Transcript of Mitt Romney Interview on 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' on Jan. 18, 2008.
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 18, 2008

Posted on 01/19/2008 12:08:13 AM PST by Romneyfor President2008

JAY LENO: On Tuesday my first guest won the Michigan primary in the Republican Presidential race. That makes him a real contender in an election that is pretty much anybody's guess at this point. Please welcome Mitt Romney.

(Applause.)

JAY LENO: Thanks for coming. I appreciate your making the trip.

MITT ROMNEY: Thank you. Good to be here.

JAY LENO: And congratulations on Michigan. That was exciting.

MITT ROMNEY: Very exciting for me.

JAY LENO: You got the gold. You almost took the silver. Got the gold.

MITT ROMNEY: I got Wyoming, too; so two golds, two silvers. That's not bad.

JAY LENO: Good. Good. Good. Now, this seems like it's ‑‑ for me it's getting good, but for you guys it's getting nasty. How are you holding up?

MITT ROMNEY: I do fine. You know, I start off the day with a ‑‑ actually with a bowl of granola. My wife makes granola. Before I go on a trip, she gets out the oats and honey and sesame seeds and chops up the almonds. So I take a bowl and have granola in the morning, and then I jog every other day three miles, and then at the end of the day, just to really relax, I take off a dark suit like this and put on a light one.

(Laughter.)

Romney in Heated Exchange with AP Reporter.

http://www.youtube.com/v/15hVj29hH2k&rel=1

Campaign getting a little stressful for you there, Willard? Starting to feel the heat? It’s nice to see this crooked car salesman show his true colours once and a while. If this is the beginning of the end, I can’t wait to see his theatrics as he goes down the flames.

I didn’t see Romney going off at all. In fact, I thought he carried himself professionally. I guess as we continue to go soft in America that exchange becomes an all out war. Sad isn’t it? You should agree with that at least even though you are not a Romney supporter. Plus hard to go down in flames when you have a three state win and two second place wins after Nevada. He is number one and still does not receive the respect he deserves.

"...to say Romney is a conservative you'd have to overlook his support for Roe v Wade and the thousands and thousands of innocent babes his support allowed to be ruthlessly murdered, on his watch, as he stood by and did nothing. Worse than nothing. He led the murderous charge. The man has no morals, no bedrock principles, no convictions, and no conscience. Conviently saying he's changed his mind just in time to run for the presidency doesn't cut it. The man should fall to his knees and beg forgiveness. And if he had any conscience at all, he'd resign from public life.

You'd also have to overlook his support for gay rights, shamnesty, the "assault rifle" ban, his big government we'll solve all your problems nanny-statism, and his love affair with Ted Kennedy.

BTW, conservatives should just say no to RomneyCare. It's not the free-market, private enterprise solution he proudly claims it to be. It's unconstitutional government coercion, force, intrusion, socialism, fascism, totalitarianism and abortionism all rolled into one big government nanny-state boondoggle. He singlehandedly won the war for universal healthcare and government subsidized abortion FOR the DEMOCRATS. He's Clinton, Schumer, Kennedy & Co.'s best friend. A useful idiot...."

LOL, you think that was a heated exchange? Perhaps on the part of the reporter. Romney, the consummate professional handled it with dignity and class, never losing his composure and always with that smile.

Must suck to hate Romney and see him do something this well.

Mitt Romney truly saying that he likes Ted Kennedy and that he’s not at all worried about the rich isn’t helping Mitt with the conservative voters base! Truly lowering the tax burden with everyone from the richest to the poorest helps everyone, and truly lowering the tax burden on the rich also truly helps with the creation of many new jobs all over the U.S.! Mitt also truly needs to be frequently attacked about and frequently questioned about his “RomneyCare Health Care Plan” in Massachusetts which forces many state residences into a government run health care program when most of them probably don’t want to have any part of it in their lives in the first place! (Do the majority of people all over the U.S. truly want similar kinds of “government mandated” health care systems to be created by all fifty states all over the U.S. as well?)

Spend a day or so researching Granpa Fred. You’d be surprised. And the badge of ‘the only true conservative’ does not automatically make him a viable candidate of the Republican party against the Hildabeast or Hussein Obama.

just because some people transfer disagreements into personal hatred doesn’t mean either that it’s a good trait, or that we expect it from our leaders.

