GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.
"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

Or manager of the Ron Paul campaign.
Okay, shut it down, do not bring them back here, let them go.
The US has not the leadership or gumption left to fight and win.
Save us, at least, having to pay for trials and the fear of having these animals in our midst.
One has to admit, this has been a PR victory for the the bleeding heart MSM and their European allies.
Wow , I am surprised. This makes Huckabee look good.
That’s right, let US policy be dictated by that tiny sliver of the world’s population represented by the Socialist/gay media.
Brilliant leadership.

You got that right.
Wrong. It makes Mullen look bad.
Bringing them to the US does not mean they will have any more rights than they do at Gitmo. Gitmo is US soil and US laws apply there just as much as they would at a military base here. The Supreme Court already ruled that Gitmo detainees are protected by the Geneva Convention despite not being real soldiers or representing any signatory to the convention. Keeping detainees in Gitmo does not in any way keep them out of the reach of the US legal system, and bringing them here does not mean they would get trials. Therefore Gitmo serves no real purpose. It’s purely symbolic.
Huckabee looks worse every day.
With this kind of PC thinking coming from the top, our goose is cooked in this war.
Cooked.
How about the Admiral pay attention to Naval matters and let the elected officials sort out the Nation’s “image”?
Bring back a real officer: General Peter Pace, USMC. Pitch that swab jockey off the poop-deck.
They ought to be making the place bigger.
So Adm. Mike Mullen is a Huckabee man. LOL
Its' placement makes rescue attempts very hard.
Adm. Mullen is a desk jockey.
He’s not a field commander.
Uh, did it ever occur to you that many of us DO NOT want battlefield terrorists brought on to US soil?
Bet you do not even care.
Elect MIkey. He will set them free and probably give them amnesty to boot!
You make me sick. Go join the Democrats.
WEINIE!!! Whata WEINIE!!
no it is leased from cuba
This guy should step down.
If Mullen is calling for his colleagues in Quantanamo to be released, then they should be moved to his home where his family can take care of them. I wonder if Mrs. Mullen knows how to prepare food for their strict religious diet?
This a political decision, not a military decision. He should keep his mouth shut.
As a retired Naval officer, I keep abreast of Navy policies. Mullen decision’s are based on politics and he is not a warrior like the former chairman, Gen. Pace
Now we have a politically-correct wimp as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. When does the plague of locusts arrive?
Dumbocrat lawyers are just waiting for this to happen so they can get access to these poor terrorists who are opressed and tortured by the evil United States. Anyone who says otherwise, is probably too stupid to vote.
Too good, I was wondering the same!
When Mike Huckabee is the republican nominee, you are welcome to vote for Hillary. I will be voting Republican.
I sure don’t want those bums in American territory. If they can offload them to another country, that would be okay. But where?
Even in Gitmo they have access to lawyers. Like a said Gitmo serves no real purpose at all.
That's just plain not true.
I will vote for whomever is most fit and trustworthy to be POTUS.
That, my friend would not be Huckybee, Hillary, Obama, McCain, ROOTY etc. Only two. Hunter or Thompson.
By the way, you still make me sick.
We have secret CIA prisons all over the world. CLUB GITMO is nothing but a show for the media.
They don’t have as many legal rights in Gitmo. but the truth is German POWs were kept in the United States during WWII, and weren’t assigned ACLU lawyers.
You belong in the center ring of a circus, NOT on a conservative, pro-war website. You clown!
Close it, but hang 'em all first.
Who authorized the admiral to give an interview, especially one in which he took it upon himself to make such a suggestion? Do officers actually have such freedom in today’s military?
On the other hand he may only be following the wishes of the Commander and Chief.
Have you had your Metamucil today? just kidding . .
Bush had a great Chief of Staff, Peter Pace, but he bowed to the Democrats and retired him for doing his job and speaking his mind.
Then he put in Mike Mullen, a timeserver, to further please the Democrats.
Now we see what appeasing the Democrats inevitably leads to.
Can you give the locations of a few of them?
Did he clear that with the CIC?
No, but I bet you have been snorting your cocaine all day...oh, wait a minute, you are the guy who private FReepmails to tell people Rush is a drug addict.
Am I right barryg?
“Hes not a field commander.”
He was, for a long time.
As a junior officer, he served in various leadership positions aboard USS Collett (DD-730), USS Blandy (DD-943), USS Fox (CG-33) and USS Sterrett (CG-31). He has commanded three ships: the gasoline tanker USS Noxubee (AOG-56), the guided missile destroyer USS Goldsborough (DDG-20), and the guided missile cruiser USS Yorktown (CG-48); and has also commanded Cruiser-Destroyer Group Two and the George Washington Battle Group. Mullens last command at sea was as Commander, U.S. Second Fleet/Commander, NATO Striking Fleet Atlantic (COMSTRIKFLTLANT).
HUCK A LIB is really an antiamerican dem so?
That’s more and more obvious.
Seen from Europe GITMO looks like a pretty good place for a bunch of rabid islamo-terrorists!
What’s wrong with you HUCK A BEE ?
Have you some better ideas or just trying to bring up the moveon agenda
Bush acknowledges Guantanamo damages US image

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush acknowledged on Wednesday that the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where three detainees committed suicide, has damaged the U.S. image abroad and said it should be shut down. But he said a plan for relocating the prisoners was needed first and he also was awaiting a Supreme Court decision about the forum for handling detainee cases.
not news
They need to change their headline. We are not closing Guantanamo. We are considering closing a prison on the naval base.
It has been an enormously successful international progaganda campaign by the left to demonize Gitmo and the USA over the detentions of TERRORISTS who have to be kept somewhere if we’re not allowed to execute the scumbags. Of course, our policy from the start should have been executions of illegal combatants aka terrorists.
What Adm. Mullen and Secy. Gates (who has also made a similar statement) fail to understand is that closing Gitmo will not be the end but merely one step along the way in the propaganda campaigns against America. Unless you are planning to release these 350 or so terrorists (horrible idea), they have to be kept somewhere (since the liberals and RINOs will not allow them to be executed), so it will merely open whole new cans of worms, er, vermin, wherever they are moved next. If you distribute them in domestic military or civilian prisons you just introduce large new avenues for leftist propaganda and agitation. Every site that holds any of these vermin will become subject to the renewed propaganda wars against us. Allow them onto domestic US soil and watch the lawyerly hordes of leftist sycophants go wild trying to “represent” them and agitate on their behalf.
I said at the time, we never should have brought them to Gitmo, I predicted all of this only I thought the agitation and propaganda would be even worse than it has been. We should have kept them in the region, maybe building a prison in some remote part of Afghanistan for a fraction of what Gitmo cost anyway..... or we should have built a prison someplace really remote like Diego Garcia (if we could buy it from the Brits first, not have a Labor Govt. control our policies), or maybe converted a large transport ship into a prison ship and kept it stationed off Diego Garcia or some other obscure place inacessible to leftist lawyers. There still would have been plenty of leftist propaganda, but it would not have attracted nearly the same attention as having the terrorists at a US base in the Carribean.
A good number of terrorists released from Gitmo have returned to terrorism, so we have enabled the deaths of many more civilians and US troops by succumbing to the pressures of leftist morons. How many more have to die unnecessarily to please the politically correct legions of the left?
Wow, that Bush is a moveon liberal ain’t he? W. should just resign right now, huh? LOL!
