Leading Democrats To Bill Clinton: Pipe Down By Jonathan Alter NEWSWEEK Updated: 1:43 PM ET Jan 19, 2008
Prominent Democrats are upset with the aggressive role that Bill Clinton is playing in the 2008 campaign, a role they believe is inappropriate for a former president and the titular head of the Democratic Party. In recent weeks, Sen. Edward Kennedy and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, both currently neutral in the Democratic contest, have told their old friend heatedly on the phone that he needs to change his tone and stop attacking Sen. Barack Obama, according to two sources familiar with the conversations who asked for anonymity because of their sensitive nature. Clinton, Kennedy and Emanuel all declined to comment.
On balance, aides to both Bill and Hillary still see Bill as a huge net plus in fund-raising, attracting large crowds and providing a megaphone to raise doubts about Obamaeven if some of those doubts are distortions. But there's concern that in hatcheting the Illinois senator and losing his temper with the news media (last week he thrashed a San Francisco TV reporter for asking about a lawsuit filed by Clinton-backing teachers union members to limit the number of Nevada caucuses), Clinton is drawing down his political capital and harming his role as a global statesman. "This is excruciating," says a member of the Clintons' circle, who asked for anonymity. "But the stakes couldn't be higher. It's worth it to tarnish himself a bit now to win the presidency."
During a December taping with PBS's Charlie Rose, a frustrated Clinton called Obama "a roll of the dice," as aides tried to end the interview.

Go BJ, GO!
Hehehehe. Keep up the good fight Bill. Don’t listen to those pesky RATS.
...and he said, “But I need help to get my pipe down.”
Ignore the Senators Kennedy and Emanuel they don’t know WHAT they’re talking about. Just keep up the great work you’re doing to help Hillary win the White House.
PS The more you speak the more women SWOON over you...
No, they were LIES!!!
He’s tasteless trailer trash and all about himself. They encouraged him for years. Why would they think he would shut up now?
Don't worry. No one can tell Bill Clinton what to do. lol! That's a good thing (for us).
Contain yourself, Slick!!
The ‘Toon says “Put some ice on that”
Good luck with that. It would have suited me if he had shut up somewhere around 1960.
Ain't gonna' happen.
BTW, he looks like hell.
I gotta tell ya, the popcorn manufacturers will keep the nation out of a recession!
They ought to cut off his coke and pizza supply if ya want to really hear him make some noise
Wow, for the first time since 1991, I kind of miss the old guy.
That pathetic man is biologically incapable of ever shutting up.
Don’t listen to those guys!!!
Hey, I know! You need a white leisure suit, a pink silk shirt open at the collar, some gold chains and your Sax!
Get those ladies pumped!!!
No one is going to top your response!!!!! ROFL
“”But the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s worth it to tarnish himself a bit now to win the presidency.””
That is exactly what this is about. A third term of the co-presidency.
That our political system has reached the point where a single family can gain such control over their party and command such media support to pull this off as an end-run around constitutional term limits is frightening as hell. While the dynastic claim can be made about Bush as well, it is a very different case as Gov. Bush wasn’t even on the radar until 1999 and his father certainly did not run the GOP. The Clintons have not released control of the DNC in 8 years!
