The voice of America's anti-hunting forces is trying to become more powerful.
In what the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance is calling a "precisely-calculated effort," the Humane Society of the United States is attempting to consolidate all of the animal rights movement's political power under a single umbrella.
Humane Society director Wayne Pacelle reportedly told one publication that his organization may soon merge with at least three unnamed animal rights organizations.
"The HSUS is playing up a mainstream reputation in hopes of becoming the primary mouthpiece for the animal rights movement," said Bud Pidgeon, president of the Sportsmen's Alliance. "It is not difficult to convince a smaller group to unite with a multimillion dollar organization that will push its political agenda, be it to end hunting or eliminate animal research.
"Sportsmen will no doubt see HSUS continue to grow in this way."
The Humane Society previously absorbed the Fund for Animals in 2005 and the Doris Day Animal League in 2006. It has 10.5 million members or supporters -- 3.1 million more than it had just five years ago.
The group has an annual budget of $112 million, some of which it used -- for the first time ever last year -- to back or oppose candidates for public office based on their animal-related voting history.
Young hunters
If there's some good news for hunters -- albeit mixed good news -- it's that they are getting a little boost from youngsters.
According to new data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the ratio of hunters ages 6 to 15 has grown almost 4 percent since 2001. In that year, 10.9 percent of hunters were between 6 and 15 years old. In 2006, though, that had jumped to 11.3 percent.
That's significant because hunting was the only one of the...

Everywhere you turn these days there’s some sanctimonious busybody SOB that can’t mind his own business. I swear, life in this country is beginning to really suck.
I used to work for the Humane Society in Garland, Texas. They do wonderful things for domestic animals by giving them second chances at new homes, free or low-cost spay-neuter programs and vaccine clinics for people on limited budgets, and helping animals who might otherwise die due to neglect, starvation and disease.
So, that being said, how can an organization devoted to the welfare of animals be so ignorant to the real impact of over-population of wildlife?
Their environments are shrinking so much that to NOT control their numbers causes the most inhumane circumstances imaginable.
The Humane Society needs to keep taking care of dogs and cats, and leave the wildlife issues in the capable hands of state environmental agencies who know wtf they are doing.
When people are faced with the real inconveniences of starving wildlife, from deer eating their gardens to hungry bears stealing their garbage cans, they call for help which as often as not results in an animal being destroyed anyway.
I agree. The Humane Society here in the KC area is great at pet rescue. They should stick with what they are good at. It sounds like they elected a nut job to run their big show though.
They aren't. This is the standard leftist tactic. Find an organization with a good reputation in the area you want to influence. Get "your people" into the organization leadership. Vote out any other leadership members who disagree with your agenda. Voila---the organization has been "realigned" from working charity to propaganda machine component.
The HSUS is not affiliated with your local humane society. The HSUS is a leftist cult dedicated to banning hunting, meat eating and pet ownership.
As noted by Wonder Warthog, HSUS is engaged in massive deception, and many people give these kooks money thinking they are helping puppies and kittens.
HSUS does not run a single shelter for animals, nor has it saved a single dog or cat. And naturally, the scum Marxist media refuses to report the deception.
Give to your local animal shelter but avoid these Marxists at HSUS and spread the word.
What you should do if you want to see the great tradition of hunting continue is simple enough:
Join the NRA. Join Safari Club International (SCI).
Last, but not least, hunt every chance you get and take young people! =:-D
As I understand this, our local Humane Society organizations aren’t involved. It is the National Humane Society that is becoming animal rights crazy and anti-hunting.
Excuse me, I meant the Humane Society of the United States, the HSUS. I see someone has already posted that - good!
And what are those political activities? The president of the HSUS, Wayne Pacelle, has admitted that he favors a petless, meatless society. All recreational uses of animals, including hunting, horseback riding, coursing, and showing, would gradually be eliminated under the guidelines of the HSUS. Like all leftist organizations, exists to increase its own power, so they favor legislation that permits their representatives to come onto your property and inspect your home kennel and your horses. HSUS is in league with Animal Liberation Front and PETA.
HSUS is dangerous! Don't give them a cent!
As other have said the HSUS is not your local humane society. It is a PETA type organization. Unfortunately because they trade on the name “humane society” they fool (with the help of the MSM) animal lovers into giving them money thinking they are helping shelter animals. This tactic should be illegal.
New year, don’t forget to buy your hunting/fishing licenses early.
I always buy the Oregon Sportsmans license which includes all kinds of tags including salmon, halibut & sturgeon.
That way if I’m driving down the road and a halibut jumps out in front of me I can legally harvest it.
“Unfortunately because they trade on the name humane society they fool (with the help of the MSM) animal lovers into giving them money thinking they are helping shelter animals. This tactic should be illegal.”
We can’t depend on the lazy liberal MSM to inform us. When confronted with giving to charitable organizations, we need to do our own research to find out who we are giving to. Getting the info out on forums such as this is a good way to do it.
We the people have to depend on each other. We can no longer depend on the media establishments.
“The group has an annual budget of $112 million, some of which it used — to back or oppose candidates for public office”
Rick Santorum was one of those candidates and it was a reason he lost his senate seat. Many Pennsylvanians have dogs, hunt with dogs and/or make all or some of their income raising farm animals. Unfortunately, NAIS passed before he was dumped.
No doubt the MSM is lazy but I also don’t doubt they mean to misinform. It seems most newswire stories automatically get a HSUS quote whenever they have an animal in the news story.
You’re right it’s up to us to fight back in whatever forum we can but realize there are animal rights gatekeepers in a lot of places trying to stop it. I’ve gotten through sometimes and actually changed some minds. It’s worth the effort.
Also, consider joining the US Sportsmen’s Association, which fights for the rights of hunters, anglers, hound-owners, and horsemen. Local organizations like the Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance and the Masters of Foxhounds Association also do excellent work. God bless them all.
