USA Weekend printed an excerpt from this list. However, the source of the article is Netlingo.com. And the fuuny (Sad, really) thing is that the ones that are listed in USA Weekend are probably the only ones on the list suitable for a family publication, so check out that list.

The ones that get me are the numbers.
Okay, I know what 420 is, and I can figure that 182 is I hate you because "eight two" rhymes with "hate you".
However, can someone explain the source of 143 and 459 as meaning "I love you"?

I don’t know about these, but when I’m in a store and the clerk asks for my zip code, I tell them 90210 which rhymes with ‘No. Don’t Want You To Know’. Some get it. Most don’t.

Not sure about the "143" but on a phone keypad, "I-L-Y" is "459"

143 represents letter count.

“I” - 1 letter

“Love” - 4 letters

“You” - 3 letters

459 on a telephone keypad is ILY.

That reminds me of something Petronski said a long time back (about Radio Shack, I think). Didn't you go in there and when the clerk asked for your phone number you said "555-5555" and then, shocked, the salesperson replied "REALLY?!" and you shot back "Yep" or something like that?!

143...
If you type <3, that’s a heart, so I’m sure the 1 means “I” and the 4 is easier to text on a phone than a <, so there’s the angle needed to complete the heart.

....On a similar note, I find I have to visit Urban Dictionary.com a lot to figure out some of the teens’ lingo. Usually the word is harmless but some make you blush.

“I love you”=143=the number of letters in the phrase

Not a new concept.

From Wikipedia article on Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse, south of Boston, Mass:

On May 1, 1894, a new flashing lantern was installed, with the characteristic of a one-four-three flash, which lovers on shore soon found contained the same numerical count as the words “I love you.” Minots Ledge has thus become known up and down the coast as the “Lover’s Light.”

IIRC, 143 meaning “I love you” comes from the number of letters in each word, and came to common knowledge via Nick & Danielle, a couple of the last installment of Big Brother.

“However, can someone explain the source of 143 and 459 as meaning “I love you”?”

I think the 143 is based on this:

I = 1 letter
love = 4 letters
you = 3 letters
