Before entering Missouri, Jayhawks beware.
A Missouri senator has introduced a bill to make the Kansas Jayhawk the official game bird of the state of Missouri.
Whats a game bird, you might ask? Its the official bird to be hunted throughout the state. A Jayhawk, remember, is a mythical creature.
Jeeze, I really dont know what to say to that, said KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony when told of the legislation. I dont know whether to be proud, afraid or outraged.
The bill was introduced Thursday afternoon by Sen. Dan Clemens, a Republican from Marshfield, Mo., just two days before the Jayhawks and the Tigers meet on the basketball court. Clemens, who holds two degrees from the University of Missouri, couldnt be reached for comment Thursday night.
While the legislation may seem a bit harsh, one Jayhawk fan said he wasnt the least bit surprised Missourians would stoop to such a level.
People criticize me a lot because I get after them a lot, said former KU football coach Don Fambrough, an outspoken critic of all things Missouri. But they justify that. Theyre not very nice people to start with. As long as Ive been here, I could tell you a list of things like this theyve done over the years.
But Fambrough has a suggestion. Im going to recommend that our people make the Tiger our most wanted. I have no love for those people.
If the Jayhawk were to become the state game bird, it would replace the bobwhite quail, which was selected as the state game bird last year. The KU-MU game is 7 p.m. Saturday on ESPNU, Sunflower Broadband Channel 141.
The bill is No. 971.
I mean Longhorns and Aggies wouldn't even do this to each other.
A Knasas Jayhawk is either one of the team mascots or a fan. There is no such bird as a Kansas Jayhawk.

Glad to see all the problems in Missouri have been solved so that elected officials can focus on things like this.
Ping!
I look at it as a good thing. Whenever government tries to "solve" problems they end up making things worse. If only the US Congress would start debating such trivial issues.
Here’s a sample email:
Senator Clemens,
I just found reference to Senate bill 971 http://www.senate.mo.gov/08info/pdf-bill/no%20watermark/intro/sb971.pdf to replace the state gaming bird of bobwhite quail to Kansas Jayhawk.
Im assuming your intentions were to promote state or school pride but I find your actions to be in very poor taste, a waste of taxpayer time and dangerous. As there is no such bird as a Jayhawk, and by the definition of gaming you are promoting a violent atmosphere if not direct actions towards innocent people.
I do live in Kansas but as I have only moved here several months ago I do not carry a bias towards Missouri. However, your behavior sure makes my understand those who do have one.
I believe that the respectable thing for you to do would be to withdraw your proposed bill 971 and issue an apology to the people who are Kansas Jayhawks.
Respectfully,
Yes and no. The less Congress does the better. States; however, are responsible for their citizens. That is if you believe in Federalism.
Hahahaha! I love it.
As a man who was born and raised in western Missouri, I can tell you that even today Kansans and Missourians don’t always see eye-to-eye.
We don’t routinely shoot at each other anymore (routinely mind you) and it’s been a little while since the last border raids were carried out, but every once and a while something comes up that reminds you that these states were settled by very different people.
Hmmm... The pic showed up when I previewed it. Anyway, it was a picture of one of those giant, prehistoric, flightless birds (that looked a lot like a Jayhawk) feeding on something that looked like an ancestor of the horse. It was one of the dominant predators in N. America before wolves crossed the Alaskan land bridge and put an end to its reign of terror.
Go Tigers!!!
While they’re at it they can name the “Warm Booger” the official state dessert.

A long time ago, the Iowa Dept. of Ag listed the wild sunflower, for good reason, on its noxious weeds list. Those silly Jayhawks got their panties in such a twist over their state flower being called a noxious weed that they retaliated by naming the wild rose, Iowa’s flower, a noxious weed in Kansas.
the aggies and lonhorn rivalry doesn’t even compare to the kansas vs missouri hatred. first battle.... missouri 186...kansas 0. long live quantrill. don’t forget to send out you william quantrill appreciation day cards on august 21st.
Can you please explain your admiration of william quantrill?
“long live quantrill. dont forget to send out you william quantrill appreciation day cards on august 21st.”
As a Kansas State Wildcat, I’m not sure I see a problem here.
Lawrence was burned to the ground on my birthday (not year)?