Meanwhile, you can worry about the Rich. I’m not worried about the rich people. I figure they have the ability to worry about themselves.

====================================

I don’t like liberals or panderers (or brainwashed cult members) all of which Mitt seems to be, but as much as I hate to admit it I MIGHT be able to plug my nose on election day and drag myself kicking and screaming against my will and go against everything I know and stand for and vote against a Hillary, Obama or whatever if that was the choice, and if I were to do such a thing I would regret it for the rest of my life and smack myself in the face every time I thought about it, and for the rest of my days I would stick my ass out at strangers for them to give me a good swift kick for what I had done.

"You should agree with that at least even though you are not a Romney supporter. "

It's quite astonishing that there is such a degree of visceral hatred for Mitt. No response, no tax cut proposal, no success will suffice.....only his destruction.

This reaction certainly sheds light on human nature and extremism, both here and abroad. No amount of reasonable discourse will satisfy someone with hatred in his heart.

Wouldn’t that have been an easier way of saying it?

When a poster makes a claim about another freeper, you can always ping the other freeper to the post if you have some doubt, as I imagine a freeper would want to refute the claim if it weren’t true.

Or you could send a private e-mail.

Given this is a public forum and you’ve already pinged the other freeper into the thread, I believe the poster, because he’d be a fool to lie about it.

If he’s not banned in the next hour, I think that would be convincing evidence that he was not lying.

oh, and not to be the “posting nanny”, but in general, if you simply quote from another freeper, ANY other freeper, it is common courtesy to ping the freeper to YOUR post, so if people respond to your post, the original author can come if they want and answer the questions.

I don’t know if the particuler person you quoted appreciates that or not.

LOL, it’s actually gotten A LOT better for Romney folks here. Were you here a couple months ago? Everytime someone posted a pro-Romney thread, someone else would put “sixpiecesofsilver” in the keywords. LOL

Unfortunately, one Romney fan did get banned. Must’ve pissed off the wrong Fredhead.

Sure, some people do take politics very seriously and personally. To them, supporting Romney is a direct threat to their personal livelihood and the soul of the nation.

Compared to MCCAIN in 2000 and recently I thought Romney really held his cool. These PMSN and other “drivebys” as Rush calls them have one mission when covering Republicans and that is - Embarrass them and if you can’t embarass them get them angry. Then you have a clip that you can play over and over and over.

Had this clip been shown without negative publicity I would have said what a moron that reporter is - and Mitt handled him as a parent would handle a naughty child that acted out in public.

I think that it should be retitled - “Mitt spanks mean reporter.”

JAY LENO: And what ‑‑ I don't understand. What has happened with Guiliani's campaign? It seemed like he was the frontrunner. It seemed like he had this thing locked up, and yet he doesn't even seem to show up in Massachusetts, or certainly Michigan, he's behind Ron Paul. What is that strategy? Is it all Florida?

MITT ROMNEY: I think the thought was he was going to do well at the very end, and we all encouraged him to follow that strategy: "Let the rest of us go up front, get the visibility, the publicity and the attention, and then you can come in later and clean up." We don't expect that's going to happen, though.

Heh, heh!

Huh? First of all, the idiot reporter has been following him around pestering him for months now. He recently bashed him for his great grand father’s polgomy. Secondly, the moron “reporter” was rude and wrong. An adviser doesn’t run one’s campaign. Mitt responded to his baseless accusation, stated the facts, and put him in his place. The reporter behaved like a child after his BS was corrected.

I see we have some RDS growing on FR, some people can’t be objective.

Do you think there is even a problem with health insurance coverage in America ... that would require any action or 'solution'?

...into a government run health care program ...

Do you mean like MediCare or MediCaid??

Sarcasm aside, my understanding is that the Massachusetts plan simply negotiated with private health insurance companies to offer low-cost "group" plans for the lowest income people who can't afford insurance .....

Then, if that person or family STILL can't afford health insurance, the state government would subsidize (help pay) that family to buy private health insurance.

The plan requires a person to have a basic 'catastrophic' health plan, which cost about $100 a month, or thereabouts. That, of course, is to protect taxpayers who NOW find themselves picking up the tab for BILLIONS of dollars of emergency hospital care for well off AND low income people who refuse to buy health insurance.

Lastly, the Massachusetts government, unlike MediCaid or MediCare, would NOT be running health care.
