Headaches linked to mobile phones

Last Updated: 1:02am GMT 21/01/2008

Radiation from mobile phones damages sleep and causes headaches, according to a study by telephone makers.

People using a handset before going to bed take longer to reach deeper stages of sleep and spend less time in them, researchers found.

This gives their bodies less time to repair wear and tear during the day, and gives them headaches.

advertisementThe findings are particularly alarming for children and teenagers, most of whom, surveys suggest, use their phones late at night.

The young need plenty of sleep and failure to get enough can lead to depression and poor academic achievement.

The scientists concluded: "The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep, believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear, are adversely affected.

"Moreover, participants that otherwise have no self-reported symptoms related to mobile phone use appear to have more headaches during actual radio frequency exposure."

The research, funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, which represents the main handset companies, has caused serious concern among sleep experts.

The study, involving 35 men and 36 women aged between 18 and 45, was carried out by scientists from Uppsala University in Sweden and Karolinska Institute and Wayne State University in Michigan, USA.

Yeah, the fewer phonecalls I get from people who call me (mainly my folks), the fewer headaches I come down with. I never understood why until now.

God forgive me, but this is the best news I’ve heard in a long time. I am SO SICK of these cellular phone yakkers, whether it’s because they drive so slow tying up traffic, or yell during their conversations while shopping, dining in a restaurant or just walking down the street. And I love how they talk defiantly in doctor’s waiting rooms, while staring right at signs that state “Turn off Cellular Phones”.

The phone itself is not the problem, of course, it’s the rude behavior of the users. Who needs to do all this talking?

I charge my phone at night right beside my bed I suppose I am setting myself up for sour stomach, boils, shin splints, hemorrhoids, acne, baldness, along with the headaches. Those danged cell phone are he root of all evil! I overheard a cell phone conversation at a restaurant this evening and it ruined my dining experience! Ban ‘em!

I’m in the demographic group studied.... I would certainly skew their results. I used my cellphone a grand total of 14 minutes in the month of December. With the holidays I guess my usage was up.

I love my cell phone and use it all the time. I have fewer headaches than I have ever had in my life. I think my cell phone is a headache cure.

It’s definitely true. I know because my ex-wives are linked to mobile phones which links them to my mobile phone and I get the headaches. Case closed.

I rember my shock a few years ago when people started wearing little phones on their ears. I remember I saw this tall, big, bald (but 30-something) guy walking around and talking loudly into his ear phone. This phone gave off a blueish glow. I swear he looked like some science fiction android character. Who is so important that he has to have a phone practically implanted in his head? And why do people shout into their phones? Are they shouting to call attention to themselves? — “Hey, look at me, I am so important that I have to carry a phone with me!”
