WASHINGTON - U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man carrying a rifle outside the Capitol building Friday, authorities said.

The man was in custody and no one was injured, police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

An officer first spotted the man near Union Station, about two blocks from the Capitol. A car belonging to the suspect was being searched.

About 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man carrying a shotgun as he walked south on 1st Street, NW. Investigators say the man was openly carrying the weapon as he walked down the street. Officers drew their weapons and confronted the man; no shots were fired.

Investigators say they searched the man’s vehicle, which was found parked on North Capitol Street near D Street. Capitol Police say officers found “items of concern” in the pickup truck.

Police only described the suspect as an adult white male.

Police established a large perimeter around the scene. Investigators say it will be in place for some time
