WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration hit the brakes Friday on a controversial law requiring Americans to carry tamper-proof driver's licenses, delaying its final implementation by five years, until 2017.
A number of states have balked at the law, objecting to it largely over cost and privacy concerns. But under the administration's new edict, states that continue to fight compliance with the law face a penalty: Their residents will be forbidden from using driver's licenses to board airplanes or enter federal buildings as of May 11 of this year.

Good grief, Charlie Brown.
Looks like the implemtation of the new American police state will be temporarily postponed.
I’m sure DHS Secretary Skeletor is heartbroken at this development.
Illegals can vote without an ID, but citizens cannot fly on planes without one?
or two presidential elections...
What's the rush? That's only 16 years after 9/11. We wouldn't want our plodding bureaucracy to hurry in matters of life and death, would we?
If the entire program can be taken that casually, maybe we should just forget about it altogether. Our ruling classes have obviously adopted that position about securing our "borders".
The way I read it, if my state doesn’t play along, I can’t get on a plane after May 11?
It ought to be postponed forever.
Yep, that ought to give them enough time to move in more illegals to throw away the elections.
“The way I read it, if my state doesnt play along, I cant get on a plane after May 11?”
That is what it says in the excerpt, but you will be able to use your passport.
Something a few steps beyond stupid is going on.
Never underestimate the stupidity of government. That was my tagline on here back in 05.
You’ll need a passport or a “higher-level” security screening on site.
“you will be able to use your passport”
I don’t have passport. I guess I am a second class citizen.
You think the Patriot Act got people upset? If this goes into effect on May 11 of this year, we can thank Bush for single handedly electing a Democrat to every open political office next November.

I can’t help but wonder if Claire is half wrong.
Whether you agree or disagree with this act, you got to kinda chuckle that the the gov is postponing till 2017 a law that was written in response to a terror event in 2001.
Geeez, 16 years. That’s what I call responsive gov’t.
BTW, it was never about terror, but about controlling the populace.
Looks like the states need to get their acts together, and challange the law, constitutionally.
Something tells me that the feds are out of line on this one.
“BTW, it was never about terror, but about controlling the populace.”
More people need to “see” this.
“It ought to be postponed forever.”
5 years? Won’t need the ID’s. They’ll have retina scans in place by then.
So, precisely what identification WILL be legal for folks from these states???
