Will S,Carolina Voters Save Us From A Rino Nomination?
self

Posted on 01/11/2008 11:10:56 PM PST by davidtalker

I rarely post. However, this needs to be raised. If you examine the unfolding GOP nomination process only South Carolina GOP voters can save us from a RINO nominee.

If McCain or the Huckster win in S.C. and McCain beats Romney in Michigan, it may be over. Romney is toast. Fred is toast. Rudy never got started. Huckster can't win on Super Duper Tuesday. McCain coasts to nomination.

In other words, only a Fred Thompson victory in S.C. can save us from a RINO. The table is set after last night's debate. Will voters respond. or split the evangelical vote between Fred and the pretender Huckabee? Enabling McCain to coast to victory. Fred was smart to go after the Huckster. Will S.C. evangelicals rally to Fred and have the Huckster eat his dust? If they don't we get a RINO. period.

Unless South Carolina doesn’t mean what it once did, in which case we’re in deeper doo-doo yet.

FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.

During my time in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst, I personally served under both Presidents Carter and Reagan. Without argument, President Reagan was the best commander-in-chief a military person could ever have served under. Fred Thompson possesses the same qualities and vision as President Reagan in that he is strong on national defense and sees a dire need to secure our borders and control immigration.

I can think of no better person to lead this country and fix the problems we have. He is the only candidate from either party who has specific and detailed plans on border security and immigration reform; revitalization of America’s armed forces; saving and protecting Social Security; and tax relief and economic growth. These are detailed on his Web site at www.fred08.com . I challenge you to find any other candidate who has laid out specific plans to fix anything.

Fred Thompson has published his first principles, some of which are mentioned above. In addition to those, he strongly believes in individual liberty, personal responsibility, limited government, federalism, traditional American values, the rule of law and is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment — all concepts established during the birth of our country and documented in our Constitution.

Again, try to find any candidate who has laid out their plans to “fix” this country. You will find they all speak in vague and abstract terms on their plans.

For those who have heard Fred Thompson speak, you will usually hear him say that the Fred Thompson you see today is the same Fred Thompson you saw yesterday and is the same Fred Thompson you will see tomorrow. He stands by his principles and values and doesn’t shift his positions based on polls or public opinion; in other words, he doesn’t say what the voters want to hear just to get elected, but remains steadfast on his views and convictions. As many of you know, President Reagan’s favorite paper, “Human Events” has endorsed Fred, as have many other organizations and individuals, including National Right To Life, about 13 state chapters, Jim Robinson here at FR, and a slew of others.

During his time in the Senate he focused on three areas: to lower taxes, strengthen national security and expose waste in the federal government. Fred Thompson has foreign policy experience, having served as member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Senate Intelligence committees.

As chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, he opened the investigation in 1997 on the Chinese government’s attempt to influence American policies and elections, and this investigation identified connections with the Clinton administration (documented in the committee’s report).

As a member of the Finance Committee, he worked tirelessly to enact three major tax-cut bills. Fred Thompson remains steadfast and even though a person may not agree with all his views and he understands some may disagree with him, you can count on him to be consistent and unwavering.

Don’t be fooled by his laid back approach and what critics call his “laziness.” As a former assistant U.S. attorney, he earned a reputation as a tough prosecutor and he possesses the toughness this country needs in order to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s issues.

I ask that you take a hard look at what this country needs, then take a hard look at all the other candidates’ views, policies, their records and their track record on consistency. Fred Thompson possesses integrity, loyalty, commitment, energy and decisiveness, all traits of an effective leader, and will emerge as the best person to take this country boldly forward.

Fred Thompson is the only Conservative who can win the nomination. All the other top nominees are liberal. Romney says he’s not a liberal now but who knows what he would do once he got in office.

I just hope that South Carolina voters realize Thompson is the true conservative. I hope the Evangelicals realize that Fred Thompson stands for their values just as much as Huckabee, but is also conservative on all other issues which Huckabee isn’t. Fred Thompson has gotten many endorsements from anti abortion originations.

South Carolina, please vote for Fred Thompson.

Respectfully disagree w/your analysis. It would appear to be highly likely that the 'Pubbie side will be down to either 3 or 4 candidates by, or just after, ''super'' Tuesday.

I, fon one, am hoping that one of that 3 or 4 is Mr. Thompson.

You probably know that Mitt has pulled his resources out of the Michigan race.

While candidate McCain won't be the End-of-the-World-as-We-Know-It, the respective choices of VPs will make the difference.

You’re absolutely correct!

I would phrase it differently - this is conservatives’ last stand to regain control of a national party. Fred is a conservative and a good vehicle for accomplishing this.

If conservatives fail here - fail in South Carolina to give Fred a win - then we’ve lost a national party, its infrastructure and the ability to heavily influence policy.

Conservatives need to put their money where their mouth is - donate to Fred, volunteer for Fred, phone for Fred and vote for Fred. That is the only way to regain control of the party.

I donated $250 last Sunday, and another $100 last night.

