Oral history: The Monica Lewinsky scandal ten years on
TimesOnline ^ | 15 Jan 2008 | Damian Whitworth

On the evening of Saturday January 17, 1998, the internet gossip merchant Matt Drudge posted a story that opened the most sensational scandal season in the history of the American presidency. He reported that Newsweek magazine had killed a story about President Clinton’s sexual relationship with a former intern. The next day he had her name: Monica Lewinsky.

The mainstream media were slow to catch up, but by the following Tuesday they were reporting that Clinton was being investigated for encouraging others to lie to cover up the affair.

For the next year the story dominated the headlines as Clinton was investigated, impeached and eventually found not guilty of high crimes and misdemeanours in a Senate trial.

Ten years on we know what happened to Bill Clinton. He is campaigning tirelessly for his wife as she seeks to win the second Clinton presidency. It is a curious twist of fate, and an indication of how deep were the repercussions of the scandal, that her campaign might not be happening if it weren’t for Monica Lewinsky.

For it was in the wake of the scandal, in which Hillary was seen as the wronged wife, that she decided to run for the Senate from New York. Her shamed husband, anxious to try to make things up to her, eagerly threw his weight behind the move. A wave of sympathy helped to sweep her to victory. As soon as she was elected, talk began about her running for president.

But what of the other dramatis personae from that sorry saga? Newt Gingrich, the Republican Speaker of the House, resigned when voters expressed their disapproval at the impeachment drive. Two years later, though, scandal fatigue severely complicated Al Gore’s presidential campaign.

The MSM trying to kick up a little sympathy for the devil.
The crying worked. The 'hecklers' worked.

The Monica Lewsinsky aspect of the Paula Jones lawsuit showed the way the Clinton damage control team operated.

This is the saddest aspect to the whole Clinton saga. Ten years after he was impeached, most of the country still believes it was because "he had an affair with an intern."

He was not impeached for an affair with an intern.

He was impeached because Paula Jones had filed a sexual harrassment suit against him, and he and his people intimdated them, got others to lie for him, defamed good people (including Kenneth Starr), and introduced the term "oral sex" into the mainstream.

I think Linda Tripp and Lucianne Goldberg saved Monica’s life. If they hadn’t urged Monica to save the dress, Monica would be dead now.

They intimidated those who might speak out. They savaged the character of Linda Tripp. And Bill Clinton lied under oath.

Agreed, these are the two things that bug me most about it all.
1. Linda Tripp was the only “hero” in this mess, but because of a bad hairdo and lipstick, etc. even those who should have spoke out for her snickered instead. She was trashed for simply doing the right thing and refusing to lie. Monica should have been trashed for asking a friend to lie. Instead Monica was made to look like a victim because the president was having sex with her.
2. This one in more hindsight; the republicans totally mishandled things from the start. They/we assumed the POTUS would resign instead of trashing the office if the truth came out about sex with a young lady. Since he didn’t resign his claims of it being all about sex were bolstered. In hindsight the obstruction of justice angle should have been the only thing talked about. We should have taken the all about sex angle away from the start and said ourselves that what he did sexually was his business, but obstruction of justice was a crime warranting removal from office.

Newt Gingrich, the Republican Speaker of the House, resigned when voters expressed their disapproval at the impeachment drive.

Is this the revisionist historical take on Newt?

I thought he resigned because Republicans lost seats in the election for not convicting Clinton.

I wonder if she ever got the dress back? It would probably sell for quite a bit on eBay.
