Is Negro a Bad Word? UNCF's Big Decision
Diversityinc.com ^ | January 17, 2008 | Eric Hinton

... It's an issue the United Negro College Fund is addressing today … sort of. The 64-year-old organization isn't officially removing "Negro" from its name but rather is unveiling a new branding effort that will focus on the acronym "UNCF." A new logo was unveiled today and the group is refocusing attention to the group's universal catchphrase, "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste."

( ... )

By refocusing attention to the acronym, the UNCF follows the lead of the American Association of Retired Persons, which in 1999 legally changed its name to AARP to reflect that its focus had expanded beyond that of just American retirees and to capture more aging baby boomers.

The notion of making a name change for groups such as the NAACP and UNCF are more than simply symbolic. These organizations are seeking to remain relevant and urgently need to attract younger members.

Last year, DiversityInc posed a question to its readers: "Should the NAACP Change its Name?" Responses ran the gamut from readers who said the name had "historical significance" to "the NAACP has remained in a time zone of the '60's" to "It's not the name, it's the direction the organization is going in."

Today, the term “colored people” is considered offensive while “people of color” is considered sensitive.

So it's settled then..."NAACP" will hereafter change its name to "NAAPC".

Negro is sort of a 50’s expression, they need to move into the 70’s and call themselves the United Afro-American College Fund, then in twenty years they can call themselves the Black College Fund and then in 20 more years............

“Rearranging the deck chairs?”
.....I think so....in my area the public black colleges are being “integrated” by whites/Asians/Hispanics....the private black ones have money problems....the days of the purely all Negro college are fading....plus people are questioning the need....example: several years ago the need for a University of Washington,DC law school was raised....there are already 90,000 lawyers(not a typo)in Washington plus there are already 5 law schools there cranking out a fresh crop of attorneys every May...so why is another law school needed just for blacks?

Eons ago in the world of Drafting (aka, before CAD), 'Negro' was a color name of an ink - aka black.

And a "jig" was a fixture for holding parts during manufacture and "dikes" were diagonal cutters (pliers), and an "RCH" was...oops, better not go there. Our PC world has sure messed up our language.

The Chevy Chase/Richard Prior “Word Association” video would be posted here, if it weren’t deleted from every site due to it’s “insensitive” content.

Lighten up America!

I have several liberal acquaintances (I live in NJ) and when with them and the subject of minorities (blacks) comes up I NEVER refer to them as blacks but Negroes or colored people. It drives these people absolutely NUTS.

Kinky Friedman drew the wrath of the PC types for using the word "negro" while running for governor.

Isn't this the same thing Kentucky Fried Chicken did to distance itself from the bad perception that people have of fried foods?

Last I checked KFC still actually fries chicken...

I will say that I do not like seeing the terms black or white used to label a person (as in “blacks” or “whites”). They can be referred to as “black people” or “white people” but they are beyond just a color.

“The Chevy Chase/Richard Prior “Word Association” video”

...I remember that skit; I saw them do it...jeeze, if SNL were to do one like that today the FCC would pull them off the air....and you know the funny thing?....back then guys like Pryor and Flip Wilson had huge white audiances.....I don’t think there’s a black comedian today that’s as popular with the whole country.
