Another Scruggs Case

The Dickie Scruggs bribery case keeps getting curiouser, with yesterday's news that even the tort baron's former defense attorney has copped a federal plea.

Mr. Scruggs was indicted in November along with his son and three other lawyers for conspiring to bribe Mississippi Judge Henry Lackey. Two of the defendants have already pled guilty and are cooperating with the feds. And according to court papers released yesterday, Joey Langston, who had until recently represented Mr. Scruggs, has now pled guilty to conspiring with Mr. Scruggs in a scheme to influence a different judge in a separate case.

According to the indictment, sometime in 2006 or early 2007 Mr. Scruggs told Mr. Langston that "he could arrange for [Judge] DeLaughter to be considered for a [federal] appointment" and said Mr. Langston should have that information conveyed to the judge. How Mr. Scruggs was intending to help Judge DeLaughter isn't clear, but it has escaped no one that Mr. Scruggs's brother-in-law is Senator Trent Lott.

Lott's sudden resignation immediately preceded the charges against brother-in-law Dickie.

And a pol like Trent Lott isn't going to walk away from the gravy train unless he's got a very good reason...

Apparently the cheerleader did not put DeLaughter up for a federal judgeship. He put someone else up for it, and that someone was approved. But I don’t know if the other judge wasn’t another pawn of Scruggs.

Langston is getting away with a lot with his guilty plea. He is also in on several other high profile cases and he gets immunity from any further prosecution with this guilty plea. The buzz from his neighbors is that he won’t get hurt monetarily. Farese is in on this too....Both are within a 20-30 minute drive from here and many of their employees are clients here.

1994 Case where they tried to bribe Judge DeLaughter for a favorable ruling in the asbestos case. Note the connection between Hood, DeLaughter and all of the ones involved with Scruggs. Langston is represented by Farese...
