the test of the person's character.

If he was boo-hooing about something stupid, I'd be right beside you calling him a wuss.

Getting a little choked up in remembering a beloved parent? Not even a blip on the screen.

Tell it to President Bush. And his father. They get emotional pretty frequently. I think it’s sweet.

Your post reminds me of my hubby and every time we hear the song, “Mansions of the Lord,” from “We Were Soldiers.” It makes us think of President Reagan. It’s hard to hear that and not get choked up. I daresay hubby could get through it in public without blubbering. I sure can’t. It all depends on how stoic he forces himself to be.

Mitt’s under a lot of stress right now and thoughts of his father could understandably make him cry. I’m sure under most circumstances he can talk about his father and memories of him without losin’ it. It all depends on circumstance.