For three decades now,as SC goes so goes the South and the GOP.The South has the largest concentration of conservatives in the country so it ain’t such a “half-assed analysis” as you say,it’s reasonable political speculation.

“OK smart guy. Even Fred has said he’s gotta win in S.C. Fred falls short who saves us from a RINO?”

Romney is the last conservative man standing if Fred falls in South Carolina. He’s still got a lot of support out west, where illegal immigration is a big issue (hurting McCain) and where evangelicals are a much smaller part of the electorate (hurting Huckabee). Having close to a 10% Mormon population doesn’t hurt Romney either.

Can Fred still hang in there with a 2nd place finish in SC??? Maybe. But first would really help. Fred needs to establish himself as better than the Huckster to capture the South.

In my eyes, even Giluiani is better than McCain or Huckabee.

Just a reminder to all on why we kicked McCain to the curb in 2000 and will again.

His part in the Keating Five scandal.

His ready acceptance of the Dem crossover vote. The common Republican statement was “Democrats don’t choose our candidate.” Mobilized plenty on our side to the polls.

He’s just plain creepy.

I agree with you RE: Thompson in the most part.

However, I still can not get over the televised debate on CSPAN years ago where he let John Glenn walk all over him in one of those comittee meetings.

This was at the time that Glenn was “Whoring” himself for that last ride into space on the taxpayers dime !!

Thompson just sat there like a bump on a log and did not offer ANY counterpoint to Glenn’s rantings.

My jaw was on the floor !!

Frankly, if we are toast after just two of 50 primaries, depending on who wins, we have a much bigger problem than I thought. I guess the American people will let us know following the SC primary. Any candidate that quits after two primaries. Like John McLame, we don’t need as a President. Oh I forgot that was the last Presidential election. This one is different?

For dogcatcher maybe; not as the GOP nominee.

By the way, it was Romney's campaign that planted a false story to "The Politico" that Thompson was pulling out of the race. Mitt had them plant this the day of the Iowa Caucus.

Thompson told a reporter the sleaze story cost them at least 2-3% points in Iowa.

The Clinton sleaze machine could learn a thing to two from Sleazy Mitt.

why we kicked McCain to the curb in 2000 and will again. His part in the Keating Five scandal.

At least as bad as the Keating five stuff was the campaign finance "reform" and his pro-amnesty position are imho worse.

Many Freepers do not understand all the implications of the McCain Feingold legislation. It was a frontal assault on the first amendment to try to prevent individuals or groups from speaking in the public square in the period leading up to elections. It reserved the right of speech solely to the political parties (with limited funds) and most importantly, to the major media. The media was allowed unlimited authorization to propagandize for the leftist candidate of their choice while our candidates had to take it on the chin.

This was devastating legislation, grossly unconstitutional. McCain supported it because the major media loved it and he wanted to be on their good side.

This man is beneath our contempt. His attempts to silence us are unforgiveable--for all time.

Any further comments I might make on this man and this legislation are unfit for this civilized audience.

:-)

You are correct, and I’m encouraged to see that Romney finally hit 20% yesterday in the Rasmussen daily tracking poll. He had been in the teens forever, it seemed, but he’s now only two points out of the lead, behind McCain.

I hope Romney can beat McCain in Michigan, and Thompson (or somebody) can beat McCain in South Carolina.

Romney is the best bet to beat the Democrats.

This may not be true of all of them. Looking at the Huckster's support, it may not even be true of most of them.

For many evangelical voters, it may be that if a candidate gets the Jesus talk right, that whatever else he wants to do doesn't matter.

I’m not so sure. I think I’ve heard that only half of the delegates are chosen by primary election. The rest come from state party organizations, which are controlled by governors or party chairpeople. Primaries do indicate some measure of electability, and may influence the choices for unelected delegates, but, there have been a lot of occasions in which early primary/cauci winners have not been nominated. Good old fashioned smoke-filled (now smoke-free) rooms are still the place where the deals are made for choosing candidates.

1st or 2nd doesn't matter, in my opinion, nearly as much as if he beats Huck in South Carolina. He could probably hang in there if he was in 2nd behind McCain, but if it is behind Huck then it is probably over. They are splitting too many of the conservative votes to keep them both viable. So in order for Fred to continue, he must do it at Hucks expense.

I think that Fred only has a window of a few days to capitalize in SC. Tuesdays media coverage will be dominated by Michigan, and possibly John McCain if he looks to win Michigan. Wednesday and Thursday it will be dominated by the winner of Michigan, or the loser if Mitt doesn’t pull it out. The candidates will also move on to South Carolina by that time so he will be sharing the local media. So, in my opinion, Fred must capitalize in the next 3 days to turn the trend around. As of right now he is in 4th place. He may leapfrog over Mitt because Mitt is pulling out of SC. But the deciding factor will be can he beat Huck?

1st or 2nd in SC don’t mean nearly as much as if he can beat Huck. If he gets to a close 2nd with McCain being in 1st, I think he can continue. If he loses to Huck though I think that will be the end. He splits to many votes with Huck for them to both be viable.

Has he started running the commercials in SC yet? Are they good? Who do they target?
