Thanks for this insight.

News anchors are not journalists but actors—chosen for their looks, broadcast voice and “personality”—who read a script someone else has written in front of a camera.

i don’t think that it’s a requirement for anchors to carry a mensa membership card. just the ability to read text and apply foundation. :)

I watched this this morning and think the picture they had of her on Drudge was not representative of the clip. Katie came across as amusing and got along well with her staff- that said... she still give me a migraine. The clip also goes to show how “talking heads” are really just that “talking heads.”

“Well, when you are “perky”, ignorance is ok. ;-)”

And another thing in her favor: Back in her glory days on the TODAY Show, she was really slick at putting a condom on a cucumber. What a lady!

Geez ... I thought you could place Katie in Sid Blumenthals rental car when he was pulled over and arrested on a aggravated DUI charge at 0130 on the Monday prior to the Tuesday NH primary. That would explain the media blackout on the incident.

Yeah, she had trouble with it twice. This was the real Katie--not nearly as "bright" as she likes to be viewed when on-camera.

Why does she always act like a perpetual pre-teen, stuck in that stage of emotional development?

She and it are tiresome.

I remember that. I specifically remember her slamming something down on the desk and saying “I thought Gore already won, this isn’t right!!!”

Why should she know anything? That's not her job. Her job is to look good, speak clearly, and anchor the news(toss it off to field reporters, narrate transitions, etc.

I know it's easy sport to harp on Couric. I'm no fan. But this is just silly.

Dan Rather is the classic example. Wikepedia (Free Republic mentioned):

On September 8, 2004, Rather reported on 60 Minutes Wednesday that a series of memos critical of President George W. Bush’s Texas Air National Guard service record had been discovered in the personal files of Lt. Bush’s former commanding officer, Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian. The authenticity of these documents, initially based on their being proportionally printed, was quickly called into question by a small group of conservative bloggers, leading to claims that the memos were forgeries. The accusations then spread over the following days into mainstream media outlets including The Washington Post, The New York Times[6], and the Chicago Sun-Times.

Rather and CBS initially defended the story, insisting that the documents had been authenticated by experts. CBS was contradicted by some of the experts it originally cited, of the four experts they claimed, they all retracted later. CBS later reported that their source for the documents, former Texas Army National Guard officer Lt. Col. Bill Burkett, had misled the network about how he had obtained them.

On September 20, CBS retracted the story. Rather stated, “if I knew then what I know now, I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.”The controversy has been referred to by some as “Memogate” and “Rathergate.”

Following an investigation commissioned by CBS, CBS fired story producer Mary Mapes and asked three other producers connected with the story to resign. Many believe Rather’s retirement was hastened by this incident. (Mapes had been in contact with the Kerry Campaign during preparation of the story and gave them copies of the fabricated documents.)

Conservative blog sites, especially the Free Republic and Little Green Footballs, widely believe and have repeatedly claimed that the documents are forgeries that were created in Microsoft Word and then repeatedly photocopied or faxed to make them look aged. On Thursday, September 20, 2007, Rather was interviewed on Larry King Live commenting “Nobody has proved that they were fraudulent, much less a forgery. ... The truth of this story stands up to this day.”

And she obviously wanted to add "dramatic" to have the ADDED INTEREST element in *her* as the reader.

Yeah, Katie, it's all about you. Right. Think highly of yourself much?

From 45 years of TV news experience, I can tell you that this is very normal. That is very good... and very bad.

First, the good. Despite a heavy cold, she is relaxed, having fun with the staff, not a prima-donna. If you, the anchor, are having “fun” so are the viewers, and that is good.

The bad. She obviously does not know or understand the most basic elements of the story, the WSTVC (Why Should The Viewers Care) the backstory, the "whatsnext," or even any understanding of the whole process. She does not even know the simple facts, such as dates.

Peter Jennings would have been very briefed before the show started. With a few updates from the results desk, he could have gone on for six hours hours.... without repeating himself.

Want to see how good it can be? Watch the tape of Jim McKay, a sportscaster (!), doing the ONLY live coverage of the Munich Olympic massacre. Watch Jennings on 9/11 or Challenger. Watch any of us on Nov 22, 63. Watch my old Gulf of Tonkin tapes (only guy on air at 2:00 AM, with every other reporter drunk after the close of 64 Republican Convention.) We were good. She is a talking head ditz.

“I remember that. I specifically remember her slamming something down on the desk and saying “I thought Gore already won, this isn’t right!!!”

Well, that’s not what I recall at all. It was more of a lot of sulking, pouting, head shaking, and refusing to even discuss that Bush was winning the state.

I know it's easy sport to harp on Couric. I'm no fan. But this is just silly.

Obviously what you say is true in the clinical sense of her job. It's not that this isn't stating the obvious reality of her job but at the same time someone that reads thew news should KEEP UP with the news. I don't care if it is understood that an anchor doesn't need to - I think it is imperative that the anchor goes in with a basic sense of the story they are going to cover live. I dare say (while throwing-up in my mouth) that Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw and, yes, even Dan Rather would have relatively up to speed on the general story.

Also - whether you believe it or not - many people on this forum have not necessarily seen such an extensive collection of behing-the-scenes moments by a "biggie" anchor. It is illuminating on a variety of levels. So you found it boring and a waste of time - fine. Now could you prove how useless this whole excercise apparently was and ignore the thread, Sport?

Ah well, listen. I saw the drudge link. I watched some of the video. I saw it posted here and commented on it. Nothing personal. Just stating my opinion. It's a slow night. Sorry.
