BREAKING NEWS: MAF Exposes New York Times for Erroneous ‘Killer Vet’ Report
http://www.moveamericaforward.org/index.php/MAF/MAFNews ^

Posted on 01/17/2008 12:44:39 PM PST by chessplayer

The Times documentation of 121 potential killings out of more than 1.5 million veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq) and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), divided by 6 years of conflict results in a murder rate of just 1.34 incidents per 100,000 veterans per year.

Since all but one of the veterans cited by the Times who committed a killing in the U.S. was male, the comparable rate is approximately 7.67 incidents of murder per 100,000 people among the general male population, compared to just 1.34 incidents per 100,000 returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans (of both genders).

It must have many, many hours of research for the NYT to gather that statistic. Comparing that to the baseline of overall murder rates would have taken minutes.

But that would have disproven the conclusion of the story.

Research method:

1. Develop conclusion.
2. Gather data.
3. Ignore data that doesn't prove conclusion.

That’s pretty much it. Write the story, and fit the “facts” to prove the story. However, I see a pearl of hope here. Since the homicide rate for returning vets is much lower than the general population, we need to send EVERYONE to Iraq and that way, we will get the homicide rate of the general public DOWN to the rate of the returning veterans. (Take THAT NY Times)

Remember the NYT tag line...”Do not let a little thing like facts get in the way fo a good story.”

I think you give the Times too much credit for work they would never consider doing. This is the way I believe they do research.

1. Stumble upon a research report.
2. Develop a left leaning opinion of that reports conclusions.
3. Write an article that totally misrepresents the data and supports the preconceived leftist opinion already in the writer’s mind.

In year 2002 we Freepers called into Sen. JOHN McCAIN’s Senate Office asking the Senator to not support Sen. JOHN KERRY’s blocking the already House-passed Vietnam Human Rights Bill.

We were told, directly, that Senator JOHN McCAIN supported his friend Sen. JOHN KERRY’s blocking of that same Vietnam Human Rights Bill.

Today RUSH LIMBAUGH read a news story about ROSS PEROT’s take on JOHN McCAIN.

A very POW-Issue involved ROSS PEROT was asked to take care of a then POW JOHN McCAIN’s wife, after she had been injured in an auto accident. He did just that.

When a limping JOHN McCAIN was freed from captivity and came home to an also limping wife ..he ended up divorcing her in favor of marrying the present and very rich CINDY McCAIN.

Which gave JOHN McCAIN a financial base to run for national elective office with.

.

The left and MSM have been trying for years to make Iraq a re-run of Vietnam. Just as with Vietnam they are trying to convince the public we've lost, ignoring the truth of success on the battlefield. And they're trying to create a new false myth of the crazed war veteran.

They are just disgusting.

I`d certainly never vote for McCain but I`ve always cut him some slack for what he went through in VN at the hands of those sadistic Cong captors.

The left have certainly been consistant in their hatred of our military.

Those stats are of newspapers sold. The readership of the paper is considerably higher. Added to that is the on-line readers and the readers of NYT articles that are reprinted by newspapers across the Country and around the world. Their impact and influence is still very powerful.

The numbers don’t make sense. The rate is 8.07 per 100,000 over the 6 years. This rate would be the average of the 6 annual rates...not a cummulative total. So they shouldn’t be dividing by 6 to get 1.34 per 100,000.

What am I missing?

I appreciate your reverance for one who had to suffer captivity because of his having fought for the Freedom of others.

But the only ones I can give any slack to are the ones who were once Free, but who now have to suffer the daily captivity of living under Communist domination...
...with no hope breaking its stranglehold on them.

Having myself fought for the Freedom of others, I truly resent those here in America that still refuse to hold Communist Vietnam accountable for its denial of human rights within its own borders.

People like:

HILLARY RODHAM
BILL CLINTON
JOHN KERRY
TED KENNEDY

& one JOHN McCAIN

Thus, not one of them should ever be put in charge of protecting our own Freedom here in time of war..?

So, if one looks at the numbers, it appears a Times reporter is more likely to be dismissed for fraud or plagerism that a returning vet is to commit murder once returning home.
